The fishermen didn’t live in those houses by the port. The shipowners did. They were extremely rich as Saint-Jean-de-Luz was one of the main fishing ports in France. It has been the biggest port for fishing tuna and sardines. The pink square house in front of the house is called Joanoenia, also known as Maison de l’Infante because it hosted the infant of Spain María Teresa de Austria hen she came to France to marry Louis XIV. The king of France himself stayed at the Lohobiague Enea house. You must have seen it, at the main square, on the corner. It looked a bit like castle. If you look at the houses, especially with a drone, you will notice that many houses have at least one tower. Those are typical shipowner houses. They would climb up to the tower to check on their boats at the port. The macaroons we eat here are the ones from Adam, they are made from almonds. 😊
