I'm building my own 2x72 from scratch... I've been having a hard time specially with the alignment, and your videos are helping a lot, honestly, such is the help that I had to basically go back to the drawing board...While I'm not trying to copy your design, I'm using all the info you are providing to understand the process of this build to make my own.. Thanks for all that..

Use a heavy coil spring on the back side and your adjustment screw on front side. The spring will want to push the to the ( front )right the adjustment screw can be used to balance the tracking azimuth fore and aft. This way there is no play or backlash in the azimuth adjustment fore and aft angle. The spring can be captured a couple of ways, you can use a screw threaded thru a welded tab. The screw will thread into the welded tab then a lock nut and washer then the spring around the threads as you turn the screw with the spring on. It it will put a greater spring load on the azimuth which you can counter with the adjustment screw on the other side. Or just use a welded tab with a recess for the spring and a recess on the idler pivot. Lots of way to do it but the spring will remove backlash from the adjustment.

Here's to hoping. I think it makes sense to have on any grinder just in case the belts start to walk or stretch. I have used this now so many times in the short period I have had it. I'm sold on it.

Building my second 2 x 72 now. Funny how much I use the old one to build the new one ! First one uses an old single phase "Water Pump" motor and this one will run a 3 phase with a VFD so I can reverse it and slow it down. Just as you stated first time builders need to not sweat the small deviations as they are forgiving. That being said compensating has worn out my tracking wheel bevel so this one will be a combination of designs that I "Borrowed" from 100 video's ! Thanks for your post Brian, More I can borrow. LOL

Nailed it!!! That is absolutely perfect, forward and reverse with out touching anything is the way they should all be. Those RC car turnbuckle control arms are probably more that enough range of motion from the looks of it. Awesome work.

Nice work. I did a similar modification to my belt grinder a while back. It really adds an extra degree of versatility to the machine, especially if you've got an odd tool arm that's a little tweaked, or that may not run in reverse as well as forward. My only suggestion is that you could eliminate one of the 3 top screws. You really only need a pivot and one locking screw. On mine, I leave the pivot slightly snug, and use a knob for the lock. That way I can adjust it on the fly, tool free. I made a vid on my channel a couple of months ago if you care to watch it. It's called "tracking mod details for Chris".

I have been working on the same problem with my DIY grinder. The only thing I would do is press a bearing into the center hole. Then you can let it move freely while maintaining rigidity, then you would only need one slotted hole and one bolt to lock it in place. I love your idea and I am going to build one for my grinder. I use mine to do hollow grinds by putting the blade between the contact wheel and surface plate.

Nice work Brian! Couple thoughts. On the fine adjustment , consider 1/4-28 thread for better control. Also, to get more travel out of it you could use a ball and socket pivot joint on the end of the bolt or rotate the non threaded hole piece and use a small stamped steel clevis
@HouseMadeUS
@HouseMadeUS 4 года назад
Good call! I was trying to think of the name of that type of socket so I could look it up on McMaster. A ball and socket pivot joint. Yes. That would keep it from binding up. Thanks Michael.

Nicely done, I would suggest to use a rod end instead of the small welded tab. This will solve problem with the 2 bolts. You may get free movement in all axis with this will help with the adjustment bolt giving more and free adjustability.
@rafaelvillalobosjr4884
@rafaelvillalobosjr4884 4 года назад
Looks amazing! Especially like the adjustment bolt idea to eliminate the second plate in the draft. Only things I would add are fine threads make for finer adjustments AND if you elongate the hole between the nylon nuts just a little in the same axis as the bolt, it will give you more adjustment before it binds. Granted, I don't anyone should need more than 15 degrees :P
@HouseMadeUS
@HouseMadeUS 4 года назад
Good call! Haha! Yeah I think 3 degrees is all that is needed here. But I like the idea of elongating that hole. Thanks for the concepts and ideas. Also I have a package waiting in my shop from you!! WOOOOOOOTTT!

@lonewolfdesignsbylarry
@lonewolfdesignsbylarry 3 года назад
May have been stated. The left/right degrees could be increased by using a heim joint. The joint will keep the thread shaft straight while allowing the the motion to happen and doubles as a roller type baring for the shaft to ride in and be tightened down. The add the locking nut to the outside for ease of the end user to lock that sweet spot down.

Gday from down under and from one fabricator to another well done and awesome work. I'm wondering if you've considered instead of the mechanism on the left you use to rotate to instead incorporate a handle, it would minimize the amount of time and effort and would make the plasma cut part of the rotating part and handle one piece. If the two smaller bolts were left slightly nibbed up you would still get some pretty precise movements

@@HouseMadeUS hey , I took a look at your work and it is a fine bit of engineering, it occurred to me that if you just drill a hole at the left end of the topside pivot ,and weld a rod on to a nut ( or use a partially threaded version of a rod end from grainger). You could save some work machining get rid of some play and it would operate smoother (I think)

Hi Brian, nice work. I have a few thoughts toward simplifying construction. The vertical piece can be welded on without the two support pieces. Also the rotating top piece only needs one locking bolt. The travel is so small you could get by with just a larger hole rather than a slot. You could use the same size Allen bolt for pivot, locking and also the adjusting bolt using the one Allen key that you would already have on your hand. Just a thought for those that are using basic tools.

How do you figure out when to use one tracking adjustment or the other, do they have the same effect but different scale?
@HouseMadeUS
@HouseMadeUS 4 года назад
This is a great question. I watch the location of the belt on the drive and tracking wheel. I want the belt to be as centered as possible. Then I start to look at wobble. Basically it’s a balancing act. That said if you level the tracking wheel my first adjustment is the fine tuner. I want that one to be as close as possible because if I can get that I can lock it down and just use the big knob. Hope that makes sense. 👊🏻
