@@findus8269 I mean, jazz is an incredibly broad genre, but some of the best jazz songs ever are relatively basic blues progressions at their core. No need to shit on someone who's just beginning by belittling what they're learning.

What a great tutorial ! Very useful. As a guitarist playing acoustic Blues for a couple of years , I just started playing the piano. This Lesson shows it can actualy be really fun learning scales ! I have just one (maybe stupid) question (which has been asked before I think, but I couldn’t find the answer) : do you use the pedal on this one ? all the blues I played on piano so far was without pedal , but this chord progression and rhythm in the left hand seems like it needs some pedalling ? Or am I completely wrong ? (As I said, I’m not very experienced with the piano ) thanks a lot !

Hi Jonny, how can I fit a chord progression with a scale or vice versa. As an example in your video here your chord progression is in A minor Blue scale??? I try to understand. Thanks.

Hi Jonny Curious about how the sliding up to the major 3rd from the minor 3rd works in other keys. For example: in B major sliding up from D to D# is a lot trickier than in A minor / C major sliding up from Eb to E. Do you just use two fingers in keys like B major? Thanks!

@Zoco101
@Zoco101 4 года назад
Jaoao, it does in this exercise, but advanced players share the beat interractively between both hands, and the pianist's job is largely defined by what else is in the band anyway. Sometimes you've gotta play the beat, but often you don't. Look how sparse Count Basie often was. He was one of the blues/jazz players from Kansas City, who most helped to establish the Swing movement. The tune Splanky is a good example.

Good lesson, but being from Chicago, when you say "a slow blues" you expect a very specific form. Still a good lesson though
@Zoco101
@Zoco101 4 года назад
That's true, line2groove. It doesn't have to be a 12-bar or 24-bar, but the importance of these classic forms should have been explained. If we're not careful, everything becomes a blues, and then of course, it's just another excuse to over-analyse a form that needs to be felt more than analysed. As a jazz musician, I used to analyse the blues far too much. Then a jazz teacher told me I didn't need him for blues - I just needed to let go. Since I already knew a lot about jazz and 12-bar sequences, the only concrete blues tip he gave me was to find two notes and make something happen. I would add to that: pump each note or lick till it's begging for mercy. Never move on to a new note until it feels necessary.

Hey guys. Method is OK, but remember that blues are 90% feeling and 10% method. Jonny forgot to mention that. You have to follow your instincts and be ready to break all the rules you learned before. A blues performance is like a street fight. Fight dirty! Speaking of which, try to set two notes against each other. Make them argue! A good blues artist is a scary person who seems to be sad or angry the whole time. So use your sadness and your anger. My other tips are, use the whole keyboard, play "wrong notes", exploit dissonance (particularly minor 2nds) and when in doubt, spread your chords.

Hi Jonny! Thanks a lot for this great video. I am just wondering... Can the A minor blues scale be used in other blues styles than slow blues? And can the C blues scale be used in slow blues? Thanks again!

Hi Carlos ! You can use the Aminor, or Cminor Blues scale for other blues-songs. It`s not the question of `slow`or `fast!`
