*Sacrifice is compulsory / obligatory as per Quran* فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنِّي أَذْبَحُكَ فَانظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَا أَبَتِ افْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِي إِن شَاءَ اللَّـهُ مِنَ الصَّابِرِينَ ﴿١٠٢﴾ When He reached the age of power (maturity) He said “ Oh my son I إِنِّي saw أَرَىٰ in my sleep الْمَنَامِ, that I sacrificed you (أَذْبَحُكَ), so think what you say to it? He said “Oh my father, complete what you have been commanded/seen” Verily you will find me, by Allah from the patients. 37;102 فَلَمَّا أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُ لِلْجَبِينِ ﴿١٠٣﴾ When he agreed / submitted, He made him prostrate on forehead (جبِينِ). وَنَادَيْنَاهُ أَن يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ ﴿١٠٤﴾ And We called out to him “Oh Ibrahim” 37;104 قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ الرُّؤْيَا ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ ﴿١٠٥﴾ Definitely you have submitted to what you have seen (لرُّؤْيَا) in dream, verily for this We reward you, among the best. The test that awarded Ibrahim AS, ““The Father/Leader of Prophets”” إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ الْبَلَاءُ الْمُبِينُ ﴿١٠٦﴾ Verily this was for you both (father and son) a clear test. 37;106 وَفَدَيْنَاهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍ ﴿١٠٧﴾ And We replace him (Ismael AS) with the Greatest Sacrifice. Ismael AS was replaced by a lamb from paradise وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِي الْآخِرِينَ ﴿١٠٨﴾ *And We left it on you (Sacrifice and that day) to be followed, after you.37;108* *This is the verse / reason / reminder for celebration of this day as Idd Azdha as festival.* سَلَامٌ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ﴿١٠٩﴾ Peace on Ibrahim كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ ﴿١١٠﴾ In this way We award the good people The reason amongst other to make Ibrahim AS an example.37;110 إِنَّهُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿١١١﴾ Verily he was from our slaves and the from among the believers وَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِإِسْحَاقَ نَبِيًّا مِّنَ الصَّالِحِينَ ﴿١١٢﴾ And Good news for him, of Isaac from the Warner, from the righteous. وَبَارَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰ إِسْحَاقَ ۚ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحْسِنٌ وَظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِ مُبِينٌ ﴿١١٣﴾ Then we bless on him and on Isaac and his descendents of righteous and those who wronged themselves.

*SACRIFICED SON WAS ISMA'EEL ACCORDING TO THE QUR'AN* The one who was to be sacrificed was Ismaa’eel and not Ishaaq, because of the reasons stated above. In his Tafseer (commentary) on these Ayaat, Ibn Katheer also mentioned a number of points which prove that it was Ismaa’eel who was to be sacrificed. These points may be summed up as follows: 1. Ismaa’eel was the first child of whom glad tidings were given to Ibraaheem. He was older than Ishaaq according to the consensus of the Muslims and the People of the Book (Jews and Christians). According to the scriptures of the People of the Book, it was stated that Allaah commanded Ibraaheem to sacrifice his only son, and in some manuscripts it says that he was to sacrifice his first-born son. 2. The first son is usually more dear than other children, so the command to sacrifice him is a more exacting test. 3. It is mentioned that glad tidings of a forbearing boy were given, and that he was the one who was to be sacrificed. Later in the passage it says (interpretation of the meaning): “And We gave him the glad tidings of Ishaaq (Isaac) a Prophet from the righteous.” When the angels brought the glad tidings of Ishaaq to Ibraaheem, they said: “We give you glad tidings of a boy (son) possessing much knowledge and wisdom” [al-Hijr 15:53 - interpretation of the meaning]. 4. Allâh said (interpretation of the meaning): “But We gave her glad tidings of Ishaaq, and after him, of Ya’qoob.” (Hood 11:71) meaning that a child called Ya’qoob would be born during their (Sara and Ishaaq’s) lifetimes, and he would have many descendents… and it does not sound right for Ibraaheem to be commanded to sacrifice him when he was little, because Allaah had promised that he would have many descendents. 5. Ismaa’eel is described here (in Soorat al-Saffaat) as being “forbearing” because this is very appropriate in this context.
