Von Miller's playoff run this past season was the closest thing I've seen to the way L.T played, and he's still not even close. The comparison to J.J Watt isn't fair to either player since Watt plays defensive end and Taylor was an outside linebacker. He'd probably have more sacks now in the pass happy NFL. What gets lost about his greatness was the fact that he often played severely injured (torn hamstring, severe ankle sprains, etc) and was still dominant. With all due respect to Reggie White, Ray Lewis, and Mean Joe Greene, Taylor is by far the greatest defensive player ever to grace the sport of pro football.

GTRandy the average person he would be going against would be like 6'4 or 6'5 weighing 300 pounds he would be smaller, and weaker
@Straaaaaa8Up
@Straaaaaa8Up 7 лет назад
LT was an outside linebacker, not a defensive end. He wouldn't be "going against" anybody directly. He'd be playing the field and causing destruction the way all dominant linebackers do. LT was 6'3" and 240. Yes, at that time he was abnormally big and fast and strong. But don't be a simpleton please... do your homework. Von Miller was this past season's Superbowl MVP and Von is 6'3" and 250. Bigger? No. Stronger? No... look at the film... LT man-handled offensive lineman like rag-dolls. Think for a moment... we're only talking 20 years, not 100's! Humans haven't evolved that much in that time. LT was also a speed demon at that position... he'd run around all the supposed 300 lb. players you think would handle him. You're uncommonly ignorant for someone commenting on this subject. Your logic is lacking, your analysis is pitiful... please don't disgrace the rest of us with your insignificant comments any further.
@UncleClaudeSportsandThangs
@UncleClaudeSportsandThangs 7 лет назад
Russ Morey To your point (which is why I didn't reply to the comments they made), in his final season against the Great Wall of Dallas, all of whom were 300 lbs and up, LT literally shovel Kevin Googan, the left guard, backwards into Aikman recording on of 2 sacks he would have on the day. Taylor revolutionized the outside linebacker position and for those that said all he did was pass rush, look at the 1983 Thanksgiving game against the Lions and his iconic interception and return for a touchdown. I'm one of those who feel that the greats would be great in any era. Of course we can speculate about things (Ruth not facing Black and Latino players, not his fault of course, but a fair point is a good example) but LT would be just as dominant in today's NFL.

When you listen to not only his head coach but other head coaches, hall of fame head coaches. They say the same thing. He changed the way the game was played. No one had ever witnessed such athleticism at the linebacker position. Not just that he had great football instincts. He is the last defensive player and the only linebacker to win the N.F.L's regular season M.V.P award. There have been some great players since his time. Michael Strahan even said that he was more proud of breaking L.T's sack record than breaking the regular season sack record held by Mark Gastineau.

i never saw Jim Brown play except for old films but i was in Giant stadium for ALL of LT's career and i saw enough of Jerry Rice to be very familiar w/his skill set and impact. My dad played for Syracuse and watched Jim Brown's whole career. He says LT's the best football player he's ever seen w/Brown a close second. Lt's easily the best football player I've ever seen as well. I have high regard for Rice and believe he's easily in the top 10 but i think he benefitted greatly from having Joe Montana as his QB for most of his career. I think w/a lesser QB his career numbers would be a lot more modest (but still great). Montana had the best timing of any QB I've ever seen. The way he seemed to hit Rice and John Taylor in perfect stride every time was uncanny. I think that added greatly to Rice's staggering TD and yards after catch stats. If he has to slow down or come back for a lot of those catches they become 10 yard gains instead of 90 yard TDs. LT, on the other hand, was gonna be a one man wrecking crew regardless of who he played for. His accomplishments were his alone and relied on no one else to make them. He was routinely double and triple teamed and still made the play. His combo of speed, strength and relentless ferocity has never been approached. His ability to shed the blocker and close on the QB in what seemed like a nanosecond was ungodly. This is why he caused so many fumbles. QB's didn't even have time to tuck the ball and brace for the hit let alone try to avoid the sack. He was like human dynamite: he'd charge the pocket and bodies and footballs would just fly all over the place. He'd toss away 300 lb lineman like they were cheerleaders. I've never seen anyone like him and, considering its been 23 years since he retired, i doubt i ever will.

For everyone who mentions JJ Watt, Khalil Mack and Von Miller just look at this guys credentials. 10x pro bowler, 10 time 1st team all pro, 3 time defensive player of the year and NFL MVP. When those guys accomplish that then you can bring them up in the same sentence. And for all of you that don’t think he could play in today’s game go look at some more of his highlight videos. All of his hits are clean. He’s not a John Lynch who headhunted with every tackle. He wasn’t just a pass rusher either. He was great against the run. Watch his run stopping and goal line defense videos. Running backs didn’t jump over the line on the goal line against LT. He would hammer them. I don’t care how big offensive linemen are now. He was TRIPLE TEAMED on a regular basis and still wreaked havoc. GOAT

As intense as this guy was, he was never dirty. I've never seen a man get to the quarterback as much as LT and set them on the ground so softly. Even that catastrophic hit on Theisman was purely accidental.

I am a 49ers fan and I watched (and loved/worshipped) Montana, Rice and Young, but in terms of the essence of football and the greatest exponent of it, it's LT for me. There will never be another.

@@Crisisbiker I'm a Ny'er. So yes he's the best defensive player ever. But Jerry Rice is the best offensive player ever. That guy was a trained conditioned super athlete. Always in shape. LT barely practiced.He slept during film sessions. He didn't really comply to the structure of a called play. He rushed in Man to man or drop back coverage. 😂 And he was using hard drugs at the time. Crazy how naturally good he was.

When you change the way a game is played you should be the greatest. He literally made the tackle position of the most important positions of all time. He made 3-4 outside linebacker one the most seek out player for a draft if you have a 3-4 defense. He changed the game. He's the greatest of all time. Forget greatest defensive player of all time, for someone to change the game and the way you coach, draft and play, you are the greatest ever

LT turned around one of the worst franchises at that point. The Giants stunk from 64-81 w/ zero playoff appearances. Greatest defensive player I've seen. He changed the way defense is played - after him a lot of teams drafted players like Pat Swilling, Andre Tippet, etc., and used them the same way the Giants used LT.

Oh yes Lawrence Taylor; as a Cowboy "fanatic" I had a love hate relationship. First I loved his approach to the game, his speed and knowledge where frightening. When an offensive line has to game plan an alter their scheme you quickly free up another player to threaten your QB. His only drawback is that he didn't play for the Cowboys. 🤣

LT. Last of the throwbacks. Like Jack Youngblood, who broke his leg in a playoff game for the LA Rams. He taped it up, went back in and they won.
