Move execution is maybe the single greatest barrier of entry fighting games have. What I’ve noticed over the years, from Street Fighter 2 forward, is the more complicated they appear to have gotten the more they lose people. It’s probably not a coincidence that the most successful fighting game series of the last 24 years is the one that eliminated move inputs all together. And Smash Bros. has done that while being on low selling systems; when Switch finally landed Nintendo back on top it pushed Smash Bros. from just beating the competition to being one of the best selling games of all time. Likewise, Capcom’s most successful bunch of fighting games in the arcade (after Street Fighter 2) was their Marvel stuff where Hyper moves could be done by simply pressing two buttons. Even on the 3D side of things, when arcades were big, the three button Virtua Fighter was one of the biggest things around...at least up to VF3. The second biggest barrier of entry is cost. Smash Bros. shows a fighting game can still pull in big numbers at retail. But I think if fighting games were free-to-play, and stuff was priced more smartly, fighting games could rack in what they did in the early ‘90s.
@DIOBrando-ij2bp
@DIOBrando-ij2bp 6 месяцев назад
@@purplebunz It’s a free game, so they’ll definitely get a lot of people trying it on release. And if it plays good, they’ll probably keep a good deal of them. They don’t even really need a switch anyways. That free-to-play MultiVersus game had over 20 million users in less than a month of the beta going. Street Fighter 5 sold 7.40 across every version and seven years. It took Tekken 7 five years to move 10 million units. 2XKO will likely outperform Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and Street Fighter fairly quickly.

someday people will stop making the mistake of thinking that simple controls will cause some huge boost in fighting game playerbases. all simple controls do is lower the skill floor for everyone. beginners will still get absolutely shit on by people with any experience in fighting games. most of these beginners will cry like scrubs and drop the game. a very slim proportion will stick around and learn. besides, this is a tag fighter. a niche within a niche. this ain't gonna be the massive release you think it is.

@@Seama327im gonna be honest, the casual gamer audience didnt even know granblue existed so the simple inputs dont matter in the first place. even a lot of the casual fighting game players (the type of people that just buy mortal kombat because its gorey and has fun DLC) dont have any idea about granblues existence. but if youre a LoL or Val player and those guys released a fighting game with characters you already like, and then you try it and the controls feel easy to use which gives you more room to focus on the gameplay itself, you’ll probably play it more. this focus on making a genre’s controls easy to use for new players is a large part of LoL’s and Val’s success

I've seen this take flying around but imo it is not the easy controls themselves. There have been plenty of games that have gone down this route already, granblue (somewhat) with rising, smash bros (not rly a fighting game as far as the majority of the fgc is concerned but alot of the mainstream gamers think it is so I'll chuck it in) fantasy fighter or whatever that game was called and etc... I do agree with 2xko bringing in alot of the mainstream audience however. But is not because of anything else but just because it is from riot. Is already been proven with valorant that riot games can seemingly just bring players to a completely new genre and people are OK with it. Valo personal hatred aside did in fact inspire a revival of the Cs style slower paced tactical team shooter. I would not be surprised if 2xko reaches similar levels of success as well. But it wouldn't be because of easy controls. Tekken is still the most popular franchise amongst the more casual fan base in recent times with street fighter being a very close 2ND. Neither games are what you would call very casual friendly with inputs and what not. But that's not really the point, people just want to look for an excuse to not play the game and the control scheme is the most obvious thing to poke at.

Execution will always be a crucial part in fighting games. My main concern is the game the game getting figured out too quickly. You can already feel this with S1 SF6 which only took a week or so. Even games like DBFZ which took a month. And seeing 2XKO where people we are speculating that are already pulling off the "crazy combos" is going to get old real fast. Even Melee's mechanical depth comes from the movement which also ties into the combos. I think taking those away speed up the process where things will get figured out making a more uninteresting game. I.e. early street fighter V, how did they fix that? By adding more mechanics to the game. Granblue Fantasy started this way with 1 button inputs and that died quickly until the rerelease which overhauled the system. Just look at DNF Duel for a point of reference.

i think melee is actually a great example of balance in inputs, and smash is a great example of an easy entry barrier overall. everything about smash itself is super simple and easy to get into, all of your attacks are one button presses, sometimes while pressing a horizontal or vertical direction. movement is just running and jumping. the barrier of entry is fantastic, because its supposed to be a party game with easy to use mechanics. but there is a lot of unintended movement tech (in melee especially) that is required to have specific inputs. you dont need these if you’re just playing for fun with some friends, but if you want to play competitively you will start learning the inputs. the inputs don’t give you new moves or better ones, and if you’re playing casually as a beginner with some friends chances are you’re not gonna need the specific input tech. its just if you ever decide to compete and play seriously

The single button inputs definitely reminds of the fighting game my friends play called DNF Duel. I have tried multiple times to get them into Guilty Gear but they just don't like having to learn the inputs to pull of special moves in the slightest, especially when they are playing against someone that has already put the time in to learn them. But when all that needs to be done is press a button, they are able to quickly feel like they are making progress in learning the systems that the game presents which allows them to have more fun, earlier on in the process. I have a feeling that this game will cause similar feelings to those new to the genre, and will act like a great introduction to what fighting games have to offer.

I'm not sure project L is going to go THAT well in the future. Alot of It's ideas are promising, like being free to play and having borderline infinite riot money for development but I honestly doubt they can really do anything to make the most difficult part of learning a fighting game, getting washed and learning from It, any easier without inclusion of some kind of two player vs two player so mode so that when everything goes down the drain you could atleast blame your teammate to save your ego, and that wouldn't be that good as It would quickly turn the playerbase into a toxic cesspool

When Marvel vs Capcom 3 was announced, and they were first talking about the new “Special button,” for a moment I thought they were trying what this game is doing. Those Smash controls, what Capcom is just kind of getting around to with Modern Controls in SF6, (although they tried a terrible version of it with Capcom vs SNK 2 EO and it’s Easy Operation system) I was thinking they were doing that with MvC3 back in 2011. Makes sense to do that in a Marvel game, Marvel did always have simpler controls than their Street Fighter games, and it is a fan service game meant to reach an audience that might never play fighting games or maybe haven’t played a Capcom fighting game since Street Fighter 2. BlazBlue was pretty new around then too, and they had that Drive Attack button, so I thought maybe Capcom was kind of jumping off that. But despite its name, it just basically ended up being the Guilty Gear XX Dust button with a tag option once you were in the air. Seemed like a big missed opportunity. Those controls combined with being free-to-play I think will money printing machine. Post League of Legends showing how big the free-to-play model can make something, like sometime in 2010, fighting games should’ve been going free-to-play. I can kind of get not jumping on it immediately, but once you’re getting to Street Fighter 5, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite (which sounds like the name of a F2P MvC) and Tekken 7 it’s just weird they aren’t F2P; especially since their monetization model is build around trying to sell people costumes. I mean you’re probably going to make more money selling cheaper costumes to a percentage of 20 or 30 million people than trying to sell overpriced costumes to somewhere around 2 or 3 million the first year. My guess is 2XKO is a big hit, and Capcom, NAMCO, and SNK are left scrabbling to fight for a F2P fighting game market that could’ve theirs at any point in the last 12 years.

"Smack around every modern fighting game and change the genre forever" i cant really take this statement serious, considering that there doesnt exist a single tag based fighting game that has even been close to competing with Tekken or Street fighter. Modern controls in street fighter are dying, and people are getting scolded for using them online. Same with tekken. While there’s no avoiding it, I dread the arrival of the F2P era, specifically in the hands of veteran developers. Tekken is doing okay with cosmetics at the moment, but Capcom and NRS have made clearly consumer unfriendly decisions while charging full price for their games. If the landscape for F2P live service games now is any indication, a ton of games will fall off in they can’t captivate a large enough audience. I don’t think current devs are equipped for that.

What the FGC needs is that people stop being scared of playing a game, because gamers now are so braindead they will research for ours before playing a game, sometimes even a free game. But a free to play will just be a mid FG with a thousand expensive skins

This needs extremely good anti-cheat though... Making computer assisted inputs in fighting games is not that hard and previously the biggest threat of using them is that when you get exposed you might get banned and lose 50$+ but that is not true for a F2P.

Honestly I dont think that simplicity necessarily works for everything, not saying its bad but like, me personally I fucking love special inputs like ABA’s rekka in +r is the shit for me (even though Im dogass at it lmao). Not even because its hard to do just because it feels really good to mash out dps and quarter circles, so while I do think that not using motion inputs is something that can be done well I dont think that it should be the standard, I personally think that it really depends on the game and what the developer wants to go for

Sorry gotta have to say a few things here: 1. Namco and capcom are both also having more than enough money so if money is the breaking point why it didnt already happen then? 2. Honestly the fighting game those 2 worked on looks kinda oof. Now i don't see the connection of them making a good game all of a sudden because they got more money. 3. new players got e.g. the special mode in tekken for easier entry and i see people use it accordingly. Did u try TEKKEN 8? because the video footage was TEKKEN 7 for which i'd agree on that point. take it with a grain of salt just wondering, not meant to be offending or anything :D good video tho

You saying that this game is gonna be successful because of Money and Simple contolers? I hope they bring something more tham that, cause that is not enough to be a success, there are a lot of games with a good ammount of financial backing and they flopped. And if simple controllers would be the game changer... I don't think so, if that's the case then DNF Duel and Power Rangers Power of the Grid would've been really successful. The Legacy of LoL can carry the game too, but if the game doesn't do something innovating that carry is gonna go back to the games they came from.

i think a lot of the misconceptions of fighting games are coming to pass. "Fighting game too hard, ugh" is quickly becoming a dead topic. SFV, SF6, DBFZ, Tekken 7, Tekken 8, have been very complex games. Yet every game is bigger then the last. Better systems like training options and netcode are what fighters needed. SF6 and tekken 8 are so crazy complex. yet a lot of people are playing. I think being fun in paramount. Then is the online good? those boxes being checked means streams, youtubers and player sharing. Leading to more engagement. The free thing may affect other fighters only if 2xko(hate this garbage title) checks these same boxes. yet at the same time it may be too complex to hit the top since the 2v2. even with simple controls that is still asking one to learn 2 characters, the system mechanics and how to apply those two things together.

Nah fuck easy controls , nothing feels better in FGC than a triple wavu wavu into electric 🤣🤣 , imo the perfect controls are found in dbfz remove all the pretzel garbage input and stick with an easy quarter circle input , atleast this way I can feel that I did a special move not a command normal

The amount of characters like velkoz, braum, Warwick, katarinas,etc. Would be amazing to see it pulled off! Dlc for this game is gonna be wicked! mmmm, ehhhhh, 50/50 on these takes, this game will absolutely not be the biggest fighting game ever, idk where that comes from, it'll be a sizable game, but about as sizable as valorant, it attracts riot fans but the genre is infinitely nicher than mobas and fps games, so itll attract even less than today's numbers on valorant. fighting games are really not as hard as people make them out to be (anti-airing is not a difficult concept at all lmao), and even then, if theyre attracting the same people who play league and val, then it shouldnt be a problem, people who complain about motions are just complainers and nothing more, dbfz is actually proof, while i agree it is not imperative for a fighting game to have motions at this point with the whole new age/modern audience, it is disingenuous to say that motions restrict players because it doesn't, again, dbfz is proof, sf6 is proof, ggst is also proof, one of the pioneers of the "modern" fgc, again most people complain because they simply dont want to try or get better. also, when you mentioned melty, you showed footage of uni lol. but yea, this game does look fun, it's just not gonna be as big or deep as you think it is

it will never stop being amusing how fgcbros always go "it's not the controls that's the issue, it's everything else about these games that's driving prospective new players away!" and then you actually read the grievances by people who bounced off of this genre have had with it and 9 times out of 10 you'll read something about "the controls are godawful and unintuitive and it made playing the game a chore" like it literally doesn't matter if motion inputs are a complete nonfactor when it comes to the difficulty of a fighter, if people are unwilling to try this genre because they perceive motion inputs as a barrier, then removing said barrier is just a no-brainer

All that shit is thrown out the window if you don’t give a reason for said consumer to buy and love the game. Regardless if inputs are hard or not if the game looks cool and plays cool they’re going to be successful. However, let’s not for a second believe that they aren’t going to water-down this entire game for mass capital gains. MK1 is a perfect example of a studio thinking easier inputs = better for players. I would argue that hard inputs and complicated systems actually get people to stay longer and invest in the games community. It’s so sad that our generation (Gen Z) needs instant gratification just to continue playing. My point is, they are making a fighting game with an already massive IP (league of legends) that’s already half the battle. If they make it look cool and feel fun and they add stipulations within the game that demonstrates to new players how to do EVERYTHING no matter how difficult, people are going to enjoy and stick around. You said it yourself, fighting games are already inherently difficult, making moves one button isn’t going to cause that much difference there is evidence to back that up
@dean988
@dean988 6 месяцев назад
i hope it does well, people are so weird about fighting games NEEDING directional inputs for every move. whats the point of having those inputs that really only serve to make it harder for people to get into the game? theres already enough learning to do when picking up any fighting game like said in the video, why make it even harder? all they have to do is balance around simple inputs, which every other game genre already does. imagine having to do a hadouken input in call of duty to use your killstreak. its not a hard input to do, but theres no point to it besides making things unnecessarily difficult. its just stubborn players that hate the idea of change and want to feel better about being bad at the game but just good enough to know their inputs

Idk man, simple inputs don't mean jack shit when the game is just as oppressive as other fighting games since you're still gonna have to learn to deal with all of the MU knowledge - which is what people are actually afraid of. The execution factor is usually a non-factor overtime since it just becomes muscle memory and you don't actually think about what your hands are doing they just do shit when you need them to. We'll see how this plays out but BBTAG did all the same things regarding accessibility and that game is nuts lol

@@GGenieFGC facts, learning Kazuya in the modern era of fighting games (started Tekken 7) made me go from "damn this EWGF input needs to be frame perfect, it has to be the hardest part of the game" to "yeah electrics are hard but the hardest part of them is using them in waevedash, backdash, sidestep and out of block on time and even then it's easier than actually learning real fundamentals and matchups" I also used to believe that only Mishimas have hard combos because they are the only ones with a just frame move but later found out they are not the only ones with just frames and a shit ton of characters without just frames have hard combos like Lili's b1 loops.
