You don’t need to be drunk but I can say having a buzz will help open up the throat and loosen muscles. Back when I was doing my own vocals, on really tough parts I would go to the store and by a few beers and a shot or two. The downsides of this is you can damage vocal cords if you don’t know what you’re doing. As alcohol can numb pain.
If you wanna do it try doing it in fry scream technique that way you can hold it even MORE than 17 seconds but ofc you can't do that right away needs some practice :P
And that's still not enough to be on Chester's level. you have to then be able to do that in the middle of a 1-2 hour set filled with other difficult songs
Think havung the stamina to pull of that 17 second scream in an 1.5 hour set is insane in itsself, granted they usually played the song at the beginning of their sets. However the actual note is in the 5th octave which is absolutely bananas, especially doing it so distorted and for 17 seconds, wnd then going into the song again
For real, holding a scream for people who can scream is fairly simple, you just need breath control but the high note after is truly a test of how good you are
Wasn’t the their biggest fan, but I’ll never forget that moment at work when the radio DJ announced he was dead. One of the few times I was actually taken back
I don't care whether it's the "best" metal scream or not, it's the one that gives me chills the most and makes me want to tear my vocal chords apart, the one that speaks to me the most
I tried so many times to scream like him, and I instantly got cough. I give up. But the most incredible thing of Chester is that he can rapidly escalate his voice from angelic nice voice into a scream.
To “scream”, think of when you were younger and your parent told you to clean your room and you give a deep and overwhelming “uuuggghhhh”, to show how irritated you are. It comes from the bottom of your diaphragm. Start pushing from your stomach with the over the top, “ugh, ahh, oh, ra” sounds by changing your mouth shape. It shouldn’t strain the vocal chords nor cause more than a slight tickle to slightly “ahem” to fix. Good luck 👍 lmk of this helps!
I have always been impressed with how Chester could add nuanced distortion to any vocal line he sang. It is so hard to do. I can't imagine singing show after show like that. The man was a super hero vocalist.
@@EdsonFrameshop That's not the point. There are tons of rock singers who have great clean singing skill and also great grit/distortion singing. Blending the two is a skill set all it's own. And stop calling it fry.
@@ska4dragons That is exactly the point though. His ability to add nuanced distortions tastefully is built upon his natural ability to sing clean notes. That's true for any vocalist. Not many are as gifted as he was.
I wish we had the means to protect his vocal chords so he could continue to scream his hearts content...it was after he lost his voice that...not long after...we lost him u.u...You will be missed and forever legend, your songs and lyrics helped me through very hard times and, ironically or not, kept me alive when I was also about to leave...
He was one of the best. No question about it. He screams and sings at the same time. Like, who can do that? Seriously. Huge respect to Chester, just amazing vocals.
Had the pleasure of seeing LP in Seoul SK in 2011, absolutely the best vocals I’ve ever heard live. When Chester would hold notes, you would see raw emotion across the building. Absolutely incredible
Y'all are talking about Chester's God given ability, but we not gonna talk about bro saying ,"17 seconds is a long time I keep telling my girlfriend that, but-"😂
The best scream in metal music. Plenty of legendary vocalists have an impeccable technique and a powerful, well-controlled scream, but most screamers cant actually sing different notes while screaming. Chester has this unique control where he's screaming but ALSO singing. He's also got the most deeply emotional scream in music. No other scream makes the listener feel the emotion to their very core like this one does.
THE MUSIC HE MADE WAS DARK AND REAL, BUT AT THAT MOMENT IT SOUNDS SO GOOD AND EASY TO RELATE TO, NOW WHEN HE DIED FROM SUICIDE THOSE SAME EXACT SONGS SOUNDS DIFFERENT LIKE A CRY FOR HELP
i think his most difficult for him to perform live is "keys to the kingdom" which maybe the reason they never performed that song on tours but that song has already a debut performance by their new vocalist emily
I mean…it was Tuesday. That’s just what he did on Tuesdays. Blew everyone else out of the water and was a badass while maintaining being human. Nothing worse than losing good people. World gets a bit darker every time we lose one of them.
I have pulled off screams in other music, and I will say the worst thing that can happen is the head rush that almost certainly will lead to passing out from lack of oxygen. I remember one time I was singing in the car and I almost passed out while screaming got a huge head rush, and became extremely lightheaded.
Why.. Why does it hurt so much.... Voice like a bullet.... hits the target.... is so beautiful that when it hits, you want to disappear.... And melt into it.... Chester... you were the only one... And the best...
Chester Bennington has the best screaming voice has the best voice all around nobody beats Chester Bennington a true artist I miss him I miss his voice I miss his music I miss just looking at him
I like to sing Linkin Park in the shower, I’ve only ever sung the Given up scream once, and I had to sit down immediately after that so that I wouldn’t pass out and crack my head open. He was truly something else.
Hi Marc. Dang, looks like you caught me scrolling through #shorts.......wait a minute....been here before.....just, in another dimension, a different format, perhaps.....same great content!
The softer singing parts are actually a lot harder for Chester according to Mike Shinoda on Howard stern he said Chester could scream all day but 10 minutes of singing was really hard on his voice
You guys have no idea how difficult it is to sing "The Messenger" in its original key. There is a technique to do the screams but The Messenger was done in full chest.
I can do the Given Up scream. It's tough but it's possible. The vocals on songs like Crawling, however, are a totally different beast. Yes they sound less difficult. But adding fry distortion to cleans like in Crawling is much harder than doing a full on fry scream like in Given Up. I feel like it's also more dangerous for the vocal cords. I can't do the songs like Crawling for more than one verse if i can even do that. It's really rough on the throat. I don't know how Chester sustained that distortion for so long. Chester was really a master of his craft and very few rock or metal singers, if anyone, will ever come close to him.
