loooool. I also felt the same, I was like "Should I keep going on, or just leave it there because it kinda hurts, no?" Actually, I'd say this whole project was a huge blue balls for sure, because of its concept. My apologies haha
I felt the same way on "Wisdom Comes", I wanted to hear that cool funky riff that comes after the main riff. That's what makes "Wisdom Comes" a stand out song on The Link for me, I freaking love The Link and I feel it's arguably Gojira's most underrated album.
@@BigHomieSteveTheMetalHead I let y'all down in that song huh? haha Yes, true, The Link has a special place. It's a breeze to go through and listen to that album.
@@0secmusic9 you still did a great job. One of the things I love is that you didn’t just do the hits necessarily, it shows that you’re a true fan of their work and really listen to their albums in entirety
@@qwerty.4450 Hey, thanks a lot, Ricardo. I have a habit of listening to full albums from my favorite artists and bands, like, I want to hear every single song and appreciate every small detail. Yea, I wasn't even thinking of hits I just went with my favorites, and I'm glad to hear your observation, I appreciate it!
Thanks a lot for your kind words. I've had a hard time choosing favorites from their entire discography as there are so many great riffs haha, but hey, it was fun. Glad you've enjoyed it!
I love the picks for From Mars To Sirius, but Backbones intimidating riffage is insane too! I also love the beginning bit of flying whales where it comes from that calm guitar to that heavier badass rhythm.
Backbone was my 4th pick, I choose Where Dragons Dwell over that one because it's special to me. Yes, that's also great, but it's so hard to choose, dude, even Flying Whales has more than 3 great riffs haha Cheers!
Where Dragons Dwell helped get me through some hard times. But I gotta agree that Backbone is absolutely killer, that's a song where the simultaneous riff + vocals combo just exponentiates both to higher levels. So rad.
Born in Winter is probably my favourite for L'Enfant Sauvage, I feel like it's underappreciated! Fortitude as an album might just be my favourite Gojira album. It perfectly encapsulates the sound they've been working at for the last 10 years, amazing album
Yea, that's also my favorite, I mean I don't think it's underappreciated tho. One of those fan favorites, I feel like. Fortitude is so refreshing I've listened to it multiple times, and I agree. Thanks for your comment!
Coming from a lot of NuMetal and Grunge I wasnt that much into heavier music but last year, Gojira really did it for me. Their music feels so full, it's got everything, it's heavy but still melodic and even got a message. I really enjoy it!
Glad to hear that, welcome to the club haha Oh yea, I fully agree, especially the environmental message makes it ten times more impactful, IMO. Thanks, mate!
@@0secmusic9 And even though, I'm not a guitar player, but having at least a little bit of music knowledge, these songs dont seem to be easy to play :D Well done!
@@hansi639 A couple of them needed some practice, particularly the first two riffs are such a challenge to play them tight, well at least for me haha Thanks a lot, mate. Cheers!
@@0secmusic9 I feel that, I'm a drummer but most of their songs simply have too much fast double bass, can't keep up with them. Mario is too much of a beast :D
Hell yea, tremolo picking between the chugs is so simple yet so groovy. With down picking, you get punchier sound with stronger pick attacks, that's why I tend to stick to down picks until certain fast tempos. If it's reasonable and preferable soundwise, I choose down picking over alternate picking. Thanks for your comment mate!
Hmm, I don't get that vibe tbf. What made you feel that way, is it a specific thing or just the general vibe of the song or something? I'm interested to hearing that!
Bruh I got a laugh at the way you were playing "Fortitude" at the end lmao, and your choice of memes is hilarious 😂😂😂. I got blue ballz several times but it was worth it, I usually pay more attention to the drums but videos like this help me realize how many incredible riffs Gojira has. Great video bro 🤘🤘🤙🤙
Glad you've enjoyed the little memes here and there haha Oh yea, ask me about those blue ballz, dude. lol It was so hard to cut the songs in those build-up moments. For sure, they got plenty, all the boys at Gojira know their crafts and are great musicians. Thanks a lot again, cheers mate!
Thank you very much, I tried to get them all right as close as I can get, and good to hear that you've liked the result. I appreciate your kind words, mate. Cheers!
Gojira is part of bands I have heard so much good about but never ook the time to really dive into their stuff. A mistake I feel I should correct in the very near future...
That Love riff Just SO creative for the debute album BTW. We are usually love to play certain songs just because of some small parts of 1-2 riffs or so. It was kinda cool to realise that you picked almost every one of my fav parts
Thanks, mate. Oh well, funny enough, before I decided to do the outro with a little different vibe than the rest of the video, I was about to do Sphinx as the last one. Banger riff, for sure!
Oh, yea, they're all bangers for sure. If I made this list from 5 riffs instead of 3, my life would be so much easier lol Thanks, mate, I appreciate your comment!
Masterful playing, mixing and tone. If I wasn't looking, I would swear it was just album samples. I love how you showcase the different play techniques as well. I learned a lot from this video. Great stuff!
Wow, I'm very thankful for your kind words and comment, John. I appreciate it a lot. I'm trying to make the most out of my cheap gear, and hearing that it was pretty close to the albums, makes me delighted. Happy to hear that, mate, cheers!
Fantastic playing! My favorite riff is the bending-madness after the more melodic intro in Gift of Guilt. The first time I heard it I was convinced I've never heard anything like that before being done on the guitar.
Thanks, dude! I think I was exposed to great tapping playing from EVH, that's why it didn't blow me away like that, but of course Gift of Guilt has a beautiful melody, particularly with its lyrical theme, it hits like a damn rock!
Another world, I wondered what band made that riff. I heard it one day on the xfinity metal channel (930? Maybe idk) but I heard it and figured out what they were doing in a couple mins and I play that riff from time to time plus mutations of that idea concept
Yea, Wolf Down The Earth's vibe is different than the rest in that album IMO, and I kinda dig that part, and since this is my personal favorite type of list, that's why I went with it. Thanks a lot, mate, exactly!
@@FifatlasHD Yess, mate, Death is also one of my favorites I know their whole discography. Speaking of Death, I shared a new cover of Crystal Mountain check it out if you want. Cheers!
Great video, straight to the point, great riffs that make me just want to grab the guitar and discover more. Looking forward to more videos like this - seeing as you have covers of Lamb of God and Children of Bodom, perhaps I may suggest those for future videos. I'd love to see a video like this on Vektor, don't know if you've heard them but they too have this cool "outer-spacey" vibe.
Thank you, yes for sure, Gojira's really an inspirational band. Thanks for the suggestion, however, I will focus on exploring new genres, writing original music, and composing musical pieces in the style of mini-documentary-type videos. Sure I'll keep doing covers here and there spontaneously, but my intentions aren't on making this channel a mainly cover channel. Cheers, mate!
They still kick ass, IMO. I personally love pretty much their whole discography and appreciate their search for new sounds, and evolvement in different directions as artists. But I also get what you love about their first albums, like a more raw death metal type sound. Thanks for sharing your opinion here. Cheers dude!
I used to listen to terra incognita and the link front to back nearly a daily basis throughout high school. Blow me away you(niverse), rememberance, lizard skin, in the forest, etc some of the nastiest riffs I've ever heard
I discovered Gojira with L'enfant Sauvage, I didn't listen to any of their songs when I was little, I envy you in that regard haha Yes, dude, they are such bangers, I agree. Cheers!
Thanks, man. I'll be spontaneously making covers in the next videos because I mainly want to explore different genres and write original compositions. I just don't want to force myself. I want to have fun doing videos while experimenting with them. But, surely, I'll be doing covers, just not all the time. I appreciate your comment, cheers!
Before i go on this tangent, i just want to make clear that this video is GREAT. What i'm about to say really has nothing to do with this video because all of the covers are truly flawless, but it did remind me of something i've asked for a long time. Why does everybody go crazy over that break down from remembrance? I know, its played very technically and is kinda bouncy, but its just open d, and whenever the song is talked about its always just that same goddam breakdown. It also doesn't help that i feel that the entire rest of the song is way better than the breakdown and i feel its getting discredited. Anyways, tangent over, great cover. Ps: sorry for more than likely making a lot of commenters mad
Thanks a lot, mate. I get what you're saying, and I appreciate your input. I feel like it's polyrhythmic in a way that not too alienizing to the listener, it's not like a Meshuggah riff that blows you away and then makes you give up on trying to keep up with the song. It's bouncy for sure but in a little teasing way that keeps you engaged throughout the outro, tastefully written. I think many great and iconic riffs are made out of just one note, especially with chugs and cool rhythms. Also, the context of the song is very important, in my opinion. Sometimes dynamic structure and other times the buildup that leads to that riff gives that heaviness. The rest of the song is overlooked, sadly. Cheers!
Great riff choices man! Also, the way you hold your guitar pick is wild! Misha from Periphery used to hold his guitar pick in a similar way, but he eventually changed it to a more "proper" technique after seeing how Jake and Mark use the proper technique. He changed it because the way he used to hold it placed limitations on what he could do. I believe you can find the video of him talking about that on RU-vid. Anyway, sick playing man!
Thanks a lot man, appreciated it. Oh it's funny that you mentioned that, I'm going through a similar phase atm, I've recently injured myself after years of bad playing habits and I also can relate to that limitations cause I was feeling stuck in some aspects especially in rhythm playing. On my way to achieving that "proper technique" haha Cheers, thanks for the comment!
Wow, thanks man. I think Archetype Gojira is really great, it punches through the mix with its bright characteristic, especially when you hard-pan guitars to the left and right. Other than that, not much really going on, really. Oh also, just git gud haha
Man, Gojira used to be great. I really liked from Mars to L’Efant (I know that’s not the right spelling) albums. When they dropped their death metal edge, I pretty much checked out on the band.
Oh, I see, I'm on the other side of the spectrum, usually, if a band changes style, pushes the boundaries, and/or evolves, I tend to like their new direction and appreciate their evolving sound.
Maybe a couple of hours. Honestly, if you only listen without seeing the notes, it feels harder than it actually is. Then I go from extremely slow to learn the pattern, and after memorizing it, I speed it up. And voilà! haha
Glad to hear that! Yea, I also find that song to be a little underappreciated. Maybe it flew under the radar since other songs in that album are relatively more outstanding, idk just a thought haha
Thank you to introducing me to some older riffs I would’ve never heard, also love the editing lol. Not to mention your playing is phenomenal! Earned a subscriber here man < 3
Oh, my pleasure, mate! Haha spiced it up a little with the memes. Thank you so much, it's great to hear that! Welcome and see you in the next one! Cheers 🤘
Which riff from Satan is Lawyer do you think is the best? Honestly, dude, this video was extremely hard for me just because I had to leave out so many terrific riffs because otherwise, it would be their whole discography you know? haha Thanks a lot, glad you've liked the selection and the riffage! edit: Now, that I listened to it again. I think I'd personally choose the riff that comes after that double kicks part if I'd have add it to my list.
This was awesome!!! I was so glad to see Where Dragons Dwell and Wolf Down the Earth, two of my favorites that are also the only two Gojira songs I know how to cover so far. As a mostly mandolin player, it of course sounds quite different when I cover them, but you absolutely CRUSHED these faithful covers. (Incidentally, Toxic Garbage Island is one I am currently working on!) Thanks so much for sharing! You got a new sub now, for whatever it's worth. Keep it up, would love to see you play live some day!!
Heyy, thanks a lot. I really appreciate it. Yeah, wanted to include some of their more emotional and dynamic songs to make the list more diverse and representative of their discography. I'm glad you find your favorites in there too. Also, the mandolin is a beautiful instrument. I remember having one lying around in my home when I was a kid, and I liked it, but I lost interest over time for whatever reason. It would be interesting to hear Gojira riffs on a mandolin. You should make that happen and upload it, haha. Welcome to the channel! cheers
@@0secmusic9 You def get first dibs on listening when I get there, hopefully soon! I don't have any video equipment, but just got some good audio recording stuff, so the next step is a mini-lesson on producing I guess! :) (Though it's worth saying up front that I can't cover them note for note - between the speed and the ... challenge of translating them, I just try to get something close enough to capture the feeling).
@@TaeKwonHottie Haha, I'd be happy to. Just let me know when it's ready! Don't worry about the equipment and the note-for-note thing; just go for it when you feel like it. I'm sure it will sound good. Also, I think the note-for-note approach isn't that creative or engaging. Hearing something with a personal touch and a different style is always more interesting, even if it's imperfect or whatever, in my opinion. Of course, I can think of exceptions and other ways around it, but that would be my take on it:) rock on!
Thanks a lot, Toby! Copying from another comment: "The majority are in standard D tuning. However, a couple of them are in drop C tuning. Also, The Art of Dying was in CGCD#GC."
Oh, I'm happy to hear that, Yannick. I tried to encapsulate their discography in a short and precise format with guitar tones close to their original work. Thanks a lot for your comment!
@@0secmusic9 Terra is great too but I feel like on Link you can hear there sound really taking shape but there is still so much rawness it ends up sounding like Morbid Angel half the time
@@mikesbadopinions9671 Oh, I see what you're saying. Yea, you can totally see their progression and development in that album, both songwriting and sonic-wise. Now that you mentioned it, not too long ago I made that same Morbid Angel reference to someone haha Cheers dude!
I have a video where I show how I go about recording guitar covers. There you can see the method I use to get a good sound. For this one, I used Archetype Gojira and recorded guitar on two tracks and panned them hard left and right. That's the basic trick for getting a good full-sounding guitar tone(double tracking). Hope that helps, let me know if you have any questions, take care!
Umm I think it was just regular dropped C. Why you chose 448hz is it because of that tape effect thing(similar to the ride the lightning)where it slightly makes the notes sharper because it's sped up a little? .I'm asking because don't know much about that technical stuff :)
Haha, I appreciate it, mate! That's what I tried to accomplish, as close as I can get to the original, good to hear that you receive it like this. Thanks again, and cheers!
