"It's much better to learn the theory about the stuff you can already play, rather than learning complicated theory that you can't relate to." I completely agree. Oh how I wish I could go back in time and say that to my high school music teacher! Great video. I'm a horn player trying to learn some piano for a composition.
You can do this in any key. In the key of c.. the b is the minor flat 5 and the 5 is the dominant... a minor isthe minor key with all white keys so b is the second and has a minor flat 5 and e is the dominant 5.. he used this formula just in D..
That being said he taught this progression and altered dominant really well.. this video helped a ton.. and then knowing the theory will help me apply it. But if u want to play it in just the one key or can transpose it without theory then im just whining about nothing
You're the first music teacher in my whole life of playing keyboard who ever said such profound words, "You don't have to learn the complicated names. You can learn that later" That's what I did. And it helped me focus on learning how to play.
I am a raw beginner with piano and I dont want to play twinkle twinkle little star....well.......maybe using the chords you have kindly taught us. I hated jazz years ago but my ears are now starting to love it. Thank you. You are a good teacher with a calm reassuring voice.
This is a great way to learn. I am self-taught so, I don't have good fingering, but I have a good ear. Thank you for sharing your unique style of teaching. I am trying to learn how to play jazz for my own listening pleasure and hopefully one day, for others to enjoy! Thank you I have subscribed because I want to learn more. :)
Thank you so much for making this video. I totally zoned out during music theory as a kid and now that I'm into music, it's been a struggle trying to learn again but so far this has been one of the most helpful videos in helping me learn to play some jazzy chords. THANK YOU

Thank you very much. Took me about an hour to learn but I have it down now. Sounds incredible. Just bought a new keyboard, first time playing in 25 years.

Hey man, new to the channel. I'm trying to learn jazz progression and this was certainly helpful. I use similar approach to whatever I learn: application now, theory later. But just a quick question: how do you employ jazz voicing in a song with a major scale? Thank you for the tut btw!
Thank you so very much for this valuable information. The sound of the chords are so rich. Correct me if i'm wrong but they're called tension chords. As a composer I am already getting some ideas. I'm excited. Thanks again. I immediately subscribed.
Any suggestions for a book with jazz chord progressions for piano just written out. Not necessarily with lessons but different progressions with multiple examples. Ted Greene did a great book for jazz guitar chords like that. Is there one for piano?
I think i’m getting this now, so a melody is the bare part of the song and the part that everyone remembers, and the chords are stuff you add on to it to give it different feels.
Thank you so much for this. I haven't practiced in a while. I am definitely gonna be hanging out here. This will be expanding my knowledge regarding the rudiments and I will be experimenting with these voicings in my compositions after i've practiced them in all the keys. I immediately subscribed.
I have never taken lessons, and can barely read music. But I've been around music since I was a child. I can distinguish between what works, and what doesn't work. I knew how to use chromatic scales before knowing what a chromatic scale ileven was lol Sometimes you just know without knowing.
bruv, these chords... lovely. im a bass player, play a lot of funk, a little jazz, make elctronic music, garage/drum n bass/house, feel like i wanted to expand my really basic understanding of chords having come from an instrument that rarely strays beyond 1 note at a time. typed in jazz chord, came here and m8, absolutely beautiful stuff. gonna hit that sub as a thank you on the strength of the 1 video alone, im gonna use these chords, and im gonna go binge watch the rest of ur channel.
Is there any reason why at 5:40 you display the D major triad as D - *Gb* - A? That confused me when I was trying to work out where you got the Gb from in the D7 alt chord
Can you explain what an Alt Dominant 7 is compared to the Dominant 7? I think music theory wise I wish there was a bit more explanation on what's changed. The 5th was raised and the 3rd was lowered, is that it? I think I'm misunderstanding what it is
Hello , you make things simpler , 👍🏾 Also , are there any books of songs and themes with letter notes ( from the beginning I got adapted to letter notes -cdefgab- )
The Minor 7 Flat 5s are a little confusing to me because its got that Gb from the D Major Scale. Like when I'm constructing chords for the other scale degrees, I should be using just the D Minor Scale right? Or do I have that wrong? NVM: I think its derived from the Harmonic Minor Scale which has the Major 7th scale degree
In jazz we tend to just notate most chords as 7ths, even though they are rarely played with just the 7th. This leaves it open for the player to decide what extensions / voicing they want to play.
Nothing! It's just a label. But some chords are found more frequently in jazz and they tend to have way more chord extensions and dissonance within the chord.
Alt chords are pretty confusing. I realized that they are an augmented chord with flat third (b3) and flat seventh (b7) added (⬆️). Like this: 1 b3 3 #5 b7 C Eb E G# Bb ⬆️ ⬆️ The voicing that you shown start from the flat seventh (b7) with the root (1) on top, like this: b7 b3 3 #5 1 G C Db F A ⬆️⬆️
Thanks for this! RU-vid wouldn't be the same without these troll kids acting like experts. Don't change a thing you are doing. Don't let them bother you. This is a useful lesson. Question. Is there a relation between the altered dominant scale and altered chords?
Haha don't worry, I don't take too much notice of what people think... unless it's constructive criticism :) Yes, they are very much related, the altered scale will fit over all altered chords so you could use it to figure out what notes to use when soloing over an altered dominant.
What is an altered chord? I find this confusing since there are MANY flavours of altered chords like b5 #5 b9 #9 #11 b13 etc. Just to say altered is not enough imo, unless I am missing something?
Your views on music theory - from the beginning of this lesson - are spot on; both for music and most any other practice in life. Fucking brilliant, hombre.
When playing these types of chords, the most important chord tones are the 3rd and 7th, the rest aren't actually that important. It's the players choice whether or not to include things such as the 5th, sometimes it sounds better without!
Anybody with reasonable knowledge of the piano but poor jazz chord knowledge (like me!) will be able to play with this sequence in all different keys after spending an hour with this video instruction. Excellent work, Sir PianoPig!!
