i just rewatched this episode last night. but basically when burke went to go get denny's heart, the donor patient went into V-FIB and the heart failed but there was another donor that was also a match for denny but it belonged to another patient. so in order for denny to get the heart, they had to make his condition worse so he would become priority on the UNOS list and he could have the heart.
