My three tips go just like that: 1. Don't overfocus on sessions: 20-30 minutes in a session is just the right amount to keep your head free. 2. Search RU-vid and create a sample playlists and glimpse into many different genres, think about the approach of different songs. Ask yourself what difficulties these artists may have come across, to improve your workflow, process and knowledge. 3. Commission means commitment: So if you work for/with others, you should be able to always have plan Bs. My bad habits are these: 1. I don't safe that often, as I should. 2. Looking for fitting contexts soaks so much on my creative space. 3. I hate awaiting spontaneous results

great video! Right now my biggest hurdle when it comes to making beats is that I'm stuck in the same process/work flow. And at this point, I feel really uninspired by that process. So I actually dont know how to break through that one right now. But, being a musician for like 15-16 years, I know that one can not wait for inspiration, you simply have to do, to make, create. And all of a sudden, you make something that you feel really proud of. That's what hard work does. Thats the yield.
@theycallmeheat
@theycallmeheat 2 года назад
one way to break your cycle is to try a brand new daw or reverse your process. Try new things to bring out inspiration. Maybe make some beats on your phone or something. Just trying new things will take you out of that cycle.
@jjbing3
@jjbing3 2 года назад
If that happens, I do just like Heat said. I’ll go buy a new piece of equipment, I try a new daw, new plugin, new style/genre. I recently got into modular synths. 🤷🏾‍♂️. Be inspired
@16sumo41
@16sumo41 2 года назад
@@theycallmeheat Yeah. Reversing my process is something that I've tried, but with minor success. But I will definetely try that again and also as @jjbing3 said: new plugins and such, that's a huge inspiration. Also trying other genres. I've been dabbling in chillhop for a while now. Maybe I should try and make something completely different. ^^

One thing you could do: Say you're a type beat producer... Make 5 beats of the same type, using the exact same drum loop. Then, force yourself to make each rendition of the drums different from all the others.

Good Habits : 1.Save as you Go. " any new element or sound addition I automatically Ctrl + S" many times I would accidentally alter my beat in the moment and could never get it back to its original form. 2. I make two to three variations of the same sample, it's helps create variety to hold the attention of your audience. Then stack them for the finale BAD HABITS: ☠️ adding too many sounds cluttering the beat. A wise person once told me "less is more" ☠️using the same kicks & snares / or beat pattern ☠️paralysis by over analysis- i overthink some of my ideas instead of keeping things simple. As a creative thinker your mind is light-years ahead of people and sometimes your vision can get in your way of production

All three were on the money! My biggest hurdle was thinking every "Beat" needs a "Rapper"! Bullshit, some beats are great in video production, etc.

My biggest fear is never being heard. Like i always compare my beats to legends and other producers i follow and i be like “what if im really really trash and what i make isnt good enough??” And that fear is gripping. Because i want to be a living legend but when i hear my beats and compare them to those whove come before me the realization of how long i still have to go because painfully obvious.
@theycallmeheat
@theycallmeheat Год назад
you have to continue working. alot of our "legends" didnt become legends until LATER. or someone like Quincy JOnes who produced one of the biggest albums in history, happened for him at 50 years old. So you have so much time, just use it wisely to grow & work on building your sound.

great video, great advice! i'd say another huge one for a lot of people is analysis paralysis, or in other words overthinking small, trivial stuff way too much... and of course being a gear snob (we all know one of those) often doesn't help the creative process hehe

This was a sign.. I got beat over the head twice today about using my phone instead of cooking up somethin! I even hung a 65" TV in my studio and the WORST habit is turning it on before turning on my equipment! 😳 Good job on the video Heat! 🙏🏾 Your message was on point and we as beatmakers needed to understand how to refocus! 💯🙏🏾👏🏾

Yer I never delete anything and offen go back to unfinished projects and finish them or make something new out of a 10 plus year old project. I'm going to be sending unfinished projects to another producer and just say any credit split 50/50 if they finish My unfinished projects. Sometimes I get so far and run out of ideas on some projects but someone else could take it somewhere I cant or dont have time to.

Wow good question I admit I’ve done beats that weren’t good back in the early 2000 then got criticized it sound too techno so i had to readjust myself years later to listen to classic beats done by producer legends and focus on my creativity fail is part of a lesson but success is what make you a king 👑
@Cnova544
@Cnova544 2 года назад
True, I used to erase my bad and unfinished beats up until a year ago I started saving everything. Then at one point I'll go back and try to do something with them and found out the majority of the time I'll come up with some fire!!! Great video Fam!!!

I relate to the part about how creativity gets curtailed when I mix while making a beat. Gonna make a beat first then mix it the next time round
@theycallmeheat

Yeah, me personally i’m a perfectionist so it hinders me from creating a full piece of work without always criticizing it along the way. Lol

I definitely have a problem with going back to beats and constantly doing them over trynna make em better because I learned some new technique
@theycallmeheat
@theycallmeheat 2 года назад
I would put that energy into making new beats when you learn those new techniques, so you dont get caught up in the old stuff. But if you feel you have to make the old better but hinders you from creating something fresh, then it might be time to change the process.

Yo Heat that third point about other’s opinions is spot on. I don’t ever worry about hoping everybody is gonna like what I make. I don’t even like everything my favorite musicians and artists make! I make what I wanna hear lol! If somebody happens to like it then that’s cool too.
