THANK YOU for acknowledging the invasive nature of English Ivy in the US! As responsible gardeners, we should not be planting it at all. So glad to hear that this fatshidera is NOT invasive…love those huge, prehistoric leaves!
Oh gosh Erin. I'm saving this video, because like you I love the unordinary!! The ones no one see, the ones that are fabulous! Thank you dearly for sharing! I'm going to need a greenhouse to overwinter in Reno, NV!!!
I love what you're doing with these. It's super inspiring seeing plant combinations that are unlike everything else you see on RU-vid or out in the world. These containers are going to be gorgeous.
I just planted an Angel Trumpet tree and WOW. A worker at the nursery kept talking about the Angel Trumpet tree until I finally put one in my car, and so glad I did! I’ve never seen one in anyone’s yard! It has 10” long trumpet flowers that are a salmon color and grows up to 9 feet. You inspired me last year to plant dahlias so I have 28 different tubers at the moment😂
I bought that colocasia Waikiki for a container arrangement this year because I loved its look. I’m happy to learn more, so thank you, I’ve been uncertain of it’s happiness so far. The container stands in the shade of the house until 2 or 3 pm and then gets blasted with sun from the west and it seems a tad crispy. I’ll keep it more moist and report back.
I just picked that same colocasia for $5 on clearance. Already felt like I had hit the jackpot, but really stoked after seeing your video! Great ideas for it.
I think I would love the grass. I am also zone 5B and looking for permanent plants. i would put those under my burning bush plants because it is shaded.
Hi from SC! This year, I made the decision to have a very tight budget for my garden and to omit some of my smaller landscape pots, only planting up my larger ones with plants i over wintered. The very first plant I purchased, because I simply could not resist, was the royal Hawaiian Waikiki ❤❤❤can’t wait for the pink to appear! (KH)
The Ivy has to be my favorite, I love that it’s variegated , and has HUMUMGUS leaves! It’s a show stopper for sure! I have experimented with grasses before, not a big fan, but I do love the chartreuse color of the little one you featured! Maybe, I need to revisit grasses, particularly in my hosta bed! Thank you for introducing some great new plants 🙌🏻
definitely going to hunt down some Carex Everillo in mass. I have so many open spots in the areas around my home and water feature that I think it will being some life into the landscape. Thx Erin!!
Very cool plants! I love to grow Colocasia start early in Florida during the winter and haul back in the spring to plant in my Zone 4 garden. The Royal Hawaiian has my attention love that feel of tropical in my northern garden.
Those containers are going be stunning! I love all the plant material you showcased and placed into the containers. If I had a wishlist it would be the Fatshedera, and I have been trying to find the muehlenbeckia for sometime now.
Hi Erin.. I also have planted the Waikiki Colocasia in two planters. Bought them as tubers so not as big as yours. I am 7b and hoping they will come through our modest winters here for next year. They are sure pretty. Really enjoy your channel.
I'm also a plant addict and just love seeing what others are going. In about 45 days I'm moving to an acre property with nothing but opportunity to create beauty and interest beyond what I've done with my existing tiny lot. I get so encouraged when I see your videos. 🙂
I’m with you there, Erin. I love different types of plants. I just need to either find someone that loves them as much as me or how to take them with me if I ever move 😂
The colocasia is definitely my favorite! I’d love to get my hands on that new variety. I’m trying out the sunfinity sunflower this year for the first time. It blooms spring to frost. Excited to see how it grows
So fun to see Samantha helping to dig. Loving the spruces too. I would love to get your take on some of the best trees for smaller yards (especially those for zone 4b. Asking for a friend 😊)
That bird of paradise can go in the bananas spot, but the bananas rules! 😂 really like the chartreuse carex but I prefer the black mondo myself. I prefer that deep black as a contrast.
My favorite is the first one! I have a small non variegated tree ivy I got at a nursery for $4 2yrs ago. I keep it as a houseplant. The growth habit is so pretty. Kind of like a peacock feather the leaves look like a fan all facing one direction . One of the easiest plants I have. So far no pest issue. Leaves perk up after I have let go a bit on water. Rarely fertilized. I have seen someone on RU-vid limb it up like a lollipop, it was cute. Can’t wait to see how yours do especially in the winter after you bring inside.
I have a lot of shade and the Everillo would look beautiful along the edge. I just planted a bunch of new dahlias but I'm in love with the Styrax americanus (American snowbell) tree I planted. It has the daintiest bell shaped flowers.
You have a bird of paradise as a houseplant and it looks that good??? Please tell us your secrets, I’ve only ever seen them half (or fully) dead as a houseplant.
Hi Erin :) I loved this video, seeing the awesome combinations you put with the featured plants. I can’t wait to see how they fill in! Fatshedera IS a fun name 🤣 That colocasia has beautiful color and is stunning. Love the tip of carex for shade pots! This year I’m trying a toad lily for the first time. Grew from seed and the 3 plants were about 2.5” tall. There was a pot massacre from squirrels and I only have one left!🤦🏻♀️ I’m also trying porcelain blue corydalis and cordyline.
Thanks for the cool video! I tried to order the “Waikiki” but it was sold out, hope to try it next year. Am intrigued by the Everillo and will definitely pick up some for my shade gardens if I see them locally. This year I am growing a red Abyssinian banana thanks to your fun videos on it! I’m in central Ohio 6a, and may try building a structure around it and stuffing it with shredded leaves to see if it can overwinter. Plant Delights Nursery says that’s possible.
Southern Living Plant Collection still has it in stock! (I just checked, they sell through Plants by Mail but the link in the description will get you there)
I would LOVE to grow all 3 of those plus the bird of paradise. I am in zone 5 as well and I have a bed that is complete shade that I need to figure out something for. The bird of paradise was my maternal grandmother's favorite plant and I have been wanting one for a very long time.
Thanks for introducing me to Everillo. I have a shady section where my hakonechloa has been performed well. I’m going to replace it with everillo in hopes that I can get a similar effect. Always love learning from you Erin!
Love that Carex! The color is so striking; would really light up any spot it’s planted in. This year my focus was on plants that were more drought tolerant since my house is going to be listed for sale mid-to-late Summer, and I didn’t want to burden a Buyer with having to water every day. A new plant for me is Euphorbia x martinii - Spurge “Ascot Rainbow.” Gorgeous colors and such a beautiful shape. I’m so looking forward to seeing how it looks in a month because the leaf structure is very colorful and lovely right now. Thanks for sharing Erin. Your Allium looked glorious swaying in the background. :)
Not sure where to ask you questions Erin, but here is one about dividing plants. I have some wooly thyme and it’s spread in one year incredibly. When I thought I’d divide it, I realized it had runners that seemed to have rooted all along the creeping stems. Are plants like this unable to be divided? I just couldn’t figure it out.
I've never heard of any of these. How exciting! This year, im trying out butterfly weed- aeclepus tuberosa. I also have a tall meadow rue - thilactrum that didn't bloom last year, but shes loaded with buds right now.!!
I love that grass. I will put that on my wish list. I don’t have anything exotic, but this is my second year trying ranunculus. Last year it was moldy corms and a couple of flowers. I decided to give them one more try. They have exploded in this cool 5b spring-summer. There are 10+ buds on each one!
Love the Royal Hawaiian, I was so pleased our nursery had it. Can't wait for it to bulk up. Sedge is cool too,, glad to know about that. I just found Manhattan Lights Lupine at an affordable price and in bloom...can't wait to try this also.
I got evergold in full sun zone 6 and it looks amazing. My trail container design this year is majesty palm, hibiscus, a dark croton and sweet potato vine. We’ll see how it does I know for sure it will be water hungry 😅
The Royal Hawaiian Waikiki colocasia is something I’ve tried to get for the past couple years. It’s hard to find, for a reasonable price, probably because it looks fabulous. I’m excited to see the progress on yours since I’m in the same zone. When yours does good I might be more willing to spend a bit more and bring it inside for the winter. Good luck! I want this plant to do great for you.
I think this is the first year it’s in semi-broad circulation. It won a bunch of awards right out of the gate so I think the few that were out there before this year were gobbled up quickly.
Another great video, Erin! I just planted a drift of armeria splendens aka sea thrift. Love the soft texture and the taller blooms compared to dianthus.
Whoa - the Fatshedera is such a great cross!! I love all of the 'Ever....' series of carex & have quite a few of them (although not Everillo - that's added to the list!) - I have to keep them in an area that the rabbits don't frequent, though, as it seems to be one of their favourites too!
That Fats is beautiful. I have a Fatsia japonica and a Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo'. Looks like a mix of the 2. Your plant combo in the big container is stunning.
Will the Carex Everillo spread and quickly as Hakonechola All Gold? I don't want to add plants that will take over a space. I appreciate all the unique plants that you find for us to integrate into our gardens.
I have close to 25 spread throughout my 8a woodland garden. The oldest is approaching 24 inches across, the rest are 18 inches or smaller. It’s very tidy and doesn’t run around at all. Just a clump. Gets a little beat up in winter, but cutting it back made it look awful. I just rake it out and it fills back out again. Looks great on a slope or walkway edge.
I love the use of the purple in your large container. I picked up a Shredded Umbrella plant and am really hoping it likes where I put it. If so my plan is to had several more next year.
You always put together the most amazing containers! I tried to divide my everillos and lost some of them. Quite bummed but I still have plenty. They do better for me in containers era than in the ground. I thing I need to enrich it a bit, I have clay here in GA.
My favorite is the carex. I'll be on the hunt for it. Last year I picked up 6 little carex that were green with a white stripe that I had in my front porch pots that have some young boxwood spheres in them to fill in the pots while the boxwoods got established. I'm in zone 6b and did keep my pots watered over the winter. None of the carex made it through the winter. They were put in towards the end of the season so maybe not established enough to make it but I was disappointed in that loss because they were so sweet with their super fine texture. Not giving up on them but just haven't seen any this spring to grab and get in early. Any tips on them overwintering in containers?
I love the Fatshedera. New to me this year is Golf Beauty Craspedia. I added it to a perennial garden for some continuous color and love it so far. Little balls of sunshine! Also new to me this year is Clematis Super Nova from Brushwood Nursery. I can't wait to see it bloom.
I also love Everillo but rabbits really gnaw it down to nubs in my garden. This year I’ve added Little Lime Punch and Bobo hydrangeas to the yard and am anxiously awaiting buds. I also planted loads of Serendipity allium over the fall in the back and am wondering why I didn’t double down in the front?! Another season, another opportunity! Zone 7b.
Great container choices! I love the fatshedera, it's beautiful. The everillo is what I think might solve my problem in my shady area. I have a large/old lilac bush and I think the everillo would look nice under planted there. Plus, I just purchased a vintage Greek goddess statue to put in that area. Can't wait!
