3 Days SOLO Survival in Winter as a Traditional Australian Bushman

In this video I head up to the Australian mountains in the Victorian High Country during winter to test myself with a 3 day solo survival challenge. I bring out limited food and no tent or modern sleeping bag for this journey. With freezing conditions I have to stay warm with only a sheepskin bedroll and woollen blanket.
I manage to find a cave to spend the 3 days in and try and practice my survival skills.

Yeah not knocking this bloke but did 3-4 day trips with a fry pan, large tray of snags and a creek with yabbies in it for fun back in the day. Winter, Frenches Forrest and a thin tent each. A cave would been damn luxury. Once slept in the car cause someone (AH) left a can of beans (another luxury) in the fire and wrecked my tent. 2 nights in the vinyl seats of a HK Monaro. Trust me tent was better but a cave.....whaoh hoo!

When you said it's the dirtiest you've ever been, it reminded me of one experience while I was in the army. We had to dig fighting pits with over-head cover and lived in them for two weeks. The only day it didn't pour down was the day we dug the hole. My wife wouldn't even let me in the house, I had to strip off in the back yard and hose myself down. Really makes you respect the guys from WW1 who lived in stinking mud for months on end.

This is so refreshing to see. I have been trying to find some good winter survival / Bushcraft vids to watch. It almost is not worth me watching those RU-vidrs who bring their completely free donated tents, Titanium indoor wood heaters and enough food including waygu steak, bacon and eggs and wraps etc including all the condiments along. It's good to see a down to earth fellow Aussie just doing the hard yacker as we do here. Great vid! Enjoy the content.

EDIT for my Fanenhight friends, Australia winters can go from -1 degrees celcius up to alot lower in the high snow mountains, but then it can get into the 35-48 degrees celcius also. It is winter here, but it was 38 degrees celcius in Darwin 2 days ago. Where I live in melbourne, it has been an average of -2 to + 6 degrees celcius. I have had to use my heater alot, I am a winter person, but it has been very cold where I am living atm. No insulation in the walls.
@TheBeardedBushranger
@TheBeardedBushranger 2 месяца назад
Thanks for watching mate. Yeah and the thing about Victoria is 1. The homes in Melbourne are notoriously known as some of the coldest in the world (based to insulation and design) 2. Our snow often has a higher risk of hypoterhmia, because it sits at that 0.c to 1.c temps, the snow gets wet and mushy, which means you are more likely to get soaked, which means being wet in the cold .. higher risk of hypothermia
@Peakoilcompany

Thanks for the mention Luke, you tough bugga. I need to get a hurry on, and get you a waxed canvas poncho with a thick wool blanket to match it. They would top that sheepskin nicely. I would carry a feather down quilt too.. but I'm not as hearty as you. Then a chair framepack to carry it. A lovely valley you scored there. That cave is really nice. I wonder if hot rocks would be possible. Big fire, then pull the rocks and place them close to you. That wind shot just before you caught the blackfish was a beauty. Cut sandwiches at the end would've been fun. Love what you're doing.

haha yeah I've had a few comments about the food .. I think some fruit and sandwiches might of been a bit healthier .. mind you I couldn't stomach much of it cause I think my tummy shrunk a bit. Sheepskin worked great! I've been converted to sheepskin over down sleepingbags perhaps haha

Those Red Rock chips aren't cheap mate. I'm from Melbourne and i've been freezing living inside a modern house, can't imagine the night out there. Even at work, as a machine operator, I'm wearing a long sleeve top, a work shirt, a work jimper and a work puffy jacket just because the factory's been so cold. I appreciate that you were observing the rules regarding state and national parks but given a real survival situation, i wouldn't give two hoots what season it was and what i could and couldn't forage for. Great vid mate 👍
@TheBeardedBushranger

Gday mate. Thanks so much for that! Should help me buy the next pack for the next trip haha. It does get cold here in Vicco .. I know the canadians and europeons like to make fun at us for thinking it's cold .. but there is something about cold drizzly grey melbourne that still takes a bit to get used to. Yeah I thnk the foraging laws in national parks are ridiculous to be honest. How many people are actually going out and eating bush tucker. And yeah in a real survival situation I'd have eaten that little fish as well. Thanks again for watching and your donation .. I'll have a snow vid coming out soon as well (which was extra cold haha)

Thats awesome mate! You did well. Must have been cold. Interesting how low your blood glucose levels must have got with no food. When I was a teenager we used to fish for trout in NZ in the back country with worms. Was deadly. Mind you we used rods. You tore into those snacks in the car! Keep up the great work! 🇦🇺 🇳🇿

Cheers mate! I won't lie, on the second night I realized I had 1 satche of rehydration powder (glucose) and I decided to drink that (mixes with 300 ml of water) ... more for the bordedom haha I usually always catch trout on a worm on these rivers, but they were having none of it this trip .. I reckon the fact that it was slowing down might have something to do with it.

Try fishing without the sinker ... don't need to cast far, just where you can see the fish. With a bit of bait, a few meters in front is all you need. Works every time.

Keeping a sewing needle and coarse thread in your kit is a good EDC for burnt socks 🧦The inner stands of Paracord are perfect. I've even used fishing line before 👍 Carp seem to like bread or dough, if you had any oats or flour that would work. Are you wearing thermals ? Because denim is terrible for retaining warmth... Oh, one other thing I've found is really awesome is Voost Effervescent Energy Tablets. They turn water into Gatorade. Amazon Au have a 20pk of them for about $6. Its a great supplement for hiking and they take up no space. Same story for Woolies $3 Chai Latte sachets, bloody awesome hot or cold !! (you'll need powdered milk tho')👍

Spent quite a bit a few nights in the Vic mountains with a hound crew. Typically give ourselves more gear than you permitted yourself, and bigger fires. Couple of dogs in the swag is very warming on cold nights, if you’re in an area that permits it. Surprising how much warmth even a little dog gives off. My record is three. I was warm….. could hardly breathe, but deffo warm. Coldest night I can recall was up the Mitta in State Forest. Water spilled on the tray of the ute while making a morning brew, froze instantly and was still there at 2 in the arvo. Good on you for pushing your limits. We were there for different reasons, both good. Cheers…
@TheBeardedBushranger
@TheBeardedBushranger 2 месяца назад
Yeah I've heard of the saying of a 'three dog night'. Most state forest you can bring dogs in, I got a kelpie and a border collie .. I'd like to take them out more. THough our Vic government wants to turn our state forests into national park which would take away our rights to bring dogs out. Hopefully it doesn't happen.
