I just got my first RPi5 last week and am surprised at the IPC improvement over the Pi4. Its 2.4GHz stock speed easily outperforms my "main" Pi4 (stably running 2.4GHz OC all the time). My Pi5 can handle 2.9GHz OC (and 1GHz GPU) perfectly, but crashes consistently at 3GHz. I'm very happy with this performance.

I got the best stability when set these clocks: CPU: 3Ghz GPU: 950Mhz Over Voltage Delta: 50000 The temperature didn't raise over 55° I'm using the neo case with cooling fan. Also if I go over than 950Mhz with the gpu it crashes in Ray Tracer in Geekbench. Thanks for this video ❤

Great video! I put some 20W/m.K thermal pads in between the board and stock cooler, trying to account for different heights. I only get to 2900 and 950 before chromium/firefox start acting weird, but temps never go above 60 degrees and I am pushing a 3440*1440 screen on it. Can't hear the fan though :)

Data suggests something is bottlenecking the cores, could be a set clock speed within the new io rpi24 chip. I would run 25k 26k 27k 28k 29k see at what level it flips into high gear (888) range up from the 767 low range gear. Identify the change point.

@JeffGeerling

Yeah; apparently the clock settings in the silicon itself are where the 3.0 limit is defined, so no way to overclock past that outside of incredibly exotic techniques (which are likely to fail).
@LesPounder
@LesPounder 7 месяцев назад
@@JeffGeerling@leepspvideo I've got the same water cooling kit and I've confirmed with Gordon at RPi that 3GHz is the limit. Only vcgencmd returns the correct CPU speed, so you could "overclock" and other apps would incorrectly report the overclock (s-tui, neofetch etc) but vcgencmd would show that you've hit the 3GHz limit.

Thank you. It would be really interesting to test OC along with an external M.2 disk to boot the OS from for 'real-world stability testing'. The current drained when accessing the drive can freeze the OS and corrupt the file system (real case with ext4 in Raspberry Pi 5). It is still not clear what is the interplay between the parameters: over_voltage, over_voltage_delta, force_turbo, ..

I haven't tried any higher than 3200 cpu and 1100 gpu, with nothing else, so no overvoltage what so ever.. And it runs good, without any crashes. My Pi5 is from october 2023. Currently I am running it for a project so can't try something else (the project needs to be running all the time). Edit: I forgot to mention that GPU 1000 didn't work for me, it would crash all the time, but with 1100 it works fine (But again no overvoltage tested) and also with original powersupply. Without the origional power supply It would only run at a max of 3000.

Let's try to detach the water cooler and overclock it to 3.4 GHz to see how long the CPU can handle it.
@levieux1137
@levieux1137 7 месяцев назад
So as we could already expect, overclocking this board brings nothing at all. At 3.4 GHz it runs as if it were at 2.56, and at 3.15 with GPU overclocked as well it runs as if it were 2.58 GHz. That's very likely due to the sluggish memory controller as usual on such boards. That might be why they're selling them only at 2.4, that's the max reasonable frequency to see some gains and above there's nothing more except excess of heat. We'll see if they can come up with faster memory in a future model, who knows.

I agree - I think too many people (usually self-entitled gamers) play "Top Trumps" with their hardware these days just for bragging rights on social media - highest number of Ryzen cores, highest FPS on the biggest number of 4K monitors in simultaneous use, most number of kidneys donated by mummy and daddy to get their gamer brat the most expensive NVIDIA GPU for Christmas, etc. etc. No wonder games are so crap nowadays - the "Top Trumps" PC gamers could care less about the game contents any more!

I don't overclock anything because most of the time I could care less about numbers - ultimately, it's about how well the end device runs and learning to build Linux yourself in order to optimise it as much as possible helps to engineer a good working solution. If you need to overclock then that's down to you making a poor decision about your hardware - you need to specify it better and get something more powerful in that case.
