4:04 A390258-3(RCA) has never been the equivalent of 2N3055, and now 2N3773 (GES) and this in the archaic "hometaxial base" technique with high resistance to secondary breakdown ... but with a low cut-off frequency ft and a fairly small current gain factor...currently, 2N3055 transistors are produced exclusively by the eptaxi-planar technique...CONSPIRACY THEORY CREATION!!!

No, not necessarily. I used to buy original ST parts directly from ST (yes, I did buy in large quantity). Mostly 2N3055s, MJ2955s, 2N6059s and LM323K regulators. For quite awhile, ST did use the that same wide, blue insulator. But - regarding the Toshiba 2N3055s, there was a reseller on the east coast that was pushing these out by the 10's of thousands. They worked but had an extremely low gain of about 4 or 5 which made them useless.
