The last of my silver screen British rarities. At the time this big screen stage adaptation suffered a backlash from critics who felt it was too stagey a production, but in my opinion it’s none the less enjoyable for it today.
Two respectable middle class parents, Mr and Mrs Robinson (Gordon Harker and Betty Balfour) whose children are still living with them in a suburban house and who usually take their annual holiday in Bognor Regis are pressured into taking a cruise, leaving their children at home. As the teenagers enjoy the freedom Mr and Mrs Robinson have second thoughts about their holiday and decide to return home early.
Based on an original play by Denis and Mabel Constanduros, featuring some early location shots of Bognor it plays out today like a social commentary on how the “once” middle class behaved.
Trivia: For those whom are train enthusiasts there is a brief shot of a Southern Railway 3 SUB EMU filmed somewhere on the South Western Division while the train interior scene is a studio set.
