32:38 "They're never gonna go to RU-vid." He lied. I am so happy they did go to RU-vid. :D These are so good to have, Hankerin. I'm glad you're gracing us with this wisdom you've imparted so long ago.

I love the idea of a confidant, I've found that whenever I talked about the ideas rattling around in my noggin with my co-workers or whatever, even if they don't play dnd, I was able to develop and evolve them more than I ever could by myself. Especially if you choose one person, they can become familiar with your world and give you more and more meaningful feedback, especially if they're one to ask questions upon questions. Basically have a brain geared towards gm prep, the kind of habits DM philosophers like yourself and others try to get us into

I ended up spending time fleshing out what, exactly, magic is in my homebrew for the sole purpose of hashing out the WIS vs. INT thing lol. I ended up landing on the idea that INT magic consists of learned techniques that revolve around bending the principal elemental forces of that make up the world (think bending from Avatar) whereas WIS magic is more like inherent powers that aid in the manipulation of the physical/mental energy present in living creatures or oneself. This has led to me to make most offensive magic INT and most healing and buff/debuff magic WIS.

If I was the guy with the warlock, I'd probably go for Nyarlathotep and do a yellow robe or something. Constantly working pacts and sacrifices to earn entrance to forbidden Carcosa and gain knowledge outside the mortal lexicon.

Thanks for making the point on the confidant. I lost mine a few years ago and it was honestly a huge hit to my gaming as a whole. The only ones I have are my current gaming group. I need to press outside of my current bubble. As for Int vs Wis: We've always put it as "Intelligence says it's a Mac truck. Wisdom says get out of the way." I think I really see the difference because I've been around so many high-functioning autistics, (math, o-chem, programmers and engineers) who are unbelievably brilliant but just barely get human interaction. Think Sheldon from Big Bang, sky high Int but scraping the bottom of the barrel for Wis. (This is also why I'm glad Kelsey changed Clerics to Char instead of Wis, makes way more sense to me.) Love what you do, dude. Thanks.

I've been planning a campaign in an alternate history of Earth around the time of the first crusade (~1095CE) and finding it to be really fun and effortless - what "mythology" is more colorful and easy to pull from than human history? And then the players bring their own goals and feelings to the world too, they're anchored in a way that doesn't happen in fantasy settings

He's dropping some serious knowledge bombs here! When it comes to implicit worlds, man, it's like diving into a campaign set in a beloved movie universe. All that rich lore and epic moments already there? It saves brainpower so we can focus on role-playing like true heroes.

Bloodborne is Lovecraftian. FromSoftware’s games tend to be cryptic so it’s not blatantly obvious to someone who doesn’t know the story. 1. The common trope is to have an Academic/Scholar/Scientist _(modern reason & sensibilities)_ chasing some frontier of knowledge, unwittingly engaging with the elder gods. 2. An entire campaign can be written approaching whatever it is - That’s what makes it lovecraftian writing and cosmic horror. If you’re going to have a character based on that mythos & genre, it has to be a mystery - If your character knew the entire story, it wouldn’t be lovecraftian or cosmic horror.

RE Wisdom: My homebrew uses Brawn, Finesse, Brains, and Charm, then you mix and match with skills. The stat represents your approach to the problem while the skill represents relevant experience. Confidantes: My friend and I have what we call DM Fight Club where we brainstorm for the games we aren't playing together - ironically, it's almost entirely positive feedback, almost no fighting. Implicit Settings: Shortcuts in every sense are a good thing IF they get you where you want to go. If they lead you astray then they are by definition not shortcuts but wrong turns. Don't be afraid to use outside references. My space setting is a Cowboy Beebop/Firefly/Expanse combo - if you know those you could play right now. If you don't, 3 quick google searches, or streaming a few episodes of TV would fully immerse you.

I totally get what you're saying about implicit worlds. I usually run campaigns, but for 1-shots I totally do this. One of the most memorable sessions I ran was a classic Agatha Christie murder mystery. Another one was the Phantom of the Opera set in the Muppet Theatre. It works. Try it!

Maybe for ideas of powerful elder or outsider beings they could be metaphysical. For example everyone thinks this elder god has tentacles but it really has no body and lives in the minds of those who worship it or it takes over like a parasite but with one consciousness that spans all of the beings its inhabiting and the tentacles represent it reaching out and influencing all these minds it is occupying or sharing.

3-pages of free writing daily, totally unedited, to just let the creativity flowing is in a similar vein of thought as setting intentions to start a positive stimuli loop. Forget who or where this is from, but done for 30 min first thing in the morning leads to some very interesting results.

This was a great video. On the topic of implicit worlds (which are actually explicit, because it's obvious to the group the setting they're playing in), not only is there the advantage of cultural familiarity that saves a lot of world-building work for you, it provides the opportunity to take an established popular setting and do things differently (sometimes vastly different). It can be anything from replacing the established main cast with the PCs to having the main cast die off prematurely, have events play out, and THEN insert the PCs to deal with the new state of affairs. On the topic of intention...this is something I struggle with a lot. I often find myself powering through a project, only to run out of steam as I question my motivations and doubt myself. Being at zero is a tremendous uphill battle, especially when sights are set sky-high.

I find my RPG DM batteries get recharged getting to be a PC. My DM confidant is going to be a player in the game I am working up, so I am bit stuck right now on that process. Implicit detail does help a lot because everyone is on the same page as to what the world is like. Small purposeful Intention tip is great. Thank you for sharing this.

Hey there, I want to let you know I found what you said in this video to be inspiring, particularly about intention. I'm embarking on creative pursuits seriously for the first time, and I found myself occasionally using that concept. It seems like I'll do it a little more now. My trick for keeping the inspiration rolling has been finding three to five little projects and switching between them. This works because I always feel excited about at least one of them. A few of them have deadlines, and the others don't. Some let me dig in and wander around a little bit without worrying about outcomes, and the others are there for when I can focus in and really go after deadlines. I'm going to check out your other stuff.

I do paid games in a Studio Ghibli inspired world and can only attest to the value of the implicit world (inspired by the valley of the wind, princess mononoke and howls moving castle). If everyone agrees on the implicit world then the character backstories and vibes become much more cohesive. As a result the immersion is just a little bit better then usual.

In real life, wisdom and intelligence are definitely different things. They may be correlated, but I would venture to say the correlation is weaker than might be commonly assumed. Actually intelligence can really get in the way of humility, and it's hard to be wise if what is unable/unwilling to be humble. DCC squashes wisdom and charisma together ("personality") to make room for luck ad the sixth ability.

It's really evident how psychologically and emotionally dysfunctional we are as a society when you see prevalence of table behavior questions and the variety of answers. We've been a social animal for hundreds of thousands of years; we should know how to do this by now. And we would, if there weren't a concerted effort to hamstring us at every turn.

'we' is an awfully big generalization!
@bbblackwell
@bbblackwell Год назад
@@Runehammer1 You're right, the "we" is broad, but we're all carrying around baggage from our traumatic upbringing in this culture of manipulation, exploitation, compulsory education, governmental oppression, etc. Such an abusive environment leaves no man unscathed. That damaged psychology is expressed in all we do, and our scars can rub awkwardly with those of others, even under the best of circumstances (like a gaming get-together with the expressed purpose of cooperative fun and leisure).

@@rynowatcher I admit it is amusing and ironic to hear the statement that "it will never be on RU-vid" as we listen to this on RU-vid, but it is not cool to imply that Hank is a disingenuous liar by posting this on RU-vid. Hank is such a genuine caring person; this is clear to anyone who engages in his content. He creatively bares his soul to us with tales of his journeys and lessons learned (both in gaming and in life). I am grateful that he has decided to share these podcasts (from years ago) with the greater community here on RU-vid. Stop being so toxically hypercritical, judgmental, and selfish.
@rynowatcher
@rynowatcher 8 месяцев назад
@@GenuineMattyC I am not implying anything; I am pointing out he did lie. I felt I was very direct about it. You can think whatever you want about him personally, but you cannot say he was being truthful in this regard. This was the video that made up my mind to quit watching Hank's videos and buying his books because it became appearant he did not care what he said or if it was honest. Honestly, the quality of the writing and game design was dropping in further publications (art was good line work and he has really clean layouts; I will give him that). I am not unfair, but I am also not toxicly positive; lie and I quit listening. Not really interested in debating the point as I am no longer a part of this community and happier for it. I had not thought about him since he reposted this video, and the fact it is still up means he still does not care; so why should I?
