Big trout, clear water and sight fishing!! This was our best fly fishing trip into New Zealand's pristine backcountry rivers. It was all sight fishing to big trout in gin-clear water. Challenging but very rewarding fishing. What a stunning place.

The drone footage is all old footage from a trip a few years ago with Lewis and was filmed with the permission of East Taupo Lands and Helisika. We did not take a drone this time.

Enjoyable watch that. It's great to see you and Pawel embark on a journey like that in pristine water. Along way from civilization, how good is that. Some lovely rainbows caught and brown. Some spooky fish also, which is no surprise in water like that. A lot of it is in the drift. Some pools can be tricky to get the ideal drift

Yeah it's a great spot, we got lucky no-one else was in there too as it's relatively well-known and the hut is always busy with trampers and hunters.

Excellent Johan, great that you and Pawel were able to make a back country trip come together, I imagine that river has seen a lot of traffic over summer as so much of the country has been blown out.
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Год назад
Thanks Neil, it was great to make it out there. I think it always sees a fair bit of traffic and certainly even more this year so the fish are well versed in fly fishing by this late in the season. Always a fun challenge though and I think we did reasonably well. Very enjoyable.

Hi Johan, beautiful river but running a bit shallow so obviously the fish are skittish. Accommodation looks good and beats having to carry all that extra gear! You two make a good hunting pair. Cheers mate. Harera
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Год назад
I'm not too familiar with the normal levels in there but it did seem lower than the last time I was in there with Lewis. I also think it gets a lot of pressure so the fish know flies very well. Still a great place and I much prefer staying in a hut and not having to fish with packs on! Tight lines.

The longest walk I've ever done to get to a fishing spot is around 40 minutes. I plan on a few long hikes to lakes this year . Seems to be worth it. Better quality fish
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Год назад
It's worth it if you find the right spot. I have also walked a long way for no or very few fish. But the experience is pretty cool deep in the backcountry with or without fish. Give it a go and hope you have a great trip.

Glad you enjoyed. It's a great spot but I don't share location details online unfortunately. A bit of research should get you a bunch of good backcountry spots. Looking and the DOC website with maps of their tracks and armed with some river names you will soon find some great spots.

Love the video! What a cool adventure. The dead fall on trail definitely adds to the excitement! Curious what each of you were using for rod, line, etc? Thanks for sharing! 🎉
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Год назад
Thanks so much, great to hear you enjoyed it. We were both using 9' 5wt rods. I had a 4 piece Primal Bold and he had a 6 piece Epic. It's a custom built blank from a kit as far as I am aware. We were both using floating lines and 12 ft tapered leaders plus tippet to the dry. I was using an Airflo Universal Taper with ridge 2.0 and I think he was using an SA smooth infinity amplitude. Let me know if you need any more details. Tight lines.

Amazing videos....are there any small fish in NZ? Haha, I'm from the east coast in America.
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Год назад
Haha yeah we do have some small ones but places like this we target the big ones by sight fishing so that eliminates the small ones even more. We are very lucky with the average size of the trout we have

nice video mate. Its a good spot in there, you see many other anglers ?
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Год назад
Thanks mate, yeah it's a great spot but it does get busy as it's a relatively easy 3.5 to 4.5hr walk. I've only been in twice and been lucky not to have any othet anglers but the hut gets busy. On the way out a guide stopped to chat to us asking how the fishing was because he was going to fly clients in there. Lots of choppers all day so could easily get jumped by a guide with clients or have a group fly in. It's a risk on public land. Not a lot of water for more than one group of anglers. If you get lucky like we did you get the water to yourself. Weekdays are certainly a safer bet not over a weekend like we did.
@MrLou948
@MrLou948 10 месяцев назад
Great video! What dries were you using? Cicadas or something smaller? Also…I won’t use names but have you been to the “next” hut that’s about another 3.5hr hike after this one? I’m thinking of heading there late Jan but I’m worried about too little time to do both areas. Thanks!
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing 10 месяцев назад
Thanks, glad you liked it. I haven't been to the next hut so I'm not sure if it is worth it. We used parachute adams pretty much exclusively in late January. There weren't many cicadas around and we found the fish spooked on the bigger flies landing. I think it is just a combination of low water and pressure. It's a popular area. Enjoy. It's a stunning spot.

@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Год назад
Thanks very much. I've only fished it twice and both times it was in February. Our first trip was much tougher. I'm told early season is better but I imagine you risk running into other anglers a lot more. Not a lot of water for two or more lots of anglers to share.
@danifoote7883
@danifoote7883 Год назад
Yer that's the risk aye, go later with less pressure but spooky fish or earlier, we're weighing up the odds for next season. What tippet were you using? Cheers!
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing

@Dani Foote 4x added to a 12-foot 3x tapered leader. Total about 15 to 17 ft.

Hey mate, thanks for the idea. I haven't made that yet but I am planning to make some more videos like that in the next few months so keep an eye out. In the mean time I have a big trip coming up in April for bonefish and hopefully one or two more trout trips before then. After that I plan to do a bunch of breakdowns of gear and how to plan trips like these etc. Let me know if there is anything else you would like me to include.

I'm glad that you've already thought of such a kind of video :) I would like to be able to look into your backpack what you have with you on the water, which camera you use, which wadingsocks you use which pants you have that dry quickly, things that make fishing on the water easier and more comfortable like thermopants for wetwading:)
@robtryall9036
@robtryall9036 Год назад
what wading pants / boots?
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Год назад
I'm using some old Columbia quickdry pants and Simms Flyweight Access boots. Not sure what Pawel was using. He mentioned his pants but I honestly can't remember. His boots were probably his old Traper ones.
