3 methods to identify internal control weaknesses 

I normally would identify significant processes then plot a flowchart upon client inquiry to track the flow of data through main transactions, then i would see what sort of controls they have set and add what could go wrongs in order to see the weaknesses in each control

In the quality arena we use risk assessment models to determine Process Risk and the need for control based upon Severity, Detection and Occurrence. The same approach could be deployed relative to financial controls, especially SOX. Using the tool could provide a "Risk Priority Number" or RPN as we refer to it. which would make it easy to identify those key areas which are most likely to present financial issues relative to material misstatement. In a 500 million dollar inventory for instance, Inventorying paper gaskets worth $70.00 us might not be relevant at all to the financial statement. However I have witnessed, auditors desire the counting of even trite volumes of inventory regardless of the severity of the risk occurring, simply because they don't understand RPN calculation.
