With grip break #3, BJJ white belts will be able to not only break the grip but also knock out the opponent via elbow to the face

As a high school football player "I've never been called for it" really resonates with me

I also really appreciate the personal notes in your videos. Like the fact you said that you dislike #3, explained why and told us who used it. Those are the little things we don't get taught by an average sensei, but only by a pro.

Thanks for the video. I just saw a recent promo you did with BJJ Fanatics where you referenced a “European grip break” however the camera angle didn’t allow us to see. Can you please show this.

Thanks for the instruction. My background is 30 yrs of wrestling(including college). A second degree blackbelt in bjj. But still have issues on some grip breaks involving the belts. When guys on feel tie up, and hold my belt right above my butt. I am short, and long armed opponents can sometimes hold my takedowna at bay holding my belt there. I need to figure out how to clear it. Thanks

#1 is borderline illegal, but I'm going to try it sometime just for the indignant looks from my opponents. I already use #2 ad I find it pretty effective. I'm going to use 3 all the time!

I've never been called for the first one. I'm not sure what is Illegal about it. I know I put my thumb in but like I said Ive never been called for it.

@@TravisStevensgrappling thank you for the reply. Knee cut, strait collar and near side sleeve. It's the worst when they pull the sleeve to lift my elbow off the mat. I have a hard time breaking either grip.

Hi Travis! Great content, as always! Is the last one legal according to the latest IJF rules?
@TravisStevensgrappling
@TravisStevensgrappling 4 года назад
Yes it is but it can be seen as a defensive grip break. So if you do it to much you could get a shido.

Grip break 3 looks like it really works quite effectively. Question: is it a shido to use that technique??

Yes because you can unnecessarily twist your partner's fingers, or elbow his face

Bjj guy learning judo here. The grip we're breaking here, from ai yotsu, looks like a straight arm post that I mainly see when stalling. Do the grip breaks work as well for when opp has straight lapel or cross collar grip with his lead/power hand? Those are the grips I find myself having to deal with much more than the rear hand straight lapel grip. Thx

Solid Travis good tips man, rock climbers and police have that grip of death that is so hard to break. And who's the guy with the downvote? He probably can't even tie his belt right.

If you use these grip breaks in international rules, do you have to attack soon after? If you don't will you get a penalty for defensive gripping? When is not ok to use these grip breaks?

Number three acts like a wrist lock- I will warn my training partners prior to executing this grip break. It traps your wrist and is very unpleasant. Maybe a great way to manage that guy that lives and dies with a grip and stagnates the exchanges!
