The BEST vs WORST Supplements for Muscle Growth & Health

The supplements industry has exploded, reaching almost $400 billion dollars just last year. But how much of the bodybuilding supplements industry is a scam? Protein powder, creatine, multivitamins, athletics greens, BCAA's, fat burners, etc. What gym supplements actually work and what doesn't? Today I’m testing the most popular workout supplements, comparing their claims against real scientific data. I’ll show you what scams to avoid and which gym supplements research says you should use instead. Starting with one that may come as a surprise … creatine.
Click below for a proven, step-by-step training and nutrition plan to get you in the best shape of your life:

Americans alone consume well over 4 million kg of creatine yearly. But many companies have been taking advantage of this trend. Up to 30% of people naturally have high levels of creatine, which is why about 1 in 4 don’t see any performance benefits from it. But that’s only part of the story.
Often, companies selling workout supplements use complex terms on their creatine products to impress or even confuse buyers, and make their products seem a lot better than they actually are. Then, they bump up the price, and people think it “must be better”. But many of these expensive creatine forms are less effective than creatine monohydrate. And a lot of times they aren’t tested for safety either! So, does this mean you should stop taking creatine? Not necessarily.
But to avoid the gym supplements scams, you’ve gotta make sure you’re picking the right kind. For now, research has consistently shown that just plain old creatine monohydrate is not only the safest and most effective, it’s also the cheapest. Just try to get one that’s been third-party lab tested so you can be sure of what you’re actually consuming.
BCAA supplements may be one of the oldest scams in bodybuilding. BCAAs only contain 3 amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. So, providing your body with too many BCAAs might actually block other amino acids from being used, potentially hurting muscle recovery and growth.
But I know you might be wondering: if this research on BCAA’s is 10 years old, why do top brands still sell them as bodybuilding supplements? Well, that’s exactly why. Because they sell. That said, here’s a pro-tip: if you do want to supplement amino acids, EAAs, or essential amino acids, are a much better option. EAAs include 9 of the most important amino acids rather than 3. And they can be especially useful for vegetarians or those who like to work out fasted. But here’s how I see it. If you eat well and get enough protein, neither BCAAs or EAAs are very likely to help much. And that actually brings us to the last scam to watch out for, and the latest supplement craze taking over the internet.
Green supplements are supposedly an easy way to get your fruits and veggies in without having to chop, blend, or cook anything. But there’s been little to no evidence supporting green powders’ supposed health benefits. They also make use of deceptive nutrition labeling practices, such as the use of unregulated terms like “superfoods” and stuffing the product with water-soluble nutrients, to make them sound better than they actually are.
Some of you might now be thinking “green supplements are better because they’re sourced from whole foods”. While that is true, research has yet to show this makes any difference. Even if you “extract” the nutrients from whole foods, you still lose a lot of what makes them so good for you in the first place. Because of this, as of 2018 the Public Health of England declared that greens powders do not count towards your “5-servings-a-day.” of fruits and veggies. And that’s part of the problem. Because of how green powders are marketed, many people think they can rely on these supplements instead of eating real food. Whereas eating enough servings of fruits and vegetables a day has tons of strong evidence showing it improves health, body composition, gut health, digestion, longevity, and pretty much everything else you can think of.
So while it’s possible a greens powder may provide a small benefit for those who eat very little fruits and vegetables, it’s not a replacement. And it’s definitely a lot more pricey than a simple multivitamin.

BCAA is better than creatine. BCAA just works different. BCAA is essential for muscle recovery, not for make power of your workout. If you wanted to get a power. Consume PWO BCAA 5g, carbs, fish oil 1g, calcium lactate 500mg , and to convert carbs to energy you need vitamin B5 as calcium pantothenate 500mg. Vitamin B5 comes to replace creatine. Both claim can make energy. But you should try first. Actually i also consume vitamin B1 but it has to consume 1 hour after PWO. Because vitamin B1 get energy from uric acid. Uric acid formed when your body finished synthesize protein and fatty acid.

It sounds bizarre i know you would think cod liver oil would be beneficial for a joint condition... but it actually makes the condition worse. @jackoverton8343

It's a emotional diet not a health one. Its your choice. The antinutirents can be a concern but as long as you don't have spinach or something similar as staple in in your diet then you're probably fine. I'd be more concerned a out pesticides primarily on wheat because they use roundup as a desiccant right before harvest. The problem though is you have no source of B12 and plants also have no natural vitamin A but rather beta carotene which a significant portion of the population have such horrible conversion rates they'll never have enough. There are like 10+ other vitamin and minerals you will become deficient in over a year or so and then you'll start feeling horrible and begin aging faster, getting sick often, brittle bones ect ect. Even taking all the supplements you run into same issues with poor absorption from synthetics or improper forms. Can it be done? For someone with the right genes and ancestral background perhaps, but you need to be taking many HIGH quality vitamins which are expensive and I'd recommend b12 shots too. For a decent amount of the population no matter how many vitamins you take and extensive nutrient tracking you'll still never meet your needs. Our genes are made for meat its just how it is,prior to paste 11k years of farming we were apex predators primarily eating meat. You can eat a steak and eggs and get nearly every nutrient you need. I have empathy for the animals too, i shell out extra cash for local humane farms instead. Another truth is veganim also kills billions of animals and quadrillion insects with pesticide, traps, runoff in waterways, harvester blades, crop protection, secondary poisoning to predators such as birds and cats. I choose the native american approach and thank the animal for providing and don't waste it. "Death by violence, death by cold, death by starvation - they are the normal endings of the stately creatures of the wilderness. The sentimentalists who prattle about the peaceful life of nature do not realize its utter mercilessness." - Theodore Roosevelt

take b12, take vit D, Iodine (may not get enough in food) (supplements) and figure out what your body needs and eat foods that have it, it's simple and easy to do. cronometer is a good source of info (finding out names of nutrients needed), if a person talks about anti nutrients be skeptical like with anything in life.

11 Year Vegan here. I'd recommend Vit B12 and D. Iodine is easy to consume if you cook with iodized salt, but there's iodine drops that are cheap and last forever. Hemp/Brown Rice/Pea Protein powder will be good. Omegas/Healthy fats can come from unsalted nuts, seeds, plant milks and virgin olive oil. Also vegans get hardly any Creatine which meat has. Otherwise fruits, veggies, nuts, whole grains, plant oils and you're good to go. 💪🥦

NSF-certified supplements are a smart choice for several reasons: Safety and Quality Assurance: NSF certification ensures that the supplement has been tested for harmful contaminants and meets rigorous quality standards. Label Accuracy: Supplements with NSF certification are verified to contain the ingredients listed on the label in the amounts specified, reducing the risk of adulteration or mislabeling. Third-Party Testing: NSF certification involves independent, third-party testing, providing an additional layer of trust and transparency. Compliance with Regulations: NSF-certified supplements comply with regulatory standards, which can be especially important for athletes and individuals subject to strict anti-doping regulations. Consumer Trust: The NSF mark is widely recognized and trusted by consumers, healthcare providers, and organizations, providing confidence in the product’s safety and efficacy. Using NSF-certified supplements helps ensure that you are getting a product that is both safe and effective, minimizing the risks associated with unverified or low-quality supplements.

My experience with creatine (started ~3 weeks ago) is that I do feel noticeably better in general. I feel less tired. Strength and recovery: I dunno. My recovery of starting heavy deadlifts took about a week (I'm 40) and that wasn't short, usually my recovery takes 3 days or so. More strength? Maybe yes, I do Bodypump and the exercises are easier. But I could just have become stronger naturally. Then again, I had plateaud for the past year (I do Bodypump 2x a week.) I'll definitely follow the science :) Awesome work on this video and please keep sharing new findings!

I applaud you for using words like scam and lie, and for naming products. The public deserves facts, not wiggle words. I also don’t understand people who say they can’t afford to eat healthy. (Especially people who will buy a five dollar cup of coffee.) They need to stop going to high-end grocery stores where, yes, everything is overpriced.

Unfortunately, even veggies and cheap protein foods like chicken, tofu and fish sold on low-end grocery stores and markets in my country are expensive as hell (thanks Anwar for raising the diesel prices). In addition to Ringgit Malaysia that kept plummeting and plummeting, low wages among worker-class families and the unhealthy food choices are now becoming easier to get because we're lazy to cook at home XD So yeah, Malaysia is doomed with fat and unhealthy people around us. Even kids.

For those multi vitamin and green supplements you should mention that there are some Vitamins (A,D,E,K) that can intoxicate you longterm if you take to much. Taking more than 100% of them every day CAN (doesn´t have to if you´re lucky) be dangerous

Well done Jeremy, you could not be more correct but sadly many young guys even when solid evidence as you have given here in your RU-vid - will still buy this rubbish. Years ago when becoming a retrained Maths & Science Teacher which required me to teach GCSE Biology, I had to do a great deal of studying to do my pupils' justice for their final exams, as such I learnt that the simple wise choice of good foods gave you all the supplements needed to maintain good muscles. Over the years and now 71 I am no hulk but according to several doctors, physio and massage therapists I have 'excellent' muscles and bone structure due to my healthy diet and regular exercise. And in all my life, I have NEVER ever bought or drunk any protein powder drink.

@@brunodangelo1146, I wasn’t disagreeing with anything you said, in case you thought I was. And yes, I agree. Those that simply “can’t do it” would fall under the “lacking intelligence” spectrum in most cases. Oh well, natural selection is a thing. However, there are a lot of other issues with nutrition as a whole in our country. It’s almost like they want only a select few to be able to afford to “eat healthy” versus the trash being the cheaper alternative. It’s a funny world we live in.

@@brunodangelo1146, well, in America it’s unfortunately the well off individuals that can eat healthy every single meal. Most can’t and it’s sad to see. That's why Im glad in my country and generally in Europe there is a lot of law regulations about the food/supplements that are protecting us from getting scammed. For example If the product says there is zero sugar in it, you know that indeed there is no sugar. There is a whole page of laws written for the whole EU about using "marketing" names etc on food products and usually companies are aware of how hard it is to "lie" to their consumer... This is what US should also have.
