Hello, friends!
Oh goodness, what a week!
I made it my goal this week to reroute the time I'd normally spend on social media to reading instead. I really want to be more mindful of how I spend my time...and I'm also very behind on my goodreads goal. It was incredibly eye-opening realizing how many times I went to reach for my phone throughout the work day. By reading a page or two of a book each time I felt the social media urge, and listening to audiobooks while doing more mindless tasks, I was able to finish 3 books!
This week I read:
"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini
"Daily Rituals, How Artists Work" by Mason Currey
"Magic Lessons" by Alice Hoffman
It's been very productive but I must admit that I'm ready for some weekend rest. Do you have any fun, autumnal plans this weekend?

My thoughts on audiobooks: if listening to a book doesn’t count, what about all the children who hear books read by parents or teachers? What about partners who take turns reading to each other to share a book? Some of the most beautiful ways to experience stories and build connections. Listening to stories matters!

I agree so much! Also, what about all the stories that only ended up being written down because they were first told through generations? Oral tradition of story telling is such a big and important part of human culture and history, way before writing was ever invented stories were told and listened!

I’ve started reading books while breastfeeding instead of checking social media, and I am LOVING it! I have learned a lot and read some amazing stories! I’m on track to read 20 books this year, and that’s a record for me! ❤️ I loved this video so much!

I agree. There are times where I’m watching RU-vidrs talking about books more than actually reading😂. I’m also someone who feels like listening to audiobook is ‘cheating’ as someone who listens to them while working as well. ❤️

@Makai Threads it depends on the book. Nonfiction is like a lecture so its easier for me. But for me, my job is pretty much on autopilot so I can pay attention to audiobooks. I forgot no matter what the format 🤣

My husband and I worked together as team truck drivers for almost 9 years and without audio books, I would not have survived! Even now off the truck for good, I love them while taking walks, cleaning, crafting, cooking. Just finished Frankenstein while baking focaccia. But now I am actually able to use the library which I haven’t been able to do for almost 9 years! So I’m reading the physical copy of Agatha Christie’s Endless Night.

Such a pretty sticker and postcard! I adore them! And I think audiobooks are undervalued for sure. I personally have a hard time listening to them because if I space out for a moment or two, you can miss so much, and I'm definitely a bit of a spacer, haha! Much easier to reread a sentence. But I think they're a great mode to consume books for those who enjoy them!

You and Landon with the tea cup honestly reminded me so much of me and my mom lol. One of us can have a drink and the other will just take it, take a sip, and hand it back all without paying any real attention. 😄I love audiobooks, but I admit that I sometimes feel bad listening rather than physically reading too, more so though because I sometimes lose patience and speed it up just to get through when I know physically reading I would probably slow down and try to savor the book more instead.

I love listening to audiobooks at bedtime, it takes me back to childhood of stories being read to me. Well done on all your milestones. I am taking a day a week off Instagram. It can be so easy to spend all time on social media and it can be so harmful for us.

I agree with you regarding the book "Daily Rituals" and the benefits of taking a nap during the day. I'm also enjoying your footage of Portland neighborhoods and shops. I just got back from visiting a friend that lives there and I was in awe of the old growth trees and the beautiful fall foliage. Regarding audiobooks, I think it is the same as reading. I agree with you that you can catch a lot of the details and nuances that you may not have noticed with the usual method of reading. For visual artists, it can be a very useful and enjoyable way to both read and work on your creative projects.

That Rooibos tea is my jam! Thank you for posting it last time. And you had me at Joan Miro and Joyce Carol Oates in the daily routines book. Maybe I’ll give it a shot. I saw a story on CBS Sunday Morning many years ago about cigar rollers in Cuba. They were all sitting at tables outside under a covered pergola, rolling Cohibas while a man sat at a table up front and read to them. It was awesome. It counts.

Yes! I agree about being mindful with social media. I’ve been trying to be mindful of how much screen time I’ve been doing and been decreasing it and trying to decrease it even more. This past week your videos have been a comfort to me since I’ve had a hard family situation happening and your read with me videos have been especially comforting with the comforting books I’ve been reading. I finally got to watch this video and omg it couldn’t have came at a better time! I’m not working right now cause of covid but I do help my parents babysit a lot Last night I was at the vet for over two hours getting my poor baby dog cleaned up and medicated (allergies has been horrible this year) and today I took her to her groomer so I’m a little stressed but I feel so motivated now to read a book! I think I beat myself up on thinking I have to read 50-100 pages every single day and then I don’t even want to try lol. I need to look at reading as something I love not as a sport Thank you so much Morgan!

I know everyone says audio books are the same as reading, but while I agree the value is equal, I do find I get far different things from each. One thing missed in audio for me is seeing what words new to me look like, which helps them stick with me better. Also, I completely do not understand listening to them sped up? Maybe, if I was consuming the book to learn something, say for a class, but not for pleasure reading such as a novel. Life goes fast enough as it is. I like my pleasure reading to be savored and often read a particular paragraph twice just because I love the way it flows. I don't want reading to be a race like so much else in life is.

The opening of this video was so soothing! I'm so proud of all you were able to accomplish on your to do list and all that you've accomplished in your career! It seems so daunting when its all listed out but I'm so impressed by how you organize your work and manage to maintain boundaries with yourself in re social media. Such a weird coincidence - the book I brought to bed to start reading is Practical Magic and I said to myself I will finish watching this video first (I started the first five minutes during lunch) and then start to read my novel. Couldn’t believe it when you started discussing the series. Practical Magic is one of my all time favorite films - mostly for the atmosphere!

I love reading out loud. My parents read to me...I read to my dearest MOTHER when her eyesight was failing. I got a thumbnail about: 3 Musketeers- BBC production. On Prime= 3 seasons. At least 30 episodes. So, I had to get the Dumas version for Kindle/ebooks. And an additional Dumas bk: The Queen's Necklace. The pg ct is TERRIFYING. 683 for Q Necklace & over 12k for 3 Musketeers. Yes. It is Kindle, but still. I think this will be THE project for 2022. I so appreciate your time Morgan. So nice to check in/peek in and see what yr doing, working on & reading.
