When I do the cork valve cover gaskets I stick them to the valve cover with Hy-tack and then put grease or anti-sieze on the other side so it does not stick to the head. Makes it really easy to pull the cover to retorque the head.

I have been known to replace the cork with silicon. Little grease on the rocker cover, run a bead of schmoo, little oil on the head, plop the cover on and let it set. Once it is set, pull it off to check you dont have wayward silicon, then screw it down tight. Presto, one reusable silicon gasket that (almost always) never leaks!

LandRoverLife This is also the best thing to do if you have taken it for a swim and it stalls, don’t turn it over, Jack it up, put it in 4th gear and remove the glow plugs or injectors depending on which is easiest to remove and watch the water squirt out 😂😂. Learnt that from a friend of mine with a Land Rover. It still ran fine after too.

As someone who used to rebuild, calibrate, and certify torque wrenches... I'm not surprised, but happy/impressed you know how to use a torque wrench. Nothing makes me cringe more than the double clickers... It's one and done. Don't touch the head of the wrench while you're applying torque, either.

The Sharpie marker for the head bolts is a great tip. For those of us who don't film while working, some Sharpie markers in different colors can come in handy. You can use a different color for each step of the torque sequence. So even if you step away from the job, you can easily tell where you left off.

Rich my local race engine shop said you check push roods on a pain of glass a steel work bench will always have waves in it. All flat glass windows are made perfectly flat so you do not get distortion viewing through them if the glas is bent well... it brakes lol
@jaredanthony8070
@jaredanthony8070 5 лет назад
Glass is always a bit of a fluid. Over years glass will sag, droop or flow downward so if you put a pane of glass over two saw horses the glass will arch. Apply heat and it happens much quicker. But in terms of checking pushrods if you roll them you can normally catch pretty minute bends relatively easily just by rolling it around only by eye

I used to calibrate torque wrenches. Accurate range is considered to be 20% to 90% of full scale. As you say, the micrometer setting wrenches are generally good for a long time so long as you back them off. Dial type torque wrenches need to be regularly calibrated and need to be babied. Dropping them, hitting them, generally almost any abuse can knock them out of calibration.
@hodwooker5584
@hodwooker5584 2 года назад
Very good explanation of how to treat a torque wrench! I also used to calibrate torque wrenches for the US Air Force. We noticed that many of the wrench’s that were out of spec came from the same work centers. When we investigated why those specific work centers had so many failures it was because of the wrench’s being backed off to the end stop before storage. Never back off a torque wrench past the minimum marked value!

Norbar has published several PDFs on the unloading of the tension of a mechanical torque wrench. Here is a link to the latest one on there site.www.norbar.com/Portals/0/Wind%20Torque%20Wrench%20Back%20Blog.pdf The difference between this latest statement and one published April 16 ,2018 is that they removed their statement that unloading the tension had little effect on the accuracy. In the latest statement they do stress not taking the bar to 0 but only to its design minimum setting.

Anti seize is king on earthmoving, since working with the stuff I've learnt anti seize paste ( copper grade etc ) is the go on all your external threaded fasteners, pins, circlip grooves etc unless spec not to do so. Also a bit on those injectors helps them come out again. Temp rating is usually sufficient.

I had a Valve Cover Gasket on an AMC I6 (Plastic Cover) kick my butt at wanting to leak, mostly because it had very few bolts. So a trick I learned is I made some wire clips that kinda looked like your average household staple, for a desktop stapler…anyway, they hold the gasket from moving around during installation, and maybe I was a little RTV happy…but try it…they work really well! - My dad who worked at Ford came up with the idea back in the 70’s when trying to put Valve Cover Gaskets on LARGE V8’s in the Mustang Chassis.

@12:45 - (wet) torque spec per application if unspecified will almost always torque to yield aside be a function of the fastener size and thread pitch. it's why a particular fastener size and pitch was selected. You're not going to find a 1/4-20 spec'd to 85 ft/lb, or a 3/4-16 to 20 inch pounds.

Do the next guy a favor. If your not going to put those rubber orings on the top of the injector housings, at least paint the injector bodies with antisieze or the will never come back out of the head without pulling the insert they set in. Then coolants going to gush out and the next guy will have to pull the head again when all he was after was a simple injector job. There's a reason for those orings up there. I can't believe they didn't send them. At the very least paint those injector housings with antisieze.

Always replace the copper washers. Copper work hardens, which means as you work it, it gets harder and then gets brittle. You can anneal copper to get it to relax back to its original softness, but we're talking about a few copper washers. Just replace them.

As mentioned below, alway check the relivant workshop manual regarding lubricating cylinder head studs prior to torqueing, it can lead to over torqueing if the manual specifies a dry fit. Some engines also require new studs to be fitted when the head is removed.

@mutt2jeff
@mutt2jeff 5 лет назад
Hey Rich, I have noticed you say something a couple times now. You lubricate your bolts and claim that it gives you a more accurate torque reading. This is not necessarily true. In the bolt torque and tension world, if lubrication is not called for, you don’t do it. Lubricating bolts can dramatically change the tension applied when the bolt is torqued to spec. Same goes for not lubing a bolt that calls for it. There is actually a case of a wind turbines nacelle falling off simple because the bolt were not lubed during erection. In short, adding to lube to your bolts before torquing them is not a hard rule to live by, its application dependent.

DEBOSS GARAGE the oil on the head bolts, crank main cap bolts and rod bolts reduce the amount of friction that occurs when being torqued there for giving you a more accurate torque. Cummins uses this on every engine we have to my knowledge.

One thing my dad showed me was paint the cork gasket (rattle can works fine) than the oil can't soak thru the gasket yet it still crushes fine. The pained gasket keeps the oil in the engine rather than out side, where it can do more good. Keeps the engine looking cleaner longer too which makes it look good for the customer.

Please let me say something though. It's fine to re-torque bolts that were not yielded but PLEASE never re-torque bolts that were yielded. If you've ever had a snapped bolt inside of a cylinder head on a torque to yield application, you can blame the previous mechanic for "retorquing" after a heat cycle. Once a fastener has reached yield strength, it cannot provide any more clamping force, turning it further will only weaken the fastener.
@DEBOSSGARAGE
