Wow! This is so cool. When our lead guitarist quit my teen-age garage band two weeks before a school dance at which we were supposed to play, I thought "I can show my brother a basic bass part(which I was playing) as one bass note per chord, and I can teach myself to play lead; after all, since I had two weeks, hiw hard could it be! I thought, I should cop a lick or two off Jimi's band of gypsies album my younger brother had bought. I put on "who knows" and started to learn the basic licks at the start, when I noticed that when Jimi went lower in the riff it was the same notes but just lower down. Once I realised these notes had five different shapes on the geography of the fingerboard, I realised you could play anything in a three chord song on these frames or boxes. Without learning any more of the song, I spent a couple of ours committing these "boxes" to memory. I didn't realise at the time but a year or so later, I saw that if you moved the first shape down a few frets it was major sounding, and you could move continually between both starting points of what I learned years later,!was the minir and major pentatonic, and blues scales. For years I used these shapes by ear without knowing what they were long before I ever worked out a major scale and it was all because it hit me within two hours one afternoon trying to copy licks of a Hendrix record.(Suffice it to say that my first performance of lead guitar wasn't a walk in the park as I thought it to be, but tgat afternoon's discovery lit a fire under me and turned me into a lead guitar improvisational fanatic which lasts to this day, a couple of months from my 70'th birthday. What an awesome song and how it inspired me, although to this day, I've never bothered to finish learning the song, but branched out into 24/7 experimentation and thirst for improv! Thanks for featuring what was to me a landmark moment in my musical life.

Jack has the most tasteful musical vocabulary, always a pleasure to learn from this channel. He really know which notes sound the sweetest over any chord. Thanks to Jack I've learned the most valuable lesson in my 12 years of playing. I take the time to slow down and really pay attention to how each note feels in the context of the chords and how it ties in to the overall movement and dynamics of the melody. I'm finally making music and not just noodling scales up and down aimlessly with no musical impact.

Another awesome lesson, these licks sound really vocal to me,like there is a conversation going on! Beautiful. Even the spaces between phrases have "colours" to them if that makes any sense, it's the best way I can explain it. I have started to hear things in a more intense way it's magical..as always Jack thank you ❣️

I have always enjoyed your lessons (and learned a lot!) and your tasty playing. But I just stumbled upon a video of you and Kirk Fletcher (who I also love), and felt your solo just rip right through my heart. I can't put my finger on one, or two or however many characteristics that did it for me in your playing - there's just some kind of magic there. It's the same thing that Larry Carlton has; I can't really tell what it is, but it's there. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that, as valuable as your lessons are, listening to you playing is the best lesson I've ever had. For that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

That first compound bending lick from who knows in C minor (C# position at the 9th feet because of the E flat. tuning) is awesome. The second from the same tune where he mixes major and minor pentatonic s and gets a Mixolydian flavor. On the third lick he shows how much mileage he gets out of box 1. He is j it at remarkable and whenever I go back to Hendrix I am always like "oh yeah, that is Why he's my favorite player.' something with Beck, early Clapton, Page, SRV Kossof, Trower, Frank Marino, of course pre Sammy Van Halen but mostly the British blues cats plus the legends from America like Robert Johnson, Lead Belly, Big Billy Broonzy Muddy Waters, Son House, Howlin Wolf, Albert Collins, Lightning Hopkins, T Bone Walker, BB King, Freddie King , Albert King, Otis Rush, Elmore James, Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, Warren Haynes, Buddy Guy,SRV now Josh Smith, Joe Bonamassa, Derek Trucks, John Mayer (not his pop stuff but his ability as a blues player, Kirk Fletcher or Eric Gales and these guys taking blues on it's evolution

At 2:40 you talk about catching the g-string with your middle finger. It sounds great, but I learned that lick by bending the b string up then catching the g-string with my ring finger at the top of the bend and releasing the bend on the same fret. But your way sounded almost the exact same. Did Hendrix do both ways or did I just happen to come across a bad Tab?

I'm not sure about the picking - You're not using alternate picking and you're not using all down or all up. Do you have a pdf that explains this? It's quite a long video with index links - Are picking directions covered elsewhere in the video? Thanks.

I get thrown off by so much bending. I know it sounds cool but to better present the coolness I prefer you play the the same notes w/o bending, then play the bending . Then I will be justified in stealing bending idea.
