Before Spring ends and summer begins lawn owners all over the place need to do three very important things.
In this video I helped my friend Robby over on my project lawn (his lawn) get all three tasks done while taking a bit of extra time to explain what variations I'm doing in my own lawn this year.
Products used or referenced in this video include:
► Scott's GrubEx (Chloratraniliprole):
www.amazon.com...
This is best applied in May and very early June
► LawnBox's Grub Out (BT) has been discontinued since I made this video. A nearly identical alternative would be this product called GubGONE that uses the same bacterial BT strain: www.amazon.com...
This is best applied in late June through Mid July.
► Ike's Lawn Grub Control (Imidacloprid):
turfmech.link/...
This is best applied in mid-June through early July and is best for very bad grub problems.
► LawnBox's Grass Genie:

I tried lawnbox for my 17-18000 sq ft lawn. I was under the impression that it was $230 for the year. But it was $230 per shipment. Which came to $1400 for 6 shipment. True Green was $900 for the year.

I looked into that Lawnbox stuff. It does half a normal yard (2500sq ft) for double the cost. Just isn't worth it with all the other products out there.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 года назад
Yeah, it's much more expensive. In April we put down Scott's Naturalls 11-2-2 which was much more affordable but for this one I wanted a bit more K without having to apply an extra dose of SOP...also we got a touch of humic acid mixed in...also were apply to such a small area that the cost was negligible. Natural stuff is always cost prohibitive though for many peolle so I understand.

Would it be worth it to manually aerate the bald spots then add the fertilizer?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 года назад
I don't think so. Pre-emergent is down so that would invite more weeds i think. Instead watering of lawn will put the nutrients into the bare spots and hopefully some of the spreading grasses will chase it there. In 75 days we'll topdress and mildly level and may (or may not) dig some soil building ingredients into those spots before seeding. Gotta wait for the PE to wear off before dropping seed, probably around Sept 1.

Hey Brian, I applied Aceleprn which controls grubs as well. I had army worms last season so got this app down last week. I did my Spring fert ( slow release) app on 5/15. Am I safe to do summer app mid June? I’ll be applying a 7-0-20 with 3% iron fert. I’m still trying to follow your summer lawn watering tips and not over water my tall fescue/kbg. I got the ten pack 1.5" Rain Gauge/Sprinkler outdoor measuring cups off Amazon and placed them throughout my lawn. I have to run my irrigation for at least three days per week at 50 min per zone to get the 1.5-2” water. It seems like the tall fescue/kbg requires a lot more water in warmer temps. It has been a little dry here in Upstate but some rain expected this evening. My lawn is looking healthy. I do have one area that has patchy areas of slight lime green color so watching carefully. Wondering if it’s from too much forced growth or too much water. Do sandy soil require more water? Thanks for another informative video!

@juzoli 2 года назад
Why do you need 2” a week? 1 should be plenty enough. Also do you want lush green fast growing lawn all summer, or just keep it green without going into dormancy?

How do we go about finding out if we have a grub problem ?
@aliaskink

You'll have spots of what looks like brown patch but the difference is you can peel back your turf because the grubs ate all the roots.

@@TurfMechanic No worries at all, I'm sure having people throw those types of comments out there is at least a little annoying so I typically avoid being 'that guy' - but with the video being a fresh upload I wanted to mention it in case it was something that you would want to fix. Gotta keep family as your priority, think everybody understands and appreciates that. Thanks for all the great content you put out!

I thought Grubex was needed to go down end of April/beginning of May because of how insoluble the active is compared to Imidacloprid
@aliaskink
@aliaskink 2 года назад
Agreed. Grubex goes down earlier than Imidacloprid.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 года назад
Yes the ingredient in there needs to be down early. I'm comfortable with the date range of late April through early june. We may miss some of the easiest grubs applying on June 6 but that's OK. I don't think a full eradication of grubs is the goal. Some grubs are healthy in a lawn we just don't want too many of them. Same reason I use the bt product, ill never get them all but I will prevent infestations.

@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 года назад
Perhaps but I don't want to rip into it just before summer since we have so much bare dirt and this spots. We're also planning on doing a smallish topdressing/leveling in late August just before overseed.
