I think tracing is cheating only if you lie and say you drew it from scratch. I use a light box to pencil in outlines and facial features when it's a portrait. It's just faster. I can draw well enough to do it without utilizing a light box or tracing paper, but why do I want to spend the time? Tracing isn't going to make your painting more vibrant and accomplished. Drawing and painting are two entirely different skills.
The absolute best way to trace a complex photo on watercolor paper is with a video projector. They used to be pricey but now the tiny portable led-based ones are as cheap as an entry level tablet. You can mount them on some sort of stand then mirror your phone's screen or hook it up to a PC and voilà.
I've been using the window trick for years. Just have to make sure there's no condensation on the inside. And a bit of masking tape holds the paper in place.
Another way is to use tracing paper Next YOU out line the picture with dark Heavy lead pencil lines Turn it over And DRAW OVER THE PICTURES LINES on the back side PRESS HARD, IT WILL TRANSFER THE PICTURE TO YOUR PAPER👍
Using graphite paper is another way, It wont repel the watercolor and will disappear when water is applied! carbon paper will repel water and leave a line!
I can’t get the link to work. And I went directly to the website. It said put in your email and you will receive it but after putting in my email I didn’t receive it. ☹️ it says something has gone wrong try again. I tried 50 times but same thing it won’t work. It says you are in Ukraine maybe since there is a war there that’s why it’s not working
Thank you Yana. I really appreciate your offer of the 10 free outlines, I have no experience and I take care of an elderly man with Down syndrome and he desires to paint. Please help because I can’t download from the link. It just does not work
I don’t think that tracing is cheating. It subconsciously teaches a person how to draw. It’s much like when an author is influenced by the works they read and their experiences in life. All things work in tandem to come together in a complete work of art be it writing, drawing, or any creative process
