Hey Bud. A quick comment on contact patch and an experiment you can do to prove this point. Contact patch size is not as important as some may think. Experiment: take any object with different sized sides. A rectangular block of wood or rubber will work well. Put it on a flat surface e.g. a table and tie a string with enough weight to barely drag the block across the table. Now put the object on its side and do the same thing (with the string and the weight). You'll observe that the size of the contact patch does not affect the friction it produces. It will produce the same friction whether on its large flat side or small thin side. The tire material and the downforce on the tire may be more critical than the size of the contact patch which is mostly influenced by PSI and load combined. This is in a controlled environment, obviously. But not enough folks understand this concept. Lastly, THANK YOU for what you do! You most certainly save lives.
@hair2050
@hair2050 Год назад
Correct tire pressure for the conditions, specifications, is surely critical too? A graph of air pressure grip and would be helpful. There is I assume a middle ground that has some leeway.

Here's a way to make this experiment easier. Grab a couple 10lb weights. Grab two pieces of plywood 3/4" or thicker. Cut one 12"X24" and cut another 8"X12". Put one 10lb weight on the ply wood, either size first. Attach a string to the edge of the wood with another 10lb weight on the other end. Add some small weight to the string end until the plywood moves. It will take the same force to pull the large piece of wood and the small piece of wood as the weight on the wood will be distributed over a larger area, thus producing the same total friction on the surface. This changed my perspective on contact patch once I understood this. A lot of words in this post, but worth it.
@irishtrash5
@irishtrash5 Год назад
I can't be bothered to make the actual experiment, but what you're not getting with this experiment off the bat is the multiple forces at play when cornering, or turning in general, and the widely variable surface of a road in the space of 2 - 6 square inches. In your experiments the speed is all very slow, with only gravity as your "force." ... Or is that what you're saying? Maybe I missed something....
@davidecatanese
@davidecatanese Год назад
@@MrDeepseadweller Practically, it's only relevant in understanding how friction impacts grip... in a controlled environment. I suppose it's because I hear the words "contact patch" mentioned more often than than word "friction" when talking about tire grip. Thank you for the comment!
@davidecatanese
@davidecatanese Год назад
@@irishtrash5 Thank you! I'm only talking about friction in a controlled environment. You are very correct, that on a road/track that has bumps/gaps in surface contact having a larger contact patch will allow a part of the tire to be in contact with the road at all times, while also providing some suspension. Side note: I think the speed of the break in friction is only related to the force applied, but not sure about that. I hope MotoJitsu reads these comments, love to know if he's thought about this.

Quick mention about holding neutral throttle, particularly on the longer corners, you have to make sure you are in a position to modulate/maintain your speed in a controlled way. Finding yourself slowing down too much mid corner and reaching for the throttle will unsettle the ballance of the bike and if you're not careful you can snatch at it.

Watch Keith Code's the twist of the wrist, you go on the throttle immediately after you're done braking. When going on the throttle and slowly build acceleration you change the geometry of the bike, you will ride on the big fat rear tyre instead of coaching on the front tyre.

Your finger drag release has help me with smother clutch and braking releases. Not sure if you talked about it before but I noticed it in your videos when you ride and it's been night and day for me as a beginner. Especially, not having any stalls from dropping the clutch when trying to take off quick(er) at a light after filtering.

Although trailing off the brakes is something racers recommend (and is the fastest way around a corner), in lower traction conditions, you can be off the brakes and throttle entirely before tipping in (trail off before tipping in)... this way, as you corner, although the rake/trail are less favorable, with the suspension even at both ends, the rear tire can share more of the cornering load. It's faster to trailbrake, but in cooler weather I have lost the front trailbraking into a corner (I live in Canada). I would not trailbrake unless the conditions were ideal (warm, dry, at the track). It's slower, but less risk. Even though your contact patch is larger, it's hard to say how much of the traction pie is left at the front when you are braking and cornering at the same time. What do you think of my logic? :)

thx bro i never thought that way about the front tyre. so it turns out its good to hold the brake a little during the turn to keep the stronger front grip
