Oyster mushrooms are by far the easiest mushrooms to cultivate at home. Oysters are available in several cultivars, including one that does not produce any spores. Several simple methods will be discussed including growing from commercially available kits and spawn bags. Other methods will include using toilet paper rolls, aspen horse bedding, straw, and scrap cardboard as substrates. Growth containers discussed will include zip-lock bags, plastic buckets, and pvc pipe. Cooking and preservation will also be covered.
Randy and his wife Joanie have been members of the MMS for about 10 years. They are also active members of the Wisconsin Mycological Society and the Geological Society of Minnesota. Currently retired, Randy taught biology at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul for 25 years and at St. John’s University/College of St. Benedict for two years. His favorite mushroom is Panellus stipticus.
