ArtWorks Scotland - The Man Who Collected The World: William Burrell.
First broadcast: 29 May 2013.
William Burrell made a fortune out of shipping and spent it on art. Over his long life, he assembled one of the most remarkable private collections of paintings, sculptures, tapestries, ceramics and stained glass in the world and in 1944 he donated it all - over 9,000 objects - to the city of Glasgow. The Burrell Collection finally opened to the public in 1983 but the building that bears his name contains no tribute to Burrell and he never commissioned a portrait of himself.

There is a fatal flaw in our western culture and in terms of management and how people are selected for management posts. The "system" of rising through the ranks of any company or organisation is broken and our culture is dying because of it. From art galleries to car manufacturing to running the local kindergarten; the signs of decline are everywhere. But Why? Promotion and selection in most orginizations favors those who might not even care about the very culture they are a part of. Such individuals have ambition for the sake of ambition but it is based purely on self interest. Not enriching or improving culture - but gaining dominion and control of it. (looking at you wesminster & washington). Sociopaths are cunning - manipulative - greedy and are happy to sell out culture in favor of self gain. But the vast majority require culture in order to grow in learning and for much needed inspiration and pleasure in good things to enrich our days and the hours that pass. Without a healthy culture embedded in civilization - we sense that something is very wrong and a sadness enters our hearts and minds. And culture goes from vibrant to grey. A few get rich but everyone else ends up on anti-depressants and welfare as opportunity dies. Skid row awaits us. Because sociopaths can hide so well and ingratiate themselves in any given situation - everything that was good and helped us get out of bed in the mornings is ultimately eroded and trust is broken down by these people (who account for 72% and higher; of management positions). The reason why our economies are failing by the way is because of this (the most devious gets to the top). Why do socipaths destroy good things in our economic culture? Because the public intrinsically dislike the things that happen when these individuals take control of google - youtube or your local art gallery or games company etc.... Fatal decisions based on short term greed and focusing on financial gain alone begin to contaminate everything. Well loved brand names and organisations start to act out in shallow and manipulative ways that shock those who are their true patrons and customers!!! There is a feeling of betrayal and anger and almost a sense of grief that something we once loved - has been ruined or shortly will be. We can almost sense it. In the end - these entrenched and very manipulative individuals will destroy the business and organisations they often improve in the short term but in the long term (they have no creative or long term abilities); their lack of true vision - creativity and originality destroys the entire community for everyone. And that is the reality of 2018. A tiny percentage is growing in wealth etc....whilst everyone else gets to watch the things they enjoyed and which inspired them and their lives; become grey and monolithic; predatory and devoid of anything good.
