NEVER do that last hack. IT ruines your HDD even more. Unless it's a solid state, ( which doesn't need rubber XD ) It is still a device that needs to read info while spinning very fast. By moving it even more there will be also more corruption written on the HDD. Eventually it will even loosen every part up, so it will die on you. So DO NOT DO IT.
@SkookumChoocher
@SkookumChoocher 7 лет назад
That's nonsense. I don't recommend to hang the harddrive in this way (the flat rubber band, moreover without any washers under the screw heads can deteriorate over time or due to vibrations and the harddrive can fall down, which would be a serious problem), but a flexible suspension won't do any harm to the drives. I've a home server with two drives held by bungee cords (but in a much much more robust way than shown in the video) running 24/7 for many years without any problem. There's one important thing as somebody mentioned in the comments, and that's cooling - I installed a fan in front of the harddrives to blow cool air from outside of the case directly at the drives.
@TomasWille
@TomasWille 7 лет назад
sumixSTYXX You have a point, but i would strongly advice not to use any RPM hard drives in a way that can make it wiggle during use. My advice would be that the rubber straps aren't that bad, but turn it tight between the HDD and it's case mount. It will mute the vibrations with it but it will remain fixed. About why it's killing the HDD when moving, is that i have really bad experience with it, furthermore this warning is all over the internet and in all HDD manuals. But to make it general, just buy an SSD. Saves a lot of problems. Also faster.
@SkookumChoocher
@SkookumChoocher 7 лет назад
I agree that the HDD shouldn't be just wiggling around when the case moves even a tiny bit, yes, it should be fixed pretty tightly, but also a bit flexibly to cancel the vibrations and to not transfer them to the case which could then amplify them and cause more noise. I'm not so sure about the SSDs, I use one as a system drive, but have been reluctant so far to use it as data storage since I don't trust it as much as an HDD, but time will tell and maybe I'll change my opinion in the future.
@nerf123dca
@nerf123dca 7 лет назад
its a shock absorber you silly. the hdd is not functioning anymore its just there to absorb all vibrations. he mentioned that you can use the disk drive too of you dont use them anymore. he just used an old one for an example.

Also, if you don't happen to have a rubber band handy, just get 30ft of SATA cable and let your HDD dangle on it through your office window. Certain adverse side effects are likely, but I guarantee that the noise will be greatly reduced.
@tomw8655
@tomw8655 6 лет назад
Oh man, Gotta try that. Still have enough old sata cables laying around, Have a big windows Close to my pc, So it will be perfect, Plus when it rains i have a water cooled HDD. What better do you want.
@addydiesel6627

Er what about the birds, they will defacate droppings on the drive which will cause overheating 🤢
@DL-kc8fc
@DL-kc8fc Год назад
@@addydiesel6627 Therefore, it is necessary to immerse the HDD in a bucket of water and let it hang from the window by the SATA cable. It is necessary to change the water occasionally. In order for the cooling to be effective, it is a good idea to drill several holes in the HDD.

FYI- I use the earth magnets on my motorcycle. I place them on the frame on the bottom of the bike. This gives the motorcycle more "mass" when I stop at a stop light. The magnetic sensor in the road will now detect the bike as a car and change the light.

I was a computer repair tech in undergrad, so naturally I would experiment on my own home computer. To make that easier I lightly rested the case on the computer so I could remove it quickly. One day I decided my loft was dirty so I plugged in the vacuum cleaner, not realizing someone had not turned the on switch to off and had just unplugged the vacuum to turn it off. As soon as I plugged it in I heard a surging sound, very fast, then some pops. I realized immediately that my computer had taken a surge. I pulled the case off to see small flares of flame coming off several of the chips. All I could think was, "That sucked."

Great ideas but I wouldn't use the inner tube mount. I would use the inner tubes as a buffer on the sides of the drive and then mount the drive as usual with the screws. The rubber will still absorb vibrations but you won't have to worry about the drive swinging freely which can be bad if the computer is knocked over while it's running.

You forgot to mention that HDD motors are not simple 2 terminal motors which you can just stick to power source. If HDD electronic is dead/missing/whatever, there has to be driver circuit to spin the HDD motor with precisely timed impulses to each of it's pins. Arduino + few transistors and resistors are suitable. Also, HDD motor speed can be finely adjusted with right circuit.
@DL-kc8fc
@DL-kc8fc Год назад
If the motor's electronics are not damaged (the motor rotates), the handyman will be surprised by the fact that the motor stops after 20-40 seconds. It is necessary to turn the power off and on again to get the motor to start turning again.

This is still a great video. I got like 10 dead hard drives that Ive been wanting to do something with that is very similar to what you're doing. Although I'm not a fan of the last one as the hard is very balance sensitive and it will affect it in the long run. Thus the ten dead hard drives lol

Creating rubber shocks like that makes it worse as the drive will now spin and wobble consistently decreasing it's maximum lifetime. The sand paper idea was pretty good though, I have hundreds of dead drives and I'm sure I'll use that idea at some point.

LOL. I was just wondering if I could make a sanding/sharpening station out of my dying hard drive so I was looking for ideas for what I could do with it and what do you know. I was not the only one :D If a hard drive disk is spinning at 7200RPM and it has a diameter of ~9cm, the outer edge is moving at little over 30 meters per second! Not too shabby at all for light work ;) But it's not a portable HDD as the one in this video so how should I power it? hmmm....

Simply genial! In these videos, I have the proof that I'm not wrong to make a motor with an HDD! But, I want to know before beginning is which precaution I must take about manipulation of the HDD's PCB (under the disk)? That really EDS sensitive? The HDD motor seems to be powerful enough to "drive" something as a fan! Here, I notice that the disc acts as a flywheel!

the rubber pieces holding the hard drive would cause more damage to it than just being screwed in, sure when its screwed in it will take a lot of the impact, but its better than it slamming into the side of the case and taking even more damage
@Myndale
@Myndale 7 лет назад
A lot of you guys clearly missed the point of that last hack entirely. It's not a working drive that's suspended by the rubber straps, it's the old dud one, hence why there are no power or data cables plugged into it. The point of the hack is to (in theory at least) absorb micro vibrations from the case so that they don't propagate through to the working drive(s).

Something I done to my computer which I regret a little bit now - I was using a peltier Thermo Electric Cooling, to cool the CPU for overclocking. I managed to get the CPU to -10c and all was going well. I noticed the temp start to creep up from -10 and eventually reached 1c so I knew something was wrong and decided to take a look inside. The temp increase was due to a partial blockage in the water cooling system but not only that, the 30AMP connectors I had used for the Thermo Electric Cooling plate had got so hot that the positive and negative terminals had melted and were seconds away from the metal contacts touching each other. I decided to remove it all and return to plain water cooling to be safe. I still have the components for a rainy day :)

LOVE THE Micro Disk Grinder (MDG).. And who can live without magnets? Good, high quality vid. Thanks. RE: Drive hanging loose: Drives can run hot. It depends on the drive or course (mfg, mdl, RPM, design). I've worked with hard-drives, well.. before there were hard drives.. cough cough. Some stay COOL.. others you could could a steak on. Usually the faster spinning ones, =>10K. I've gone as far as to mount heat sinks to the sides to keep the temps reasonable. Hanging out in the air, well.. ouch? A good metal case with the drive in contact makes a GR8T heat sink. Even adding some heat sink compound to the sides (for the H.O.T. ones:) Not to many electronic devices like heat, or run better with heat. Just my 4 cents. Thank you for the video! Cheers.

Am new at this stuff. Will the HDD platter spin just like that when you connect it to a power supply? Or, do you have to connect it to a power from PC or any other computer?

Here's a freebie for you: remove the disc from the drive and use it as a shiny element in a wind chime. They make a rather nice "ting" when struck. The reflective properties allows them to catch flashes of light nicely at night, too. Just make sure to wipe the drive of all data first or the bad people may steal it!
