I'll be blunt. Cartnoon Network knew that this wouldn't appeal to kids at the time. They knew that a lot of young people would miss the musical references and adults wouldn't appreciate the sexual references (they aren't exactly subtle). HOWEVER, Adult Swim could and should pick this up and get a good following. I honestly think this cartoon deserves a second chance, and a more modern audience would much better recieve this than that when it was released.
@@oscarthagrouch Wait till you find out how many kid's cartoons have innuendo in them. It's not out of the ordinary. It's for parents who watch stuff with kids to laugh at when it flies over kid's heads.
@@oscarthagrouch This was from a segment that aired all kinds of pilot episodes, and much like other shows, no one actually gave a crap if the kids wouldn't get it.
@@oscarthagroucha lot of kids’ cartoons have some form of innuendo, usually for parents bc they might find it funny while kids either won’t understand or will find it funny without knowing there’s another meaning.
I think it might be 8 pm they woke up. It was night by the time they got to the club. Which makes sense if your job needs you to be up all night long and you don't get to sleep till 12 noon
This is a fantastic cartoon, can't believe CN dismissed this back in the day. I love the varied character designs, the surrealistic approach, and the music.
It needed to be a smidge more absurdist in its humor. It wasn’t really that funny to me. It also wasn’t completely endearing either, just kind of chill.
I could see it working as a show on modern Adult Swim, like something they get with the first season originally made intended for Cartoon Network that they know won't find an audience with kids.
I like how each of them kind of represents a different era and genre, in both how they look and act Sly- 70s funk/disco Stavros- 80s synth Loubie- 90s rap/hip hop it really helps make them unique and would make for some good opportunities to explore the different genres, much like Class of 3000, except even more focused specifically on catchy beats and making you dance
Boy this show really should've been aired. There is so much potential to have lots of fun and character development in every episode, plus a chance for them to play different forms of music every episode. Could've have lots of memorable songs, unlike that show Grojband.
@Casey Pace They haven't cared about music for like over a decade. MTV would rather bash white people and glorify the liberal agenda even though it's not really working.
Atleast they delivered strongly on their music and the party did get exciting. I was worried they were going to mess it all up. This was pretty fun and i like their personalities. The whole frankenstein bit with the shower was hilarious. The small one really gives me Parappa vibes with his dreams and visions.
This cartoon is a lot of fun, and there's a lot of things about it that appeal to me; thr characters, the animation, the humor, it all blends well. HOWEVER, this definitely works better as just a short rather than a full show. It's difficult for me to picture it as a full length show or something that could work for more than a few episodes.
Was going to post the same, it's an excellent animation, and the artists definitely have a big repertoire of visual gags, but the setting itself is very limited. Any series involving them would either have to be too off-topic (defeating the point) or more of the same.
why? as a writer i think this is a great premise for a series. It should be episodic with an over arcing plot about their music careers and personal life. Youd have time to flesh out the world, the cast and the side casts characterization.
@@CommieApe Can you give us a 3-line idea for 3 episodes with these characters that don't involve detracting from music and instead focusing on how they've got an electricity bill due because Dog 2 forgot to pay it and now they're involved in a million different things that don't capitalize on the show's main selling point of groovy music? Or how a girlfriend dumped germandog because he has stinky feet and now he can't write songs anymore, so they spend the whole episode trying to win the girl back over. Because that's the direction I'd imagine the series would take, would like to see more options where you can't simply replace the 3 Dogs with any other cartoon crew.
With how great Phineas and Ferb did, I could easily see this show being picked up. Paul Rudish’s art style has vastly improved (not to say this pilot is ugly, far from it), so seeing this with updated visuals would be great! Maybe each episode could have them doing odd jobs to fund their band and ending each episode with a new song. I wouldn’t even mind if they stuck to one genre, like Jem and the Holograms. And with Daft Punk’s retirement and rap being the dominant genre, they might even be able to stand out and actually get on the Billboard 100!
As a gigging musician, this is pretty accurate for the type of group this is. The keyboardist is super particular about his craft, the drummer is slightly chaotic and ends up carrying more than a fair share of the gear without help, and the bassist is blissfully unaware of his surroundings and zonked out of his mind. ...until it's time to play. Then we kick some ass! Everyone is dancing and having fun. Really would love to see more of this, not sure how old this short is but if there was any hint at a revival/continuation I'd be all for it.
Top 3 reasons this should be a series 1. The animation is so damn inviting, I think as a somewhat tribute to the 90's cartoons Dexter's lab for example. 2. The main three characters in both design and personality seem impressive, they have the potential to have an ed edd and eddy vibe bouncing off each other. 3. The music of this show is very good, sounds like the 70's, the perfect music to groove out to. in conclusion as a lover of animation this really was so refreshing to see nowadays
Yeah it could go for some retooling in a few areas, such as making it clear what kind storytelling they want go for with their pitch and work on the humor a bit more. Another factor that may have led to being unsuccessful is that maybe having a music oriented show could be too expensive and you'd have to make a lot of songs for each episode. Too bad, because it seems like such a simple and fun idea.
@@Idamensional Sorry, I meant establishing the story itself a bit more, such as further fleshing out who these characters are and their main goals. I know it's just a pilot, but it felt more like a 2nd episode rather than a full first. This could just be me, but I can see this being the kind of story about a small group of musicians that want to make it big that get into wacky music-related adventures with a groovy soundtrack.
@Yura Dopted never fucking give up, hell phineas and ferb had concepts dating back to the 90s, the NINETIES. and it took around 10 years for it to finally become a show. dont ever give up when pitching your show. because it may one day become a reality
People saying this feels dated: Music from long gone eras has some serious potential. I’ve been collecting lps for years now and have always been fascinated with music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, (and on). What I’m trying to say is: People often misjudge those times, especially 60s and 70s, because the teenagers of those times are now elderly, or at least grown up. Imo those days also had their own flair. I really like the colorful shirts, bellbottom jeans and long hair, from the 60s, 70s and the futuristic, sometimes sporty, sometimes fancy clothes from the 80s. Long story short: I’m just glad to see that in a cartoon and i just love the vibe of this.
This is right up my alley. but to be honest, if this was picked up by CN, I'd imagine that there'll be these "do you remember 3 Dog Band?" or "3 Dog Band the forgotten cancelled CN show" type of videos on RU-vid talking about how it got canceled due to the lack of viewership.
I can see why it wouldn't have worked on Cartoon Network back then but it could really work now, or it could work on Netflix (assuming that Netflix wouldn't cancel it after one season)
One of my favorite tropes in character design is very sharp angular character versus very rounded smooth character. Just the contrast but the ability to work together is just 😙👌. I think I just like designs in general with really strong shape language.
it was when CN lost interested in animated shows in that time i think it was back in the dark era they had when they tried live action and they hired a nickelodeon president and they cancelled any animated production till regular show and the other show started again
@@forkq5720 Nope you're talking about the mid 2000's this pilot came out around the time where the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" and Code Name Kids next Door" were on the air. Kids just weren't interested in a musical based show when they had those two shows I mentioned to watch, were loved by many. So my point is this show's potential was overshadowed by vastly more popular and successful shows.
@@user-xs5bl9dy6d the pilot is from 2010 go and do your own research check imdb or wikipedia or idk, btw this pilot is fully digital just look with ur monitor is super clean mid 00s cartoons were still doing in paper and digital and if you dont know what im talking about just check the resolution was maded in a computer with a tablet
These dogs are groovy. The animation is awesome I love the three dogs designs and the exaggerated classic cartoon stuff. Stuff appearing out of thin air, the squash and stretch of the characters it’s all very nice. Too bad it didn’t become an actual show. :/ oh well at least the pilots still cool
This was extremely charming. My favorite character is rhe German dog. I think that the concept needed some refining but the aesthetics are just dripping with sleekness. Would have been very cool on Cartoon Network.
I'd honestly love if this was a series. This used to be a special interest of mine last year. Now that I love 80s synth music, this show would make me happy if it aired.
I REALLY wish CN would pick this back up. It was such a fascinating premise, with very nice animation. I loved it as a child, and revisiting it, I still love it.
I don't know how I've never seen this until now but this was mesmerizing. Definitely would have watched this as a kid. I remember when Class of 3000 came out I didn't miss an episode. The design of this show is so cool.
god damn internet changed , all i found 5 years ago about this was 3 dog nights instead of more content about the show it's pretty nice to see other people care about this
I actually wish this was aired, in general the music is amazing and the art style is almost nostalgic to me reminding me of courage and like cat dog which stopped airing around that time I suppose, I know it would have been up there with them for certain. I love the flow of the art, the story in general is choppy and the composition for it is a lil eh. But if they worked on it further in a series I know they would have made it work. Such a missed opportunity, I would have definitely watched this as a kid.
Damn this had a ton of potential! Sucks that we don’t live in a timeline where this got a couple of seasons If this was the pilot just imagine how good it would be with an actual budget
This could easily be an awesome show for 2022. Just have the plot be three old school musicians trying to compete against modern music by wanting to reintroduce the soul to music.
I look back at what we could have had and then look at what we got and question what the hell went through today's creators minds. I would have preferred this to half the shows that air today!
Holy moely, this needs to be a show! It would give me reason to watch more TV again! BTW, the small dog looks like Parappa a little bit, with the hat and all.
