Edit: *_as a reply pointed out, both in the teaser, and the trailer you play as Carl, so it is pretty likely you do infact play as Carl in this._* For anybody wondering, I believe you don't play as Carl, but Groovy was dressed up as him during the recording, and it also seems Groovy replaces Carl in this, as in the corner of the screen at the start, you can see Groovy say "A key!" "Give me the freaking key!", so who knows, you could play as Carl in this, though I kind of doubt it, as it removes the player from the story entirely. Either way I'm super excited to play this!
