3-Day Camping Adventure: Lean-To Shelter Living on the Tuscarora Trail

3 days of Backpacking and Hammock Camping on Virginia’s Tuscarora Trail.
For this backpacking trip, I decided to head down to the border of West Virginia and Virginia to check out a pretty cool mountaintop lean-to shelter and do a little airplane scavenger hunt in-between the occasional rain showers that always tend to follow me around. On day one I would hike up to the ridge using the Tuscarora Trail, day two I would base camp and explore, and on day three I would hike back out via a different set of trails to complete the loop.
My options for shelter would be to either use the Gerhard Shelter lean-to if I had the place to myself, or a lightweight tarp and minimalist hammock if I decided to wander out further into the woods and camp near the search area and nearby spring.
My April temperature range for this trip was between 40° and 75°. This allowed me to get my backpack’s base weight down to around 10 lbs, while still including my puffy jacket and ultralight rain jacket for supplemental warmth at camp if needed.
The details of the aviation accident site that I was looking for can be found here. It was a small Cessna 150J that went down due to engine power loss and fortunately their were only minimal injuries to one of the two passengers. I’ve never read any reports of anyone actually finding or visiting this site, so I really had no idea if there would be anything to be found. But hey, it was a good excuse to get out into the woods, so I grabbed my pack and headed out for some adventure…

Every time you do one of those walking away shots, I want to yell, "Hey! You forgot your camera!" I've been following you for a long time, and I don't think I've ever commented. Thank you for all your work, and imagination over the years. You've maintained a consistent quality, and a very nice consistent style. It's always a pleasure to watch another exploration.

I think the same thing. Thanks, for the vids. I know it's gotta take a lot to walk past the camera and come back to get it, to get the shots. Great work. Can't imagine the time for editing.

I agree with Victor and Russell, it is always exciting to watch your videos. They are exciting, educational for those of us that are novice to backpacking trips. No matter the challenge, it is always a relief when we all yell ~ Yay! It's cheeseburger time! 😂 as you head safely into your vehicle. 😎

I knew right where you were as soon as I saw the parking space !! Those are my stomping grounds !!! Have you ever been on the old mail path? I think you have but can't remember. That one is so much fun. I remember your bucktail trail/half-moon video. Did you know across from the parking lot of bucktail, on the long mountain trail about 1/4 mile is the best camp site in those parts ? There's a gorgeous one at the top of the bread road, too. I love, love great north mountain. Especially the quiet trails !!!

I tally only about 12 miles total mileage on this tour Sean.. are you slowing down? age catching up? 🤣🤣 quite honestly, the trail commraderie , scenery , fire pit & shelter made me long 4the best parts of hiking after a 4+ year hiatus... but the 'chores' , long driving hours, rain & trail food did not! So age must be catching up w/me in my 60's !! God Bless & Happy Hiking all !! What the # 4the hotel.again?🤣🤣🤣✌️

Awsome can't wait to see more Shawn. I need a good time out from work. Got some new gear that needs tested in back yard first. You da man! Weather sure has dried up here in NE Ohio. We had two super hot days and it just scorched the vegetation. Cooked the life right out of the ground in June. I went out to one of my pastures and it was like a micro burst of heat. Could not believe the experience. Very strange. Tell family I say hello. Jim

Shawn, a Cessna 150J has an empty weight of a touch over 1000 lbs. Easy enough to unbolt pieces parts and haul it down the mountain with a few folks. Insurance company may have done that just for salvage purposes. Nice trip, even if you didn’t find the aircraft.
