Crayola, for me as a beginner, is the most difficult to use. Even holding the pen properly, it is VERY difficult to get thin lines. I have to move the pen to a practically vertical angle to get a relatively thin line. It is very awkward to transition back and forth. No real problems with Tombow brush pen or Fudenosuke pens. Have not tried the Pentel brand or the particular Kuretake mentioned, though I do have some metallic Kuretake pens that are great for larger lettering.

Hey there! People who are very light handed tend to have a harder time with Crayola because you do have to push hard to bend the nib. Though most of my students find it a relief using Crayola over the smaller pen! The Pentel is like the Tombow fude soft nib so you’ve tried that. And the Kuretake is the same nib in the metallic you have 😊

Just bought some pentel brush pens a few days ago. I started with tombow and a sharpie brush pen and they are not all that great for beginners but so many people recommend them. I saw a previous video where you mentioned the pentel ones and I love them! Thanks for your videos and workshop. They are so helpful.

Sarah, thank you so much for your honest and extremely helpful advice. I was trying to revive my calligraphy skills, using hard tips like I used to when I was younger. After discovering brush lettering online, I tried it, with frustrating results. I practiced, but just couldn't find a good feel. Then I found your RU-vid channel, and tried the Crayola markers I keep for my grandkids. Totally blew my mind how effective they are! Then yesterday I got a set of Pentel Fude Touch pens. They do exactly everything for my handlettering that you described. So bouncy and responsive! My lettering still needs work, but now my practice is much more fun and satisfying. Thanks again, and keep encouraging us!💗

I have tried a few different brush pens trying to figure out which ones works better for me. Although I do need to learn more hand lettering first, other than my dabbling in it so far. I really struggle with writing pretty letters the most as a beginner because my handwriting is terrible but I am told I can still learn some type of calligraphy. Question #1, whwere should I start just to learn how to make pretty letters? 2nd, as far as name brands go, so far I do not like crayola or tombows or Pitt markers. I feel like I do better with watercolor brushes. Like real nylon strand brush, but some one sent me one Kelly Creates brush marker in some happy mail and I like it, so I have ordered some that being shipped. Do you happen to have these and know what kind of brush top it is so that I could find similar ones . As a newbie the hard, soft , hard at the bottom soft tip is not a concept I am understanding well enough to make choices right now. Sorry so long, but hope you can help me get started with some things that you offer as I love your videos!

@mona5155

I agree that the Pentel Touch brush pens (with hard tip) are good for beginners, in my opinion the best choice to start with brushlettering and to learn the Basics. In my opinion they should be the First ones. I bought the tombow fudenosuke and they are comparable, also really good brushes but with one big disadvantage: they are not waterbased, Not blendable. The Edding 1340 brush pens are very good Brushes for the next step/the next Level (Not for start as a beginner, as I did) and comparable with your kuretake, bouncing but handable and a good one to start with larger letters. And the biggest mistake ever is to try your start as newbie with tombow Abt Dual! I will never understand why these saleswoman sold me this pen in a starter Set?? No way …or the best way to feel like a looser and to give up lettering before started!

I have heard so many people say the same thing about Tombow dual brush pens!! I also love Edding brush pens. They’re nice and firm but still bouncy!

@EnsignInsights
@EnsignInsights 5 лет назад
Ooh that’s a tough choice! I like both but I recommend Kuretake fudebiyori because it’s a little easier to use to start. Marvy colorin has a longer nib that’s really bouncy which is great quality! But it’s more of a personal preference 👍

Hi, I am a newbie and trying to find a brush pen I like. I am not a big fan of crayola or Tombow so far. I seem to do better with watercolor bristle nibs but I want a marker. Some one sent me one Kelly Creates dream brush pen and I think I like it and have ordered a set. Do you have these in order to explain the nib to me because it would help if I learned what I do and not like about the nibs. Thanks for any help! Love your videos!
@EnsignInsights
@EnsignInsights 5 лет назад
Hey there! The bristle nib is a great option if you feel more comfortable with that! It’s all about finding what pens work best with your style! I have a video here where I talked about pens with bristles like that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FiVGCDGihvY.html

My Hubby had the audacity to say I have too many pens! Too many pens! No such thing. I may have over 25 fountain pens, 50 plus Muji pens and hundreds of brush pens. And I love the Pentel Touch pens. I also love the Tombow. But have to re mortgage the house to buy them. I have some of the Crayola pens that have a smaller nib. They are good value.

Hello Sarah! if you have to choose between Crayola broadline or super tips for small/medium lettering but also for coloring for example mandalas, what would you buy? i can’t decide since they don’t sell them in Spain and I have to order them online.
@EnsignInsights
@EnsignInsights 5 лет назад
Ivan Mora That’s a great question! I might choose supertips because they’re smaller for coloring and they give smaller lettering but still medium sized. And they come in lots of colors! 👍

Have you tried the Faber Castell Pitt Artist Brush pens? I wonder how comparable they are to those kuretake fudebiyori ones. They have a fairly small, thin soft brush nib. But since they seem thinner and softer than the fudebiyori ones that are firmer if I understood correctly, I wonder how they would look side to side
@EnsignInsights
@EnsignInsights 3 года назад
That sounds like a great comparison! They're very different in my opinion. Faber Castell is very unique. They are firm but skinny which is different from Kuretake fudebiyori. I wouldn't say they're similar at all but I love them both and think they are both easier to start with than larger brush pens!

The brush pen! The felt tip ones won’t work for brush lettering since the tip doesn’t bend.

@EnsignInsights 5 лет назад
Yes! @ScarletTheGoldie is right! A lot of people start with Tombow and love them. I’ve noticed most people find them more difficult to get used to than other pens which is why I don’t recommend them to start, but that doesn’t mean it’s not doable! 👍

Ensign Insights have you used them on regular copy paper or do you have to use specialty paper, like Rhodia or laser jet paper?

I normally use them on smooth paper but I have used them occasionally on rough paper like watercolor paper and they still haven’t frayed. But I think if they were constantly being used on rough paper, they would wear down faster.
