Hi. I've been a subscriber of yours for quite a while now and just recently "pulled the trigger" and made this very bench and it's outside my front door so I can sit and watch the kids play and enjoy some fresh air. Your videos are absolutely awesome and I encourage you to continue to make great content. I also just finished one of your chairs (with arm rests) out of cedar and giving it to my wife for her birthday. Hands down, 5 star rating.

Hey Jay, had been wanting to make a bench for myself from your plans since I first saw them. Well, I finally did. Actually ended up making two. Your directions were spot on! Only things I might have added for those of us that aren't carpenters: 1) to cut the angled pieces without changing the blade orientation, just flip the board over; 2) don't mark the boards first - measure, mark and cut as you go; and finally, 3) do any sanding of edges/surfaces before you put it together. I love how they came out...plan to build more. Thanks!!!!

Thank you for great design and plans and description, and video. I am not very handy, but I just completed entire bench using scrap cuts left over from renovations. I used thinner boards for the back just because they were lying around I did not even had to cut them. My bench looks scruffy, but it is super comfortable, strong, and just the right size for my yard. It was my biggest furniture project so far, and I feel like I accomplished something. Thank you, I would not be able to make that without your help.

Sold my first bench just now and already have some more people interested. I plan on doing them in SPF, pressure treated (green and sienna) and cedar. Thanks Jay. P.S. I've only made 4 so far but I've discovered a couple of things that I consider slight improvements. I find 5 seat slats much more comfortable so I extend the horizontal pieces of the leg assemblies by 3 3/4. Also, I like the seat slats to overhang a little more so I shortened the cross member by 2 inches to 38". And I discovered you don't need a wall to get matching angles for the back supports. Build one, drive one screw into the other and then "spoon" them together. That should give you the correct angle. If anyone can't figure out what I mean, I can take a picture or video.
@theopiner402
@theopiner402 8 лет назад
That "spooning" idea is quite clever! I will use that as I am building these benches for a local craft show, thanks!
@oobaka1967
@oobaka1967 8 лет назад
If you haven't yet, try adding a 5th seat slat. I've built around 6 so far and added a 5th on 5 of them. Everyone agrees that it makes the bench more comfortable. It will require you to adjust a few cut lengths and some more 2x4 though.

I just built a version of this bench combined with the "horse" bench ( used the arm rest and contoured seat ) and it turned out great! Started with some old upcycled 2x4's I ran through my drum sander and table saw. They ended up a little smaller but after the router rounded the corners they look great. Thanks for the info!!!

Fantastic! I had built a similar bench and there was just something I didn't quite like about it. This helped me refine my plans. Something you might consider (and it might not work) for that first seat slat, you could try a right angle adapter. I picked one up as another way to navigate in tight spaces.

If you keep this on a porch or a covered patio than you could easily get 10 years out of it with no finish. The thing you have to worry about is water being absorbed from the feet. If you can get around that than wood will last longer than you think being unfinished. The outdoor water treatment I prefer is Thompsons Wood Sealer. Unfortunately the smallest amount I have seen it in is a gallon which is way more than you need here. Maybe someone else can chime in on this one.

If you are going to use pressure treated lumber for this project, Blue Coated Kreg screws will corrode and fall apart eventually. You may want to look into stainless steel or heavy-coated Torx screws. Since 2004, pressure treated lumber uses a new copper-based formula. Steel screws fall apart faster.

I just made this project using a mitre saw and Kreg pocket hole jig I received for Father's Day. I was amazed at how easy it was for even a novice like me to complete. My wife was impressed and I have gotten all kinds of compliments. I have subscribed and have already been all over your website looking at different projects to try. Thank you Jay for posting this, I came across it accidentally. My wife was wanting a nice wooden bench and I was searching for one to buy and your video came up in the results. I watched it and you make it very easy to understand so I started researching costs for saws and jigs and the rest is history.

Just the wood alone now cost me about $34, how much would you sell for with those prices? each 2x4x8 cost about $4.15 here in Los Angeles CA. Do you sand the wood? or just cut, and assemble?
@hoixthegreat8359
@hoixthegreat8359 4 года назад
@@blames27 7 years ago bud, inflation is a thing. Plus, wood prices vary a bit between states, especially between one of the most expensive cities and the poorest state in the US. Even THEN, he mentions it costs about $30 in materials - $34 + a couple bucks for screws isn't that much more. So he's not making that much money anyway.

Hi, Jay I wanted to tell you that your a true craftsman love your plans and videos was wondering if you have time to make a trash bin the one that has a single door and opens up with trash can at a 45 degree angle with hinges at the bottom was hoping to learn using pine here is link to what one looks like > it wont let me post link if on you tube you search trash bin pine comes up like 3rd one down figured it don't hurt to ask there are others people build on here but being really honest I am new to wood working and no one explains the process like you and your plans are the best ! and also most people are using equipment I don't have a $10,000 work shop just basic miter-chop saw band saw table top sander and table saw- kreg jig some other power tools. anyhow thanks for all you videos and advice you really help me learn woodworking ! have a blessed day and please keep making videos :)

Great tutorial. I'm looking to build this bench, and have a few questions... what wood was used? Did you stain or treat it for outdoor conditions?

Hey jay. Not sure the best way to contact you so I thought I would try on this specific video. Would you be able to tell me what you use to charge for this bench when you were building and selling these. I just need a rough comparison because I'm having a hard time figuring out costs of some of my builds. I feel like I'm under cutting myself.

You explain everything except which ones are cut at 15 degrees and 90 degrees?

If I were to extend the legs a bit so I can bury it into the dirt, is that doable, or is there some problem that would arise from that? I’m using this video for my Eagle Scout project and am attempting to put benches where erosion is likely. For this reason, I may need the benches to be more grounded. Thanks and this video was very helpful.

Aside from having to use treated wood...at least for the legs...I don't see any problems. I've built a few of these and I've found that I prefer using 5 slats for the seat instead of 4. Just feels more comfortable. Jay describes himself as short. I'm about 6 inches taller so that might be why 5 slats feel more comfortable for me. Adding a slat requires buying / using one more 2x4. I even made one using only dowels and glue to attach the slats. Have fun with your scouts.

Ha! I'm back to how it was for years. I got a bug about trying to grow it out last fall. Its just too darn hot for long hair here. Thats great news! Send me some pics if you decide to build both projects!!

Hi Jay. Quick question: How far do you think the bench's length can be extended before having to add a third pair of legs? I'm looking at making this bench but extending the bench's length to 70 inchese.

Nice job. Those 2x's don't look treated. What do you use to protect them?

Just wanted to say thanks for the bench ideas. I used your plans, but changed them a little to use an old pickup tailgate for the back of my bench. I built it for my son for Christmas, and he loved it. Thanks again.

Jay, Thank you very much for such a great video and plan! Going to do it this weekend. What do you think about applying some finish? I am thinking about just 1 layer of Watco Natural Danish Oil Wood Finish. Is it worth it or not really? Thank you!

+Jay Bates Do you put any type of sealer on the bench to increase its lifespan? Just curious if it is necessary. Thanks so much for the vids, I have learned alot and have been slowly but surely getting more and more into woodworking because of your videos. Thanks again!

Thanks for the video and idea. Just seeing if you've ever made the bench with an extra 2x4 on seat and back to make the bench a little deeper and taller? Thanks again.
