Two of my piggies are blind so when I go to pick them up I put my hands gently down their sides for a few seconds so they know that I am about to pick them up.They learnt this through practice.
I didn't realize until this video what a human hand looks like to a piggie. Seems like the talons on a raptor claw! Using the treats to pick them up is reprogramming their instinctive fear which in the wild helps them to survive. Thanks so much for posting. You are so informative, Scotty!
My guinea pigs very quickly figured out that they'll get picked up if they go in the hideys, so they just refused to go into the hideys when I was nearby until I gave up on that method. XD
@@spoon7926 Like I said, they figured out that I would pick them up if they went inside. So they just refused to go into anything that could be picked up when I was nearby. Luckily I got better at catching them without hideys. :)
my guinea pig is so so tiny 😭😩she’s adorable and she finally learned that i’m here to feed her, so whenever i come by she doesn’t run away anymore! but still trying to learn to pick her up
Food doesn’t work...my piggy will yank the food out of my hands and run to his little corner under a part of the cage😂he loves cuddling tho so if he wants cuddles he needs to stop dodging my attempts🤣
Wow, I'm so impressed by your gentle ways with the piggies, Scott. Your immeasurable love for them it's felt through the screen! I love it! Thank you for sharing your advice! I'm eager to be a better human every day to my piggy ❤🥰🐹
All well and good, but could somebody please do a video about how to get you owner to pick you up when you want cuddled? I have Shark pretty well trained to know that if I am doing big stretch in my one corner I want to be picked up, but sometimes even she is really slow about it. Sometimes a little princess just wants some snuggle time, you know?
These are great tips, Scotty. I’m going to start putting mine back in their cage as you showed. I get scratched up sometimes with how excited they are to be back home. 😬
You are the best piggy dad. I swear, the cutest, kindest man I have ever seen. Lucky little piggies to have you. Love the videos! And all your hard work.
I have a problem with my guinea pig.when I went to clean hi cage I started to notice weird breathing and unusual noise so I separated him from his cage mate and I put him in a small cage with water, hay, veggies, and pellets and he did not go in his hideout and he loves he hide and I have to force feed him he won’t move from his corner and I can’t afford a vet trip till Friday maybe can someone help
My girls don’t like being picked up so I use the technique of waiting for them to be relaxed in their cozy and then I pick up the cozy with piggie. I will try the other ones you showed...I appreciate learning new helpful things from you to be a better piggy owner...or rather a veggie providing slave. ❤️ to all your sweet boars!
It’s funny I was just reading last night about what it means when they run . Says they are happy and playing. Popcorn too. It also said and I’ve noticed more now than as a kid. They do recognize their care giver. 🐹 They have their own personality. And are very personable in communication. You learn their language kind of. 🐹
When I used to have a guinea pig I would stroke the side of his face to make sure that he was calm before trying to pick him up by hand. This method usually worked.
Hello! I know you posted this a while ago, but I'm hoping you see this anyway. I just rescued a piggy that had been extremely neglected, emotionally, for approximately a year (this is how old we are assuming he is). He was also pretty physically neglected, and one huge thing I'm noticing is he is EXTREMELY not tame. I don't think he was handled, played with, or interacted with much. I brought him to the vet, which was very difficult for him for sure, but even before that I noticed that I really cannot pick him up because he FLEES. Insanely fast. I don't know what to do! I want to try the cuddle sack, but I fear he'll just try to jump out of it. He does allow me to pet him sometimes before he goes into hiding. I guess my question is, how slow is too slow? Do I try and help force him out of his shell a little into becoming more tame? Can I go very slowly, or is that not productive, because he thinks not being handled is normal? I'm totally happy with respecting his timid personality, but I really want to make any vet visits more tolerable for all of us involved. I'm just curious about how long you think is an acceptable timeframe for him to settle in? Thank you for your content!!
This is great info! I have had 4 guinea pigs in the span of 5 years. My first girl was so easy to handle! My girls and my boy are still skittish when I pick them up especially to clean their cages but are always eager for me to pick them up to go back in!
Trust in Jesus he died for your sins, believe the gospel. Repent!!! If you do sin confess your sins, ask him to help you overcome your sins he will. Obey Jesus, live by his teachings, be led by the Holy Spirit. The Lord is coming soon you must live by his teachings. The love of God is beyond our understanding God bless
When we had just gotten them I found my step-son trying to garb our pigs, following them around with his hand. They were running around scared crazy. He said he had been doing this for a while and it wasn't the first time... They still are very shy and nervous, not trusting at all. Can they have been traumatised from that? Can I ever manage to reassure them? Does anyone have tips? They're 8 month old now.
I notice all these piggies are adults is there a special way to pick up young GPs(3 months)? Or should I wait to pick them up till they are fully grown? I worry that they will not be used to it if I don't start them younger. (I've only just acquired them recently about a week ago)
We just adopted two 2 yo male piggies - their owner needed to redo me them.. (they have multiple kids and dogs and her husband passed away... So far it’s been an ok transition.. we’ve never had guinea pigs before... so we are learning a lot about them... I’m a new subscriber.. TFS..
My guinea pig hates being put down. Anyone know what the hell is going on?lol. He literally screams until I pick him up. Then once I pick him up he's happy as hell. I'm like bro...stop it lol
Of course my piggies don't like to be picked up when they are in the c and c cage, their favorite sweet home, but when they're in the cage where I put them waiting for me to clean their home, they're so impatient to get back they jump into my arms always with the same ritual. Number one is Nina,,, number two is Noisette... Not timid anymore, it's even a game they love😀it's so funny. But to pick them up in their home I use the cuddle sack technlc. Old French Lady.
Awesome techniques. I have two extra extremely skittish piggies. If I’m sitting on the floor or the bed with them, the rules change and I can pet them and pick them up without any issue. But while they’re inside their enclosure, I’m not allowed to touch them. They jump and run. SOMETIMES I can pet one of them while she eats. I followed Saskia’s technique of following behind them calmly with my hands and they will eventually give up. It works, but it wears me out every time lol. Also, I find if I have my hands under all four feet when lowering them back in, they wait til the elevator stops and step off nicely :)
I'm in the process of training to hold my 2-4 month two female guinea pig and when I try tame it, they wriggle like crazy, panicking and wanting to jump off my hand.
Hi Scotty, I just got my piggies and I'm trying to do everything right, you are really great with the piggies, I'm scared I'm going to do something wrong, I have two males, a baby and an adult one year old. I know it will take time but the baby bolts Everytime he sees me. I spot clean every day and use disposable pads for the cage. I have them separated for now until they get a check up. What is the best way to get them to like me and not be afraid?
Hi there, just wondering what part of the house you have all your piggies ?? Some of your videos look like they're in a basement other videos can't tell
Back here rewatching because I tried the first method and my piggies started NOT to take the treat from my hand anymore. They also kearned that I can pick them up in their hideys, so they avoid them now and just run in circles. I built a bridge from their cage to my bed and will coax them to come to me eventually. Also feeding them treats from my open palm, they started to tolerate lil chin scratches somewhat while eating. It took the shy on 3 full weeks to get used to the window opening and closing and the curtains being drawn open and closed, so my expectancies shrink each week 🤣
Does anyone know what it means when my pigs squeak constantly when I am holding them/having them on my lap? My two boys make little squeaking sounds whenever I have them out. I’ve been trying to figure out whether this means they are happy or if they want back in their cage!
My Guinea pigs hate me. All the time they are scared, don't like touch, rien. J' aime beaucoup mes amis. They have a Paradise cage, I give them all my attention but the only thing important for they are the salad. Sorry my English language.
i cant pick up my new guinea pig 😭 i don't know how old he is and the previous owners dropped him off at the petco. he is really sweet, and I've had him for 2 weeks and he definitely likes me , but its nearly impossible for me to pick him up. I take treats out and the second I move my arm he runs right away, and if I managed to get him in my hands he wiggles out or jumps.
We have one guinea pig who is super skittish, fearful and fiesty and will give you a warning nip too. Tried getting her into a tunnel but it is safer pick her up firmly in our hands as she will bolt. The other one is just fine. Not sure what to do about it and it really deters us from picking her up regularly.
Unfortunately my cuddle sack has a hole in the middle for my piggies to peep out of so when ever I wanna pick them up they jump out .. have any tips ? 😂😂
LOVE your video I've got two 6 week old guinea pigs (females) were from the same litter they get on together both are pregnant I was told that by the pet shop when I bought they were mixed with male guineas in the pet shop. I wanted to save them a life of being bred constantly are living a good life now I've had guineas in the past and have had these two for 2 weeks now they are still very nervy of me I bought them a pen which they go in for an hour each day for some freedom for there cage. Im hopeing they become less nervy of me soon.
I typically make my presence known first, then make sure they see me - then do a quick side scoop. Typically they’ll run the first time, then stop and let me get them.
I have 2.5 year old males and they really don’t like to be pick up. one them didn’t care til some months ago. I offer them treats and it’s make it easier to grab one of them but the other one is sooo scare of everything. I also try to scoop them a lot but they run with their lives lol still i try to be gentle and sometimes let them go. My biggest problem is that my cage set up is on the floor. Also when Im holding them sometimes they desperate and try to jump. I don’t know why it’s happening. I haven’t been able to spend a lot of time with them, maybe I should spend some bonding time w them again to see if their shyness goes away 😅
That’s PERFECT! The cuddle sack..I’m going to get one tomorrow! It IS really difficult bc my two run like it’s their life at stake! I didn’t hand raise them. My little one I have raised is much better yet still gets scared at times! I use a bed for her & it usually works but not always, Whereas the sack is perfect! I thank you Scotty! 👏🥰❤️
