Truth... Driven thru there in the middle of the night 35-45mph in feet of snow in a big truck. Just saw the video where I saw swift smack a trailer from this doing 60mph !!!
Thank you....I-81 is Truck-a-palooza and they drive too fast, tailgate, and are on the road too long! It is a nightmare on a good day. And they have raised the speed limit on these highways to 70 mph which means everyone is going 80+ while checking their phones.
I drive this stretch almost every day, it doesn't matter if you're going 30mph because you'll be surrounded by trucks going 70. It's a very stressful road.
I drive that stretch almost every day, just a few weeks ago I helped a car that hydroplaned into a tree. It doesn't matter if you're driving 30mph because you will be surrounded by trucks going 70. I can't even count how many times I've yelled to myself "g*ddamn meth-ed out trucker almost killed me! Slow down!"
Driving in rain thru there ain't a problem at 70mph even if its 55mph..... This is the type of weather when you should be doing 35-45mph......... Period.
The cause of the accident......snow squalls?.........ummm the cause is idiot drivers on auto pilot driving like its summer time. Weaving in traffic and tailgating to get ahead of the person ahead of you......I never understood this and I’ve done a 8.4 G climb in an F-15D and hit speeds these people can only dream of.......but I drive my vehicle slow never going above the speed limit and slowing down for conditions and not driving in terrible weather.
I can still remember an incident that happened over 30 years ago, myself and young daughter on I80, a sudden complete white out, I immediately slowed down, there had to be a dozen or more semis, that did not slow, within a couple of minutes, there was a crash, I had pulled off the road and stopped, 23 vehicles involved. SCARY
@@karenmoriarty5754 You might be talking about 1999 and I was there just west of Bloomsburg Pa when all hell started to break loose. I still had some decent traction hit the auto 4wheel drive, I have bought 5 since Chrissy.... She was the very first truck I ever had with such capablities and it saved my life never used the feature on the interstate before. I wasat 25mph hit the button and snuck between the piled up semis and cars caught the Light street exit and went home on really slick back roads from there but I did get home. I still remember them booms of the trucks clobbering each other.. I still have Chrissy my 98 Silverado she is my primary driver... I often Kiss her on the hood now and then she has done many battles like that one since then and I keep her in tip top health...Including body and frame spas and turtle wax baths... My old lady hates when I put my truck in her bath tub with her and join in to wash em...
If you've ever been caught in a "white out" you know it's a terrifying helpless feeling. You look for exits you can't see or find. You are petrified to keep going because it's as though there's a white sheet draped across the windshield. You also realize that you can't stop knowing anyone behind you will plow into you. You just pray like it's last 30 seconds on earth because it may very well be.
That's becouse the majority of FedEx rigs are private contractors, most that wouldn't be able to drive for anyone else becouse they can barely drive the truck themselves.
If it's so "white out" conditions why don't the trucks slow down and pull over? It's common sense to me... but there's not much of that left is there...
People should know that when it’s raining or snowing you need to slow down especially when it’s foggy and almost zero visibility! It’s sad that this thing always happen 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 God bless their souls!
Exactly, I get that this happens out of nowhere, but people should know in weather like this you should drive slower even if it’s not bad! It’s being precautious for your safety.
I saw more videos of it on Twitter where people were getting on the side of the road but it was so bad that they could see until they hit another car that was on the road as well. There was so much fog and snow and the guy that was recorded said the weather came out of nowhere
common sense is if you cannot see in front of you while driving in fog, you slow down not to mention black ice and snow conditions. All vehicles attempted to stop at last second, but it was too late since their speeding was too fast to control. There should be driving assist driving radar on cars that would slow vehicles down until we have autonomous cars driving themselves. Mankind invented Ai but somehow we lapse more often than usual to stupidity. Sorry for loss of life, because it was preventable with simple common sense as usual. Trying to save 15 minutes on a trip costed 3 peoples' lives, sad and pathetic at the same time. RIP three victims.
What's crazy is when they zip in & out of multiple lanes of traffic at high & crazy speeds & cut off multiple other vehicles while doing it, just to get off at an exit 2-4 miles up the road. I be like: "you could've just rode with the normal traffic flow for that, YOUR DAREDEVIL DRIVER 😑😑😡😡!!"
THIS IS INSANE People, if the weather is like this, STAY HOME. Live to drive another day. It just isn't worth it. I also want to mention that the man who took much of that video footage excused himself from his audience a few minutes in and went to see if he could help other people. God bless him and those like him.
What if you have work and if you don't get there, you get fired?? And what if that work is a career and you cannot afford to lose the $40+ you're making at said job?
this is about as severe as a very similar crash some years ago, 5 or 6 or 7 years ago on 78 in petersburg (mm 8ish) due to a white out. over 50 vehicles, 5 fatalities.
When I was taught to drive I was taught to adjust your speed to the conditions. You must be able to stop within the distance you can see. If the conditions are that bad pull into a side road and stop. Try not to stop on the side of a major freeway as other people not driving to conditions may hit you.
Never in my life have I seen or heard of so many bad things happening in the world. Covid 19 crime war weather out of wack. The world is in trouble. I wish all of this bad things would stop. The world and us people have gone to so many bad things. The world us people need a break. So sad.☹😥
I want to know who that brown SUV that was going 70 miles an hour was in low visibility and no traction. That’s just reckless driving I hope they’re still alive
You can't see 3 feet in front of you, but you all drive at 70+ miles an hour in it and are surprised when this happens. If I live to be a million years old, I will never understand how this happens with so many vehicles. When one crash happens, it's like an idiot magnet that draws other idiots into it. Can we just agree to a nationwide standard speed limit of 30mph during white out conditions, put that question on the drivers test and call it a day?
The one time they should have closed the road and they didn't. Welcome to I-81 between I-78 interchange and Scranton PA, it's always unpredictable and weather intensifies there, always has.
Too often its truck drivers driving way too fast on the interstate. They think they are invincible and got to get that load to its destination on time cuz its about $$$$. I see it all too often. Car traffic going 30 mph and big wheelers come barreling down the freeway at 60 mph, kick up snow in your car windshield, making visibility poor from your vantage point because they sit above your view and can see fine. I hug the shoulder because I see these idiots hog the road on I80 in the panhandle of Nebraska. Doesn't surprise me with the truck pile ups. Chances of getting killed in a vehicle is higher than getting killed with covid. My sympathy goes out to those who were not fortunate to live another day.
You can never blame the truck drivers because they're just doing their job. The faster they go the less likely they are going to have to operate with two log books. And you're not really speeding unless you get caught. So with this being said you're more likely to get a fine running two log books than getting a speeding ticket.
They blame it on the weather, NO, It's the idiots on the roads. I live in Maine, I've driven in those conditions MANY times and always get to my destination.
I drive 81 through the Tug Hill in NY every week and have driven through many whiteouts and the video of cars and trucks continuing to pile on was not during a whiteout.
I hit snow & fog basicly white outs myself a lot.. 1st sign low visibility slow down turn on emergency lights and start praying. When driving I wish everyone would stay alert & don't fool with your blame phone driving. Must use your phone pull off highway to a rest area or store. Side of road is very dangerous good place to be your last time beside the road.
I'll bet at least 1/2 the people yelling why didn't they slow down, themselves drive too fast in the snow/ice. Betting it will be the people who protest "not me"
Why cant they just be HONEST!!?? It was fucking SCHNIDER!! going to fast.. stupid truckers going too fast in snow. THey need a federal speed limit in snow at 25mph this is ridiculous
Too many tractor trailers on the roads. At one time this country had a complete (private) rail system. Tough to compete with a taxpayer funded US highway system. Interesting how all railroad equipment, wheels and rails are 100% recyclable.
WELL, AFTER WWII, THAT GOT CHANGED. VARIOUS BIG BUSINESS GROUPS DIDNT WANT THE RAILROAD TO CONTINUE IN THIS COUNTRY, SO THE MORE MONEY WAS PUT INTO THE AIRLINE INDUSTRY AND EISENHOWER'S PET PROJECT...THE INTERSTATE HWY SYSTEM. DONT GET ME WRING, IM GLAD WE HAVE IT, BUT IT IS DUE AN OVERHAUL ALONG WITH OUR POWER GRID. SO ALL YOU YOUNGSTERS DIG DEEP, CAUSE WE SURE NEED YALL TO GET THESE PROJECTS DONE!!
These pileups will always happen bc cars and trucks are always speeding and tailgating. Add in a bad snow squall and the result gets worse like this one.
Yeah when you wear cables it's like hella extra grip on the ground and you don't slide at all because I've used them before and they're made for black ice or driving on ice so you don't slide or slip at all you get a whole bunch of traction only bad thing is you can only go like 15 to 20 miles an hour
Almost every day I have close calls with trucks just no care in the world barreling down the highway and doesn't matter rain snow or anything 😑.... something has to be done bout trucks running 85mph in a 70.. people are dying everyday.. those trucks you saw we're traveling at 60 mph in whiteout.. SO ITS 2022 AND STILL SHIT GOES ON EVERYDAY.. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING BEFORE ITS GET WORSE..
Wish you news guys would quit saying IT WAS CAUSED BY THE SNOW FALL OR THE WEATHER. It was caused by FAILURE TO REDUCE SPEED FOR CONDITIONS. They all need to LEARN HOW TO DRIVE
@@KarenBart you're making assumptions without knowing facts. Yes, speed could be a cause.. there are alot of other factors too that you don't know. But just keep making assumptions. Speed isn't always the cause.
This isnt the first pile up like this... and 99% of the time it is discovered speed is to fast for the conditions... if cars were traveling at half that speed you wouldnt see over 50 vehicles involved. Try watching the video taken by the guy with his cell phone and just watch how fast the tow truck was going that took out his charger. Its usually a wonder that it doesnt happen more often up here in Maine
@@KarenBart so you want everyone to drive at 35 mph. Right. Ignoring the sudden weather conditions, distracted drivers are often causes of accidents, not only speed, but I guess you know all the facts in this case and every other one, so no point in arguing.
Yeah a lot of these people that drive on the snowy ass conditions don't wear cables or chains chains are for trucks and cables are for smaller vehicles that just have a two wheel drive system front or reverse I have had them and wear them when I'm in Tahoe on black ice and they work absolutely outstanding I could put them on in this condition and drive with them and I could get a lot more traction and I could stop when I want to stop so I don't hit anybody and I can actually drive and not have a whole bunch of accidents and you always want to carry those with you when you know that you're going to be going up in the snow and an extra gallon of gas you want to feel that gallon up at a gas station so when you're going throughout the mountains of of Tahoe you don't want to run out of gas
