The video titled "How to Improve Your Listening Skills" focuses on the significance of enhancing listening abilities to improve language learning and speaking skills. The presenter introduces three listening methods, drawing from personal experiences in language acquisition.
Passive Listening - "Listen like a baby"
The speaker emphasizes the importance of initially exposing oneself to a new language through passive listening, similar to how infants experience language as a continuous stream of sounds. This method involves immersing oneself in the language's rhythm and cadence, without worrying about full comprehension. The speaker shares personal experiences, such as listening to diverse languages on a shortwave radio during childhood, and highlights the role of music in appreciating the beauty of a language.
Active Listening - "Adult-Powered Learning"
Active listening involves concentrating on understanding the language consciously. The presenter argues that adults, with well-developed cognitive abilities, can leverage their analytical skills and prior knowledge to understand language structures more consciously. Various online resources, including RU-vid and language learning tools like the LANGUAGE REACTOR EXTENSION, are suggested. The presenter provides a structured approach to active listening, including watching without subtitles, watching with subtitles, pausing and repeating, taking notes, and periodic review.
Dual Language Books with Audio
The speaker introduces dual language books with audio as the most effective method for improving listening comprehension. The benefits include cognitive engagement, associative learning, personalization of language, and a continuous stream of comprehensible input. The presenter shares personal experiences and provides suggestions for studying, such as shadowing, memorization, and dictation.
Access to Materials
The presenter provides links to materials for practice in English, Italian, and Chinese, including pop-up links to specific chapters and languages. The speaker encourages viewers to explore their memoir, "A Life in 30
Languages," available in various dual language editions.
The video concludes with a motivational message, highlighting language learning as a journey of discovering new knowledge, culture, and personal growth. The presenter acknowledges the challenges of language learning but encourages viewers to maintain passion and perseverance, emphasizing that the rewards are worth the effort.

This is excellent. A few months ago I discovered reading while listening, and that has massively improved my French comprehension such that I can understand podcasts for natives and also some films. Before that I was just listening, and progress was much slower. Listening while reading trains the brain to recognise words. I’m getting a bit stuck with German (beginner A2). I find it much harder than French, as it is much more alien and less fluid. I have been doing mainly exercises i.e. translate back and forth, but progress has been slow. I recently started doing a lot more listening, both with and without a transcript. I’m pleased to see that you recommend this approach, so I hope progress might improve.

It is one of the most powerful methods so just keep at it for German

How to this method in details? should i listen first then repeat or repeat while the narrator speaks ?
@Jesojojeso

How can you listen while you're reading aloud?
@StillAliveAndKicking_
@StillAliveAndKicking_ 6 месяцев назад
@@Jesojojeso You don’t read aloud when listening. Just follow the transcript while listening. For German and French, I sometimes read the transcript, then read and listen simultaneously, then just listen. Do this many times for a given recording over a few days, weeks or months. I don’t know if there is any precise method. But make sure the input is appropriate for your level.

I agree, I love dual language books too. And especially the combination between reading and listening. I also do writing whilst listening, meaning copying a given text for which I have audio. Or writing down from memory as you said, trying to memorise whole poems or other short texts, lyrics of songs.Handwriting a lot makes me retrieving and checking if I remembered correctly. And forme it isa fun activity which motivates me.

It was interesting to hear the 3 methods and yes. I also agree that one can binge watch to fluency in the targeted language, one method that I also like to do for fun, is to imitate how one is speaking the language, for example the news readers in spanish, so when I hear them. I try to follow along and speak with the same speed and intonation.

Thank you for another excellent video! Concerning dual-language books, I have several of them, but they never explain how to best use them. Audio aside, should you read through the book in the target language first and then check comprehension by reading in your native language? Or should you read it in your native language first so that you know what’s going on in the story before attempting the target language? Also, should you read the whole book through or go a chapter at a time? Or a paragraph at a time? Thank you again!
@polyglotdreams
@polyglotdreams 6 месяцев назад
The answers to these questions all depend on your level in the language. If you can read in the target language and understand 90% then go ahead and read the whole chapter and check back on what you did not afterwards. Otherwise I would compare paragraph by paragraph until you understand it well. Repeatedly reading it produces the most learning.

great video intresting for me I d like to know how many time should i repeat during listening frensh , english,spanish and italian language per day? should I repeat more than 50 time per each language or what should I do? because it will take time and thanks for responding sir.

Thanks... that depends on which language you want to prioritize and how much time you can dedicate to doing it every day. The amount of time for each language doesn’t have to be equal, necessarily

I don't know but this is a wrong way to learn a language, cuz as we know the brain focuses on one thing (majority of the time, it focus on the easy thing) so mind focus on reading more than listening, cuz it finds it easy for him.

Setelah fasih/lancar, lirik lagu di atas + akhiran huruf H, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, & Ng (HaKila MoNa PaRaSiTaNG). contoh : H --> ah ih uh e1h eh e3h oh s/d nyah nyih nyuh nye1h nyeh nye3h nyoh Dan seterusnya Bila lirik di atas dikuasai dgn lancar/fasih, Anda setidaknya sudah menguasai > 95% suku kata dalam bahasa Indonesia.. Semoga Bermanfaat !!! Tahukah Anda, suku kata "wor" pada kata wortel cuma satu-satunya suku kata dalam bahasa Indonesia..😁😁😁😁
