Great video, especially the understanding that roots need oxygen whereas fine sand 'can' create and anaerobic area. The co2 produces from the bacterial processes, is also often overlooked. As are other carbon sources. I've not done a walstad type setup yet, but understand the methodology. Most of my planted tanks so far have used various aquasoils. Understanding the active nature of most aquasoils upon gh kh and ph is also overlooked by the average person wanting a planted tank. ADA amazonia gold is no longer in production but the orange is still being made.

Cheers mate :). Any plans for a Walstad style tank? If I can free up the space I would love a full rack of just Walstad Setups next year. Yea i've seen a few people mention the ADA Amazonia Gold thing, so far I've only ever used Fluval Stratum on the Aquasoil side of things but it does what I need.

My tank is old and only has inert gravel in it. If I was starting over, I think I would use soil, topped with sand. I can get some rooted plants to grow, but it's pretty slow. A lot of forum posts and RU-vidrs tell you to use root tabs in inert substrates, but it leaches a lot. I use quite a bit less than the recommended amount, but it still leaches for a good 3/4 weeks. I have gravel at around 5mm large, so maybe it's the size that's the problem.

Could be the gravel size mate but I honestly think a lot of root tabs are overrated. Blake from Blakes Aquatics did a test with a bunch of popular ones and the results were very different.

Cheers mate, the two females constantly spawn so its often just the eggs developing but one of the males would just eat everything in the tank and I ended up having to put him on a diet >.

I love your angel tank! What size + filtration do you run?

I don't keep angel fish mate but the 40 gallon uses a Fluval FX2 canister filter.

@@SolRahji I just realised what you mean, that Angelfish tank is the one from @horizonaquatics its not one of mine, I think the use an Oase Biomaster on it but I'm not 100% sure.

I just used soil from the garden and filter sand, about as cheap as it gets.
