The janitor/custodian was in charge of wheeling-in the TV on the tall wobbly stand at our school, but yes, it was never a "bad" thing; ... It was the opposite (in our minds) of the dreaded overhead projector, which meant copying things (in the dark) onto lined-paper. God help you if you forgot to bring a pencil and an eraser.

In 1980, I was 6 when this show came out, I'm 49 now. And I must have seen each episode at least 10 times, especially when I was playing hooky from school.. Rewatching this now all I can ask is, "How long am I going to have it's theme stuck in my head! Ha Ha Ha! What a great show, I and my sister loved it. I think I had a crush on Ginny Ortiz, who played Trini, as well as Liz Moses who played Lisa.. I also loved "The Bloodhound Gang" ( I need that released on Blu-ray or something) that aired with 321-Contact. PBS shows were a big part of my child hood development, My parents never got cable until I was in college, so I grew up with only 5 or 6 channels, and PBS was on a lot during the day. Between Mr. Rogers, and Sesame Street, The Electric Company, From Cover to Cover, (also known as Readit). even to when I was in Junior high in 1988 and I pretended to be sick for a week, and watched "the Power of Myth" with Joseph Campbell around 1 pm.. I have a lot of fond memories attached to all those PBS shows.. Yet not all those memories are connected to happy times. I notice they always seem to be when I was out of school, away from teachers, and schoolmates. I keep seeing people commenting in these vids, talking about what simpler times the 80's were.. I'm like wow, I'm glad you remember it that way, but sadly I don't share that sentiment, I remember to much, I wish I had that total myopic nostalgia that a lot of people seem to have. I think it often comes with age, when people look back at their childhoods. There is nothing wrong with that, Just don't let it turn into the grumpy old persons "Back In My Day!!" grumble .. For my father, His Nostalgia, was for the child hood he had in 1940's and the 1950's of his teen years, and in his later years as he mellowed it became more about those who were no longer with us anymore. What's funny is how as I now see my fellow Gen X'er's forget a lot, as we enter our middle years, many talk like my dad did, when he was a middle aged man back in the 1980's, about his golden days, just as many X'er's seem to see the 1980's now, as their golden time, a kinder gentler decade. I've even heard older Millennials starting to feel the same way about the 90's and 2000's. I get it there are things I miss as well, and looking at our childhoods and youth will do that, because for each person those are their golden times.. Mine are scattered throughout all the decades I've lived so far.. Yet the 1980's were not a kinder or gentler time for me, it was, especially not in school.. That all being said, It's not that I only remember the bad things, I just feel every era in time is a mixed bag, and I remember both parts equally, the golden, and not so golden, and yes, things change, and people pass, like both my mother, and father. In a lot of ways my childhood was quite idyllic, and I have a lot of great memories with them and my sisters, and oddly this show is a part of those memories.. Sorry for the long rant. I Guess I was just making contact.

21:55 - 22:15. Those 20 seconds of this episode may well sum up the beauty of a time that we will never witness again. I am so glad I lived those years. I just wish I could have understood the importance of that period of time in my life, and how fast those times would fade away. I really think Lisa knew what she had at that very moment. I watch these episodes for the mental time travel. It takes me back to a world that is much kinder, gentler and emotionally healthy.

I think I learned more from this series than I did in school about science. I wish shows like this still existed. i'm sure with some digging I could find videos on RU-vid that are science based. Hey, EVERYTHING is great when you're a kid. Yeah, everything was better in the "good old days". Sure. Why? Because you were a damn KID. You didn't have adult responsibilities. EVERYONE has to grow up (unless you die young). Guess what? Today's kids think TODAY is the best of times. Old people think the 50's were the Best of times. Listen, like the song goes, "These are the good old days". Live in the present. You have no choice. The past is gone and will never come back.

Mixed feelings about seeing older models of DHH pedagogy, 20:22 :( That student is putting out extraordinary effort and demonstrates extremely high levels of competency in an area that arguably doesn't merit much focus; that of reproducing the sounds of the hearing community that I think we recognize today are not worthy of much effort! (Recognizing fully that I don't know that student's hearing ability, so maybe it is beneficial for her to develop speaking skills...but it certainly reeks of outdated thought, to be sure.) But then 21:09 where she also demonstrates the same effort and competency in spelling, which is a skill that still maintains value in the DHH community today, in my understanding.

Also...Absolutely dying to know what those two boys are saying to each other at 21:14! Any interpreters able to help?

My untrained eyes see some romantic intentions in the first boy's last communication... In our family, we say, "Howhmmmm" when there's a movie star kiss in a tv show or something. That sounds like a good translation.

The group after them sucked. I wonder if there hadn't been such a lag between seasons they might have kept the original 3

They weren't as good as the first cast, but I wouldn't say they sucked. And the new Bloodhound Gang mysteries were still very good. It wasn't until after 1986 that the show really went downhill, when they got rid of TBHG and changed to a pure documentary format with no storylines.

@@jhillst I read somewhere that the Bloodhound Gang Mysteries were still from the first season and they never made new ones

The BHG mysteries from 1983-84 were definitely new; there was even a different cast member (Seth Greenspan, who played "Skip"), and Vikki and Ricardo looked a bit older than in the first season. After Marcelino Sánchez (Ricardo) died in 1986, TBHG did end for a while, but later on some reruns were shown on a very periodic basis...perhaps that's what you were thinking of.
