• PLEASE NOTE: these are not patterns for clothes and garments included in the Membership
• Instruction sheets are a step-by-step written instruction on how I drafted this or that project, so that you can follow along. Instruction Sheets are available as a back catalogue, but there are no new Instruction sheets for projects starting with July 2022.
• The templates are ONLY for the small projects, like a basket, or coaster, or towel wrap and etc.
• I have also created sewing reference sheets and practice sheets, as well as sketches that you can use and some small-scale garment parts that you can use to practice "slash and spread" techniques and dart manipulations. Instruction sheets are focused on the drafting process and less on the sewing sequence as that is shown in the video. Sewing steps can be sometimes written out, and sometimes referenced back to the original video.

Upcycling was the main reason I wanted to learn to sew. I’ve been fascinated by sustainability in fashion for years. I find so much relaxation and stress-relief in the creativity of taking a pre-existing garment and turning it into something else! 🥳

I was taught basic sewing at school as a youngster, later I made a lot of my own clothes and even coats. Over the years I got so busy with work and so many other things, that my sewing habits mostly ended up exclusively invested in: sewing my own curtains and upholstery covers, towels, sheets, duvet covers, cushion covers etc. I had forgotten all about the pleasure of reimagining or inventing new from old and thrifted pieces, or up-cycling my own clothes, so thank you dearest lady for reminding me.

It is a wonderful feeling to adjust a top so that you will wear it. I made a "no pattern linen top" a couple of years ago. The cap sleeve was just too short for me. I had a little fabric, so I added a cuff. I really like it now and have already worn it more this summer than the last two years. Thanks for another great video!

You inspired me to upcycle my clothes ages ago! I realized I could do anything I wanted to them! So I took a lot of this things I wasn't wearing, figured out WHY and fixed it. One the sleeves were too short. Another dress had long sleeve but was too short. I took that dress, took the sleeves out, cut the sleeves out of the first dress and replaced them. that dress was also too short so I took the butchered dress and cut strips of it and added it to the first dress. Turned out GREAT! and from there I have been fixing all my things so I can wear them. One blouse was too clingy so I added a gusset to both sides and now it fits. Would never have tried that before. Thank you so much!!!

Oh wow, that is sew AMAZING :) Yes, we can do ANYTHING and re-imagine our clothes and I love your approach, understanding WHY we like/dislike or don't wear something is super important for the future sewing/shopping as well. And once you know your "why" you also know what to fix! That is great, loved reading your story!

Unfortunately over here thrift/charity shops charge almost brand new retail prices, that's another reason fast fashion is so popular because it's cheap and affordable. I wear my clothes until they literally fall apart, but my son grows so quick, so I'm always donating good quality clothes and I repair what I can. When my son was little I'd remake the legs of my dad's old jeans into new ones for him for playgroup etc.

I was in a thrift shop yesterday for the first time. The used blouses were marked $4.75. The cashier said all blouses are $1.00. I didn't have a project in mind, but I have to consider the quality of the fabric. I have so many fabric scraps at home to use up first.

I’ve been thrifting since I was a teenager and made $0.50 an hour babysitting. I love upcycling. Plus, fabric is so expensive. Used to be able to make a dress for $3-5 dollars, including fabric and buttons or zipper. Now it’s cheaper to buy clothes, but the quality is awful. It’s very wise to learn how to sew. While all three items were very creative, the dress has to be my favorite. 😍 I hope to see more videos like this in the future. I watch another RU-vidr, MEE YA, who upcycles men’s t-shirts and shirts, but I failed my first time because the instructions aren’t in the video, so there’s some guesswork involved. $2 t-shirt. Live and lean 😊 I upcycle jeans and make tote bags, zippered bags, etc. I upcycle T-shirt remnants and make children’s clothing and dog toys, from T-shirt quilts. I make various quilts too. I’m trying to take regular patterns and alter them to make my daughter maternity tops. I’m always looking on RU-vid and Pinterest for inspiration. I haven’t upcycled too many of my shirts because I’ve gained weight and don’t like the look of a gusset on the sides. I might try doing an upcycled tunic. Thank you for your channel and all the work you do!

A possibility would be to add a center panel like lace or some textured version in the front. Good luck! I just added a gusset to shorts I am making out of an old sheet. I top stitched the gusseted sides to make them look "athletic ".

@@lisafeldmann9863 I like panels in jeans and shorts. They look cute that way, but I can’t seem to find something cute to add to my “too’ tight shirts. Thanks for the tip!
@Jen-CelticWarrior

@@laurametzger851 , I made a gray, crew neck sweatshirt into a jacket by adding a panel of fleece into the side seams to make it bigger, then I used the same fleece to make a hood. I also added a front, full-length zipper. Is the side panel concept the same thing as a gusset like you mentioned? Or could come cute fabric be used for the panels? I’m new at this up cycling stuff, so please forgive my ignorance!😄
@laurametzger851
@laurametzger851 2 года назад
@@Jen-CelticWarrior a gusset is usually a triangular piece of fabric inserted between two other pieces of fabric to widen the space. A panel would be different than a gusset. I’m intrigued by your description. I wish we were able to share pix here.

Love all three projects. You could definitely add to the sustainability of the little dress by making a matching bandana/scrunchie/ accessory with the offcuts. Upcycling is what got me back into sewing. Funny how once you sew your own clothes, you get picky. I love pockets and am reluctant to wear anything that doesn't have them. 3/4 sleeves are my preference. I totally got how you needed/wanted sleeves on the one blouse and a better fit on the other. Sewing is a super power. You should be able to wear what you want exactly how you want it. Thanks for the video. as always, I enjoyed it.

The up cycles are fantastic, especially the little girl's dress. I just bought a pure silk 1980's Princess Diana style wedding gown for $60 with a 20% off coupon. I plan to carefully take it apart and dye some of it to make either a blouse or jacket. When my daughter was in 8th grade she had a cute white bolero-type jacket. It was very plain, but fit her well. She wanted it to have more pizzaz. I change the one large white button for a big silver one and trimmed the collar in a string of silver sequins. Let me tell you, she her friends loved the new look that only cost a few dollars.

All three projects were terrific! I think the blouse your mom gave you was really improved by eliminating the contrasting bias tape and letting the material shine. And the dress for your daughter! Super-cute! Loved it with the white trim and snazzy pockets!! I've done some upcycling / repurposing. I made a winter hood and bicycle hand-warmers from a quilted vest that really made winter bicycle commuting much better! And I changed some features on a thrift store dress that I bought for a wedding when I really had no money to spend and didn't have a wedding-appropriate dress that fit. I was pleased with it. I really like that you showed upcycling projects that ranged from small changes to entirely new garments. Upcycles on youtube are often big "transformations," but I like thinking that some items might just need an adjustment to make them more friendly to wear. Thank you!

Alisa, I love your channel. I’ve been sewing for many years even though I’ve never really had the time to do so. I loved making clothes for my children, as they grew up especially a lot of fun doing do for my only daughter, but sewing for myself always turned out to be a massive disappointment because of poor fit or bad judgement of suitable style or a combination of both. Recently I moved to Singapore and left my sewing machines back home… some beautiful Bernina’s. Here in Singapore I have lots of spare time, and lots of clothes I can’t wear because IT SOOOO HOT AND HUMID 🥵and… my clothes don’t fit any more because I walk everywhere and have changed shape. I’ve never been confident enough to repurpose or do big alterations to any ready to wear garments apart from taking up a hem… but you inspired me. So, I purchased a machine (the same Bernette you have) and in a week, I have upcycled 5 garments that I had not worn in two years. Thank you so much for the motivation, courage and confidence to give it a go. I’m so happy with the results and very proud of myself. It’s very satisfying to go through the journey and end up with something useful and wearable, from something completely useless. Thanks to you. You really do have a wonderful talent and generosity to share your passion with others the way you do. Your passion is infectious . Thank you ❤

@0:40, cute pants, cute dress. Yes I recycle, but I never know what I'm going to have. Hair bands? to hold my hair when I shower or wash my face? Dolly clothes. Kids clothes. Shorts, Skirts,, remove/modify sleeves. The list goes on. I should be more creative. Oh, and ART.

I like up-cycling a mans shirt Maybe just changing out the collar bands or cuffs . Also remaking women's tops that are too long or remaking from a dress .Haven't bought any new clothes in over 3 years now. I have a sleeveless dress I no longer wear so your vid inspired me to look at that next

I think from 2 years ago - that's when I made this shirt and I love it, juts never wore it... The dress for my little one is a better use :) I still have 1 yd left of it.

You can make a lot of small projects from small fabric pieces, like sleeves. Here's a full playlist for your inspiration - ru-vid.com/group/PLTQAETBWbJdii30W2wZ5dJfUHSnXk-C8q

Hi. I am new to your channel and find it very inspiring. I am wondering what coverstitch machine you are using? Is it easy to thread? First time hearing of a coverstitch.

I have a black cotton wrap dress that I like but never wear. There's a lot of fabric there. Hmmm....

Upcycling is odd like building a house backwards. I often advise beginners to sew from a few patterns first or come to your channel. It's easier to upcycle if you know how things are made. Older now I prefer at least elbow length sleeves. I buy teen tops at thrift. Often have cute lace, velvet etc. Even a small you can get new sleeves out of front and back of top. You only need to trace the cap then decide sleeve width. I often use the tshirt hem as end of sleeve and measure up from there.

I would redo the hem just because it looks a little bit wonky 🙈

It is the original hem from the RTW garment and when you lay it flat or wear it - it is fine.

What if you had cut out the sleeves with the stripes running vertically?
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity 2 года назад
I pinned in that piece of fabric every way possible and vertical stripes did not speak to me and I think there wasn't enough fabric to cut out 2 that way.

Oh, I also made a circle sleeve from white chiffon (I did not show this int he video) just to see how it would look - ah, looked out of place... but I am happy with these ones :)
