That bigger anterled stag is a young one, he has got big lone pedicles. He will be massive in 2,3 years. Top notch hunting ethics. The one you shot plus a couple of those other stags will never be a decent head. Well done, thanks for the excellent vid.

Sorry but I had to put on the subtitles, Lol :-))... oh, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching you, and will continue to watch your videos. Love your visuals of tramping, tracking, running commentaries, the best parts for me is all that and especially your dives, fishing and catch'n'cook-ups. The good and the bad experiences are awesome to watch and you share it all in its fairly raw form with your audience (us). Impressive and then I saw an episode with dad & mum and could see that maybe they taught you/ you cook the same.. cos dad and mum seem to cook the fish up the same... Neat video, that stag was a year or two from full potential. Nice one for leaving him. Bit of a bugger about the spoilt meat, use the river to cool meat down. Use dry bags to keep water out, then cool in the river. weigh it down with rocks. It will float away otherwise. If it isn't hot overnight, I will get meat out of the river and let it set.
Thanks mate 👌 Cheers for the tips, that's exactly what I did on my last hunt, took some nice new thick plastic bags up and butchered the spiker into them, then straight into the river weighted down. No river near the hut but it was fine overnight and we froze it about 20 hours later, never making that mistake again!
Really well put together video again, you make it look easy! Love your positive attitude and willingness to learn from not quite getting it all right. You obviously care about utilizing the animals you harvest and have learned what not to do during this trip. Lots of others will learn from your video too. Taking up the mincer is bloody harious!
Your right on length and age on the stags you left they need at least 2 or 3 years. Just watch as the needed a bit more time to be hard. Likely wouldn't be hard until very Feb. That stag you took was the right call if you wanted meat as it doesnt remove a potential trophy but your still got yourself as much meat as you could carry. Good stuff.
Really enjoy your videos. Whenever I get back to the car with meat I stop at the first shop and buy ice and pack it around the meat. Yes and always try and cool it thoroughly prior.

Great video. Great hunting. Good that you left that big stag for its antlers to harden. During summer heat we would place our meat in a plastic bag and sink it into a stream, put a rock on top to keep it in place. As good as a fridge. And we would sometimes gut the deer then simply sink the whole, unskinned carcass into a stream, with a big rock in the chest cavity to weigh it down. Keeps it cool and good for days and days, but where water is in contact with the raw meat it washes out the blood and makes that surface meat look somewhat bleached, but no damage is done otherwise. Hunting is very much about learning, and the more you hunt, the more new tricks to do with hunting you learn.

Awesome video. To help my meat set better I use two cloth bags. Whenever I'm not moving I pull the meat out of my pack and let the cloth bags cool. I find that letting them breath helps hugely and the butchers I use have commented that I bring in really good condition meat. If you don't want your pack getting bloody just put the clothes bags in the plastic one when packing it out.
Cracking video, the big stag looks about 4 years old. He will be at his best from 6-9 years old. At 5 year old he will show some good length and will be a hard to deer to pass on, but if given 2 or 3 years he will be a 300 douglas plus stag id say. You shot a great stag from the group id say, another 4 year old deer just with far weaker genetics for antler. Wicked footage, two cracking chamy bucks too

Awesome video bro... yeah is always good to let meat cool right down before putting in ya pack ..try an avoid plastic bags ..muzzling/ mutton cloth is Abit better I find .. lesson learned is a lesson gained.. chur bro
Nice work bro! Yeah agree with other comments about those stags being young. Also at that stage of velvet they way too soft to take as a trophy. Bummer about the meat!! I never put meat into plastic bags until its lost most of its heat. Even in reasonably warm weather you'll find if you have a bit of a breeze the meat will cool quite nicely, just gotta wave the flies off for a bit!! Keep up the good honest hunting!!

I put it straight in bags cos it's a little difficult to wave the (hordes of) flies away while still butchering, but I've learned my lesson! Cheers bro 👌
Great hunt. I hunt this area a bit when I shear at the farm beside where you parked. animal numbers are starting to get up a bit in there now. sad to hear about the meat. I always carry breathable bags or cotton pillow cases for the meat to put it in to cool out of the pack and keep the flies off. plastic bags are terrible for making meat go bad really quickly if its not kept cold.

Another great installment Tasman. Most entertaining. How much does your pack weigh on the way in with all that great food? Bit of a shame about the meat, but it is always a dilemma when out in the heat and really tricky if you can't protect it from the blowflies.
Thanks Paul! Usually between 15-30kg on the way in, depending on what ridiculous things I take and trip length 😂. Yeah I ballsed that one up, but I've got some nice thick bags which I can submerge in the river now, much better!

Balloons in the US and now crates in the wilds of NZ. Whatever next. How could you not walk over to them! That Matagouri looks so nasty. How did you avoid ending up being covered in blood. I googled it and was surprised that it was native, semi useful and possum food. It looks even worse than gorse. Hikers and hunters live in different times zones when it comes to hut life. On night 2 those hikers wouldn’t have enjoyed the 11pm arrival. Nice of you to stay outside and try to keep the noise down. I’m sure they would have been talking about you the next day, but oh how they’d regret not staying on after seeing that delicious, toasted sandwich. That looked epic. Seems like you cover a lot of ground to get around to the correct wind side, but then again maybe the distances look bigger on film than they actually are. When you say the distance, it doesn’t seem that far. The Chamois were good looking animals, and the stags were amazing. The antlers were magnificent to watch. Regal-like with their heads held high running away. But the hills were so barren it is amazing they support so many animals. Were you sucking flax flowers? And I thought the GNAWWW value was solely proximity to the hut 😉 Was that a 2 sec advertorial for platypus? They are the best! And did you see the video posted last week by Keeping It Wild? Stag testicles? You game?
Yeah shoulda walked over to those crates, buuuut I couldn't be bothered 😂. Matagouri is a bastard, but skin grows back hahaha....haha? The distances aren't crazy, like 1.2km on the flat would be easy peasy, but everything just takes so much longer on the hills, was probably at least a couple hours in that deer stalk. Yeah amazing animals, I guess they roam around a bit following the best feed. Yep, the flax nectar is a nice treat 😋. The full GNAW value equation is important, I must say succulence far outweighs trophy size by a decent margin on most hunts 😂. We may have to grow our following a bit more before a platypus sponsorship rolls in 🤣 great bottles tho! Re stag testicles, awww hell no! The first night when you said they where in bed bed and you politely had dinner outside I was expecting for them to get up early and not show the same politeness. Then it happened. Good on you tho
There were crazy number of flies so I wasn't keen to do that at the time, definitely should've spread it out when I got back to the hut that evening though, but I was pretty knackered. Cheers mate
Awesome video👍 what condition was the road leading in like? Would you need a kitted out 4wd to drive it or would any old ute go just fine? I suppose you walked in from where your car was parked for a reason
Cheers Jack! Its pretty gnarly tbh, just a little patch near the start, I'd say kitted out (defs beyond Corollatruck's capabilities anyway 🤣). In any case I'm not sure if you can access the block via 4x4 on that particular spot, there's other access points though which may be in better nick.
