Thank you for these videos! I've a 2CV waiting for restauration but I'm hesitant to start tinkering with the engine. So I've picked up 2 spare engine blocks yesterday to practise on. Your videos will be a great source of information!

A day without learning something new is a day wasted. What did I learn today? That I have a soft spot for 2CVs. Never owned one. These days, though, I live deep in the wilds and a Deux Chevaux would handle my quarter mile dirt track rather better than my old Focus... Many thanks, and on to part 6...

Many years ago when I was lad there was a TV series about a company building a wooden car for Africa. As part of a long test from Nordkap to the Equator they were on a high pass in the Algerian desert clearly marked as suitable for 4 wheel drive vehicles only. They were 2 wheel drive but made it and as they were rightly congratulating themselves a standard 2cv crawled past them in the other direction. Truly a go anywhere car!

@@oldnutsgarage I remember that wooden car project. Never came to anything, which was disheartening. (My days as a lad are also a long time past)...

THANKS MARK I learn so much watching your videos I didnt know about assembly lube.I once had a problem with an O ring like you it was a little bit small,I carefully stretched it and it fitted.Should I have not done this? Steve.
@oldnutsgarage
@oldnutsgarage 4 года назад
Thanks Steven. I do not think that stretching one slightly would be an issue. The problem this time was that the O ring appeared to be too weedy in construction and wanted to return to the shape it had been when packed in the gasket set. Thanks again for watching!

@@oldnutsgarage ..really enjoy it. I just got a Dyane with a very oily and low compression engine so your videos will be a huge help for the inevitable rebuild. Thanks again.

Distinguished gentleman. Nice to greet you. Excuse my writing. I don't speak English perfectly. I've seen this entire series of videos, which are wonderful. A question. Are you sure you set the camshaft correctly? This shaft has a torsional damper and after having tightened this damper, the marks are made to coincide with the gear of the crankshaft. I didn't see that he did that in the pictures. Greetings from Viña del Mar. Chile
@oldnutsgarage
@oldnutsgarage 3 года назад
Hello Walter it is wonderful to speak to someone from Chile and thank you for watching my videos! The camshaft is fitted and lined up as Citroen states in their Factory Workshop Manual 8161. Thanks again and keep safe !

@@oldnutsgarage Hi! How are you. Your videos are magnetic, I kept looking at every detail you do. You have repaired a classic car. I have also seen where to repair the suspension of the citroen, they are pluperfects. Thank you very much for your videos and the patience you have had to record and edit them. Many hugs

32:55, I would not use grease, as grease will not melt at the normal temperature of the oil (engine warmed-up and running). It could clog oil passages. Vaseline would be the preferred product.
@oldnutsgarage
@oldnutsgarage 4 года назад
I am not sure that a tiny amount of grease underneath a seal will cause any problems, but if it worries you then use vaseline by all means. Thanks for watching.

The only thing I didn't understand is : how do you know if the hole on the crankcase is lined up with the one on the crankshaft, you can't see them being underneath, you can only see the 2 at the top, I m confused!!
@oldnutsgarage
@oldnutsgarage 3 года назад
You are correct you cannot see it happen, but you can feel it, although it is not always obvious, hence my caution when putting it together. Taking it in and out a few times helps develop the feel. You can also check visually as the bearing edge will not look parallel to the case. Thanks for watching!

Sir, I am from Pakistan and Citroen2cv lover N owner of 1968 425cc.i modified my engine with 602cc pistons cylinders by machining both as per its strok but I feel some hitting or knocking on valve so I placed shims inside of heads. My 2cv engine is more power than 425ccnow.

Hello Ejaz, it is wonderful to hear from a Citroen lover from Pakistan, a country I have always wanted to visit. It sounds like you have done a lot of complicated work on your engine especially as getting spare parts must be very difficult. Thank you watching my videos!

Possibly a bit of debris left in the O ring slots?
@oldnutsgarage
@oldnutsgarage 4 года назад
Good point. I think the problem with the pump cover was that the O ring was pretty thin and wanted to return to the shape it had been in when packed into the gasket set. I think a better quality one might not have been so reluctant. The slot was definitely clean on that one. The smaller one for the oil filter housing which was changed on camera may have had some debris and I did wash the groove out later, but that O ring was not as much of a problem as the first. Either way, making sure that the slots are clean is a very good idea. Thanks for watching!
@delukxy
@delukxy 4 года назад
As filmed I did think that the slots looked a bit dirty, possible rubber from the old seal and you put in the new seal on top of that. Yes the seals did look rather thin but they do tend to fatten up when they get into contact with solvents. I like your meticulous and calm approach so not a reprimand! I think that the soaking of paper gaskets is more applicable to NOS stuff you pick up at autojumbles. The paper ones do shrink but a soak in the bath overnight usually brings them back to original size OK. Cork gaskets, rocker cover gaskets for example, also shrink. Put those in the bath too.
@oldnutsgarage
@oldnutsgarage 4 года назад
The bit about paper gaskets was just a passing thought while I was tinkering away as I have not done that for a long time . Petrol tap corks though are a different matter....Thanks once again for your useful comments and tips !
