Water is the base of your survival, and should never be underestimated, so why over look your canteen set. The ability to house a one litre water bottle and have the ability to boil it in a container, is as important as your shelter kit and insulation....
Hear I demo THREE different styles of water boiling in a single pouch. Using a cheap but effective 58 pattern set, to my own dedicated water carry and boil set......

Nice comparison .. thanks. Aluminium? Have used it for years (Military Issue Mess Tins / Dixies) .. 70 Summers under the Belt and still kicking .. although my favourite Pot is my Stainless Steel Canteen Cup (aka 'Fire Bucket'). Fuel? Here in Switzerland, I use Gel Fuel ('Sicherheitsbrennpaste') in my little Esbit Foldable. A set of 3 Glass Jar Metal Screw-On Lids in different sizes take care of 'Burns' of different heat intensity .. and they stack nicely into one another. Getting a Boil with Gel Fuel? Have never had a problem .. Summer through to Winter incl. Home-Made Aluminium Windscreens that slot into the sides of the Esbit Stove do make a difference and are easy to make .. and also store, inter alia, inside the Stove.

"Is that the cold man?" "Yes darling." "You've not listened to him for a bit!" "I don't listen to him for a bit" 🤪 Cook set #3 for me, that's my style. My grandad used aluminium pans all his life, kept all his faculties right up to his death at 96! Great video Bex, all the very best to you and yours 👍 👍 👍 🍻

Welcome back. When two sets of scientists have conflicting views on aluminium, its best to not listen to either, and make your own decision, we have the option to use stainless steel or titanium if in doubt. My grandad used cast iron died at 76, mother used aluminium died at 87, dad smoked drank scotch every day, eat eggs every day, died at 72. I think humans have a predetermined life spam from birth, so just avoid being hit by a bus, and we'll be fine....lol

Thanks for sharing. I'd love to get my hands on a metal cup for the P58 water bottle, but New Zealand. For most things, I use the Yugo bot and cup lid, but put the gas stove, cannisters, lighter utensils, cloth etc inside instead of the canteen. Keeps it together nicely in the pack. Always appreciate your thoughts and experience on what works for you.

Sounds great! There is a part two coming up soon of non surplus, The water is carried separately from the pack, for trail hiking, making light weight camping/trekking more enjoyable.....bex

Hello Bex and I really enjoyed yòur video and I used to like the smell of hexamine fuel and I didn't know it has arsenic in it . Thanks for sharing and all the best...David

Some hate the smell of it, I don't mind it either. Arsenic kept the hexamine burning longer and hotter, and was once also in cigarettes too.....Thanx for watching

Well informative video as always. I use the same systems plus the pathfinder us gi style metal cup and canteen except the British 58 bottle system because I still havent found it available yet. I strongly believe that the 58 osprey bottle cup and hexi stove its the most versatile of all the above mentioned. I usually alternate the hexi stove with a savotta grumpy wood stove which can easily fit a trangia burner inside or fuel blocks or even hexamine blocks. I believe that its more versatile to fuel availability regarding terrain and time of year when needed.I think that the pathfinder metal lid of the us army steel cup can fit the crusader cup with a little bit of a gap,but it will do the job. I dont like the plastic lid that the crusader cup comes with,so i think that it might be a good solution. As of the aluminium risk I agree with you that its minimal.I use aluminium mess kits over two decades now at my hunting and bushcraft excursions without any observable health problems...

Great Video Brother Bex! Hope all is well cross the Big Pond. Just chilling inside for a short period, Hot day here in Swansea,SC. About 90 deg F. or 32 Celsius. Hope you are able to get to go hiking, maybe the ban has been lifted. Oh I like the big container that fits over a canteen, or under. Gotta get one. Thanks for keeping us all entertained and up and informed during this crazy time. My Navy hat's off to Ya mate. Keep doing what you do best. Be Safe Brother Cheers!

Weather has been terrible here, windy chilly & damp, but we did have 3 hours of summer sun last week....lol Hopefully I will be out and about a whole lot more soon, I partial ban lift, is I think more to do with the failing economy, rather than the virus decreasing....IMHO Part 2 water carry coming soon, something quite different. Till then take care...bex

Had a really bad batch of hexi last weekend, but if its firm and waxy you got some good non smelly stuff. The beauty of a Hex cooker is 16 boils fit into your cargo pocket, as where 16 boils of the newer gel blocks is not as transportable, a fact (Fan boys) of Gel blocks seem to overlook....bex

Can’t believe the MOD swapped good quick heating hexi for that other gel or blocks tried it and it’s total rubbish. Arsenic in the Hexi was never a problem outdoors, a slight breeze took care of that. Totally agree with you on the crusader mk1 being better than the anodised just isn’t as good size, shape, material. Used Hexi since the 80’s regularly with either my crusader or a Dutch mug as my only cooking vessels and stove. WilI miss the stuff when it becomes harder to get. I have a gas stove but not as keen, but is useful on occasions just hate carrying out empty canisters. Great video and good to see I have similar opinions, been camping and hillwalking for a long time. Missed it recently

With you all the way on Hexi topic. Someone else in the comments swears by the new type Gel, guess each to their own, you'll never please everyone with the same kit. The gel blocks are too bulky to fit 8 inside the cooker either..... . The Arsenic comes from the block being extinguished by blowing it, out,and releasing a toxic vapor. I have been using then since the 80s. Others in the comments will only comment on it if I don't. The MK! Crusader sits better on stoves tops, as the MK 2 has an annoying indentation, I also like the SS GSI Glasier pot too. ..... As I knew Hexi will be difficult to get hold of in coming years, I have made my own alternative fuel source, that sits inside the hex cooker, gives more burns, and seems to burn hot enough too. I will make a Quick Tips vid of that soon,...bex

Looking forward to that video then for a good Hexi replacement. Don’t think I have ever blown out Hexi in all the years used them. Just used to put one full one on let it burn out or added quarters if needed extra. I bought the mk2 mug a year ago but back with the mk1 permanently.

I like the JNA mess kit, (i have 3 of them, 2 with lids) I have made a crisp omelette in mine a few times but as you pointed out, its not ideal for that. ... Just some Random Waffle, the bag it comes in can be used as a improvised mill bank type filter. The metal section of the mess kit is the 'main/meat bowl' the plastic bowl is for 'soups' and the small container on the bottle was intended for 'salad' which would have been coleslaw. The whole set can be held in one hand while collecting food from a field kitchen.
@bexbugoutsurvivor
@bexbugoutsurvivor 4 года назад
I have tried the JNA bag like a mil bank too in the past, works great. I have a method to speed up the filter process using the original milbank (no more dip dip dip) any more, comes out at a much better rate, seems pointless dripping it out of if it still needs boiling, compared to other dripping field filters such as sawyer that removes bacteria....lol I would be gutted getting salad after a days work in the field...lol ATVB...bex

Arsenic has another side to it as a performance enhancing drug in small doses. Personally I'd keep well away from hexi fumes but I do think that the dangers are exaggerated.
