They did play it at the beginning. They just used a loop pedal to record it and play it back while they built on top of it. If you've never seen one in action, look up one of KT Tunstall's performances of Black Horse and the Cherry Tree. Though they have their limitations, they can be used to great effect in music.

They are electric cellos as in you play it and no sound comes out unless it’s plugged to a speaker I think

this doesnt look live. He stops plucking for a moment at 0:10 and the plucking sound keeps going. I dont know how that is possible. Is it not live, or did they only add in the plucking later, if so, why did he bother trying to pretend to pluck. Im so confused.
