This was a vacant house fire (no kidding). 1st due engine had a story and a half with the 2nd floor fully involved on arrival. Not a bit of smoke on the 1st floor since everything was vented. Quick knock down by the time 2nd due engine arrived. No injuries but a little trouble again with MSA PASS device malfunctions. Video filmed with 2 Fire Cam 1080's from www.firevideo.net

You can't say that unless you know how that department operates. 50% of their call volume is working fires...so the longer they are tied up on a abandoned house that is burning and dumping water from the outside the better the possibility is for a actual working fire with actual people trapped comes in. The more aggressive they are for the abandoned houses the less time they spend there.
@bobg1925
@bobg1925 11 лет назад
They don't know if a house is occupied or not. Even if they knew nobody was in the house, the would sill put it out because fires have been known to "jump over" and ignite fires at other houses: the sooner they put one out, the sooner they can prevent fires jumping.

Seemed to me that he risked a little to save a little. He knocked down most of the fire before he even went up the stairs....that's pretty non-aggressive and smart for this situation.

I agree Joe Its vacant and already at a good stage and vented let the thing burn or someone else will burn it again

Have the same problem with the PASS devices in my dept. we've been replacing them as they start doing that. Rep said that it's the mechanical device that detects movement. The replacements are electronic so it eliminates the false alarms..good work.

Why is it that ya always have the pass going off all the times.....My Captain would kill me if that was me !
@andrewvetter1073
@andrewvetter1073 10 лет назад
as a junior firefighter I understand what you are saying...I was drilling and every 30 seconds they would go off, the motion detectors are not sensitive enough but it is better than the alternative

The alarms your hearing are from the pass device on the scott pack. (Air tank). They activate if a firefighter is still for to long. So if someone goes down on a fire scene the audable alarm makes it a little easier to locate them to get them out. What your hearing here is just a failure to reset it from the o2 gauge (dummy). Im sure after the incident he was strongly advised by one of his officers (made a fool of) to make sure they dont let it happen again. We bust on our new guys all the time.

Excellent Job Brother! Rob, that stairwell looked very similar to the one I had out here a couple years ago. Awesome!

it has to be so sketchy working in those beat down, vacant houses. Plenty of unknown. Well handled.

every dept has different procedures and protocols depending on avail water supply in the area, size of the tanks on their trucks, manpower, etc. This was a known vacant building with little/no life hazard. it's best to take your time and get the job done safely. some depts would have done an exterior attack only, but an aggressive interior attack is the best way to control any fire quickly.

@Maskmanco15 there was not alot of fire involvement, the house was still structurally stable, they risked little to save little, thats what firefighting is about, go put the fire out and now you dont have to sit there for 2 hours and protect exposures!

If those Pass Alarms aren't sensing the fire fighters moving when the OBVIOUSLY are I'd have the manufacture of the packs come back & recalibrate them they SHOULDN'T be going off THAT much every 2-3 minutes they are going off. I was in the fire service yes the ARE needed & A MUST too but something is WRONG with those.

iunno man. That's a family's home. Losing it is HUGE. I'm not devaluing the life of the firefighter, I just think that the risks firefighters take is why people admire them so much.

its a wood frame (type V) the brick on the A side is just a facade. most residential homes with brick exterior walls are typically facades and you can bet that they're a wood frame.
@neligshaty

they are PASS devices, there suppose to only go off when a firefighter has not moved in a fire for 30 second, so other firefighters can locate the firefighter who's PASS device is going off.

Everything looked great to me, good job! My only question is why didn't 2nd lay a line into you? I don't know how much tank water your engines carry, I'm just curious from a tactical perspective.

Another junk Msa pass device. We had to get new ones for all of our packs. Msa told us its a flaw in the pass but it was our porblem to fix them. The flaw is in the pass there is a ball hat rides in a plastic track and the track wears out easy. The newer pass's dont have this prob. Still we will never own msa again being we had to replace everyone and msa didnt help out one bit. Good knock and keep doing work. Great vid

he is waiting for the line to get charged. The engineer outside has to send water to the handline. If you look close you can see pressurized air escape the line at first, then the water comes.

I'm not sure what PASS alarm is more annoying. MSA or SCOTT.. I use scott but it kinda seems like the devices on msa packs are more faulty. But I've never used one so I really don't know.

You know this is going to become the newest entertainment place for the entire neighborhood. Lets light er up and wait for the lights and sirens.....Maybe it would be prudent that when a home is in this stage of decay and already on fire to just let it go down to the ground and control it so it is no longer a time waster....

wow . . . the house is "fine" upon entry (obviously neglected because it's vacant) but up ahead there's fire. pretty scary stuff.

Nice video from the cam. Please check your batteries on your MSA and be cognizant of your alarm. I would have dragged you out just to make a point. Have it checked by your techs. They work just fine if you treat them properly and feed them a constant diet of batteries. Where is your back up? Risk nothing to save nothing folks. Make sure you have a long career.

Another "by the book firefighter." Too many of you guys these days. It's obvious you have very little fire experience, and in your mind, you're a badass firefighter. Great video East St. Louis, the way it should be done, put it out and go home. Keep em' coming.

im betting its a vacant house look at the walls when he enters. in arsons people will punch holes in the floors and walls to help increase oxygen flow to the fire and accelerate fire spread.

Good fire but not the smartest captain since he's not wearing an airpack, we all know far too well (those of us that have had this experience) that breathing in those carcinogens isn't going to help your health over time.
