Great series Ben ! Contributing to the algorithm, people need to see this series! My main issue with cartridge razors was the tugging and clogging, that's why I made the switch to DE. I used to like shaving every 7-14 days and it always clogged my Mach3. With long thick stubble, carts always tugged for me as well. When I bought a DE razor it would go through multiple weeks growth with no problem, and zero clogging.
Interesting and informative series Ben. This one really brought back memories for me, as I graduated HS in 1970 and had just begun shaving. I distinctly remember the launch of the Trac II and you are correct - it was hyped up as the best thing since sliced bread. Of course I had to try them out and switched from a Super Speed to the Trac II and used them for many years. When the next new cartridge system came out, always Gillette, I would switch to those until they just got too expensive for me. I was an early adopter of the Harry's razors to save money when you could only buy them online. One night watching Shark Tank, I saw the Supply razor being pitched, and that got me to researching this wet shaving thing and down the rabbit hole I went. 🙃
I tried the 7 O'Clock version of this after I had gotten used to safety razors (since you can't carry the blades on an airplane) and I found it was a perfect compromise because you still have control over the pressure and angle. Also love Atra when I'm in even more of a hurry because you still have control over pressure. Anything more than 2 blades clogs too easily for me (and Mach 3 takes away too much control), I grew up using Sensor but they got too expensive, so I went from that to disposables and electrics, and finally safety razors. Also I had no idea you weren't supposed to put shaving cream on over dripping wet skin. I use Barbasol instead of Foamy but presumably the principle would be the same.
The 7 O’clock razor is my air travel razor. I use that a lot in situations where a safety razor would be ill advised. I like hot it shaves and you can still get affordable blades for it.
Those old ads made me laugh😅😅😅 Disappearing foam when too wet, I find the same issue occurs with some shave brush-less gels in a tube (&can). I totally agree about technique been the most important thing in shaving, when switched from carts DE shaving 10 years ago my technique was basically shit for both razors and I used to get lots of razor burn, however, now with many years of improvement on technique I get good burn-free shaves from both DE and carts. From my understanding lubes strips initial purpose was allow shaves to shave without soap?🤟🤠🤟
Yeah I love the old ads. They don’t make commercials like the used to. Yes the lubricating strip was originally designed to be used without shave foam, though in practice it doesn’t work very well.
Thanks for shining the light on these razors. It is super interesting to see how these razors have developed and somehow has peaked my interest in this era of razors. I will NEVER return to cartridge razors however, but the track II seems interesting enough.
I think there are cartridge razors I wouldn’t MIND using, especially in situations where I necessarily can’t use a safety razor, like air travel. But I certainly wouldn’t want to permanently go back to it.
This is a great video about the trac ii. I've just brought one a y2. Here in the UK, it's hard to get the Razor and original blades, so I got Gillette G2 vintage blades, so I'm looking forward to making an upcoming video 👍 Have a great weekend 🎉
I enjoy my Trac II but I actually prefer the Good News. For some reason I always get better shaves with it . This morning’s shave was a Good News with Gillette Foamy.
I recently bought a Leaf razor for head shaving, and I'm having a hard time getting used to the pivoting head. I prefer the Atra or Sensor. I never had a Trac II, but I'm very confident that I'd like it though since the blades are so similar to the Atra.
@@bigw1552 build quality and the fact that certain cartridges from other companies won’t fit on the razor, but on the original Trac II they will, which means there’s head design differences.
