One tip from me: if a leader asks you ’can we try something risky’ do not, I repeat, DO NOT say yes. I learned this the hard way. I said yes thinking it was some new combination that I might fail and then we could just laugh it off but no, next thing I know I was up in the air in a weird twisted position and my lower back got hurt. I would have never even imagined a leader might do something so inconsiderate and stupid especially when he knew I was a beginner. He probably saw some trick on youtube and wanted to give it a go. So my advice as a beginner follower is to not be deceived to think that every more advanced leader is going to be a good and trustworthy leader. When you enter the dance scene you might feel quite intimidated by everyone’s level but don’t be fooled, it’s not what it seems at first. Don’t underestimate yourself as a beginner, because being a good dancer doesn’t mean you have to know cool tricks.
We are so sorry to hear that this happen. We have definitely seen our share of situations like these on the dance floor. It is most important to be safe first!
What should I do as a follower if I don’t Know the move my partner is trying to lead? I understand they should try out easier things If we’ve never danced before and move up from there but that doesn’t always happen. Sometimes I’m dancing with someone who sets an intention and I have NO idea what I’m meant to do In response! Should I just do.. anything in that direction and apologize? 😱
How do you learn the signals unless you are taught during a teaching session like this one? Then you need to practice a lot!!! 🥵 I only get to dance with a good lead once a week for 45 minutes! I want to speed up my learning curve!
Awesome video! As a male instructor, I thought it was great to see a lady instructor explain the mindset and role of the follower! Following is an art and science that we often gloss over in classes! ❤
This is AMAZING!! I’m Dominican and I’m learning more tips and ways to be a better dancer with your videos. this is incredibly helpful and sooo awesome! ❤❤
Wow, that's awesome to hear! As a fellow Dominican, I'm glad our videos are helping you become a better dancer. Your support means a lot to us, and we're here to assist you on your dance journey. If you have any more questions or need more tips, just let us know. Keep up the great work!
Been taking your in person class for a month now with 0 social dancing experience and I’m loving it! Your instruction is so good without being intimidating. I have no idea how to follow, these tips are great. Thank you.
I love your channel. I have learned so much from you two. I am a woman learning to lead but sometimes listening to your sage advice, it can sound so patriarchal. NOt a criticism so much as on observation. And I know that i am more sensitive to this because of my efforts at role reversal. Anyways, carryon. Your video are the most helpful that i have found anywhere. Even better than my inperson private class. You are great teachers
I've been looking for tips/ tutorials on following and reading the signals. I've done a lot of group classes and boot camps and tons of UTube but once I'm done and want to go dancing at a club I don't have a regular partner snd don't really know the signals and how to interpret them. Any help in this area is much appreciated
