I have a new video dedicated to SURVEY SCIENCE in UXR (and how to be good at surveys as a qualitative UX researcher). Watch now: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GZqn1wFPI64.html
So helpful to know the various labels/ names one type of method can be called!.. I personally would love a video going into detail about what tools you use for creating UXR Surveys and how you determine what kind of survey you are going to use for a specific research project. Love your channel!
Aona, this was a great video. I watch it when I was on a treadmill last night. Now, I watched it again to take notes. Actually, I spend learning about UX every day alongside my job hunting. So, now I plan to learn different layers of these methods as you said.. Thank you SO SO MUCH for preparing amazing and insightful content for FREE. I am an international student here and I am so proud of you that you made it as an international student as well.... :)
Hey Aona, I just wanted to say this was a really great video, you were concise, informative and generous with your advice. Thank you! I'm a market researcher but I have seen increasing demand from clients to understand CX, UX and MR and how they intersect and I'm particularly interested in upskilling/learning more about UXR as I feel there's a lot of similarities in the skillset between the two professions. Thanks again! 😊
Thank you Aona, for the Insightful videos. Please do a video on how to improve our ability to conduct on each of the methodologies you mentioned. Thank you
Not gonna lie - I had to watch this video a few times and deeply google quite a bit of the vernacular you used when describing the background of the 3 types - It was very humbling knowing how high level my actual knowledge of these 3 types is vs. how the 3 types can be broken down into individual skills. This channel has given me everything I need to roadmap my own personal development as a new up-and-coming UXR. Background: I've been in the UX world as a self-taught generalist from the east coast, and I'm aiming to become a specialist in UXR. Your channel is one of the most important resources I've come across to help me get there. You're doing great work, Aona! Thanks again!
Thanks for this! Though I haven't interviewed a ton of users, I have done over a hundred interviews for my podcast where I talk with high-profile strangers and ask them pretty vulnerable questions that they go deep with me on! I love podcasting for this reason - it is like an IDI. It's like one of my favorite things to do in life so this makes me more excited to go the direction of UXR after my PhD. I also worked at Qualtrics for a time and have a ton of experience in survey design. I helped dozens of researchers in both academia and business to design and set up their surveys and I have done a few of these in my grad program too. I just need to strengthen my Usability Testing and stats skills. This is super helpful stuff. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
and by the way, I was literally starting from the first video you posted, and go through them one by one. Took me two hours to get here, I think i am gonna take a break and continue tomorrow. Thanks a lot for making these videos!!!
I actually believe I can be better at usability interviews so something I do is on the side I participate in usability studies. This helps me see what I can do better in my interviews but also get perspective of the people joining my studies.
Aona my dear, you have been incredible helpful and organized in the way you segmented all your different videos and its content. Thank you for sharing your insights with us.
Thank you Aona, you videos are great, the way you give material, explain, chew it for me as for the beginner. I really like it, thank you, I am making notes 😊, bought a notebook dedicated to your channel.
Hi, aona! I just want to say I appreciate this video. I'm a senior in college studying mass communications and a little far in to change my major at the last minute (despite not being particularly passionate about my major anymore), but I heard about UXR and UX Writing and decided to start researching. This video is helpful in breaking down some methods for me and I'm legitimately about to just look at all of your videos to see how I can successfully transition. Thank you so much!!
Thanks so much for this video! Would love to learn more about regression and conjoint analyses methods when you have time to make another video :) Loving your channel!
This is crazy helpful, thank you!! It’s nice to know that the foundations of UXR are used by advanced researchers - just more deeply and with more skill, it seems. I’m excited to practice variants of each method ^-^ I’m curious: do you have any tips/resources to practice quantitative data analysis as applicable to UXR, besides grad school? Or would it be unhelpful to spend time learning beyond the basics of correlations/regressions?
I think it’s always worth learning about quant analysis if you’ve got time and passion - you might not see an immediate impact or application of those knowledge if you are not hired as a quantitativeUXR. But it will come in handy when “the time” comes! (I know, this sounds like I’m saying nothing - but those moments do come! And when they come, you’ll feel so smart because you know all about it already 😂) that said, if your goal is to become a mixed-method UXR who leans towards qual more, then choose your practice wisely - no need to get into the weeds of programming languages, doing statistical modeling (if you already know how to do it then nvm!), I think in-depth understanding of survey methodology and some knowledge around applied statistics, plus 1 tool (bonus point) you can use to perform analysis (eg SAS/SPSS/R) is more than enough
@@AonaTalks Wow, thanks so much for the detailed tips! Makes a lot of sense, too: as a mixed methods UXR, it definitely seems wise to have a solid foundation in surveys and the qual methods you talked about, then choose one stats tool to be able to use when the time comes. Thanks again!!
@@AonaTalks I was hoping to learn more about UX researcher's responsibility of taking care of users' mental health or protecting vulnerable populations data when conducting a user research.
As a UXR yourself, how much percentage of your time is spent on Adobe / Figma on a day-to-day basis? Asking as someone who is very new to design software and finds it difficult to learn.
I think survey and quantitative analysis with the survey data are two different things that go hand in hand but the learning curve for both of em is different. Survey questions and scales might be contextual and versatile (like the semi-structured question) but the quantitative analysis methods are fixed (Once you know how to apply them, it's kind of the same thing over various data). I'm naive but correct me if I'm wrong. I think this is why the mixed method approach is beautiful where qualitative and quantitative data go hand in hand.
this was helpful but I think I jumped the gun, I'm still on week 3 of my Ux certificate and this was a beautiful reminder that patience is key :'D . I will be re- watching once I hit that stage of learning. I'm heavily into UX design, and I strongly feel that i will more than likely become a T-shaped designer since I have so much interest in freelance.
Hi! I just want to say I love your content. I am also a Chinese and have been working as a UX Researcher in the US for two years now. My English is not as good as yours so sometimes I found myself hard to build trust and connection with the participants. I wonder if could share any tips to improve English and ways to build rapport with the interviewees? Thank you!
@@AonaTalks yea 1) How to conduct Secondary Research for personal projects (building an app form scratch). 2) What is Domain Research and Literature Review?
Hi Aona, thank you for creating a very concise video. May I ask what you completed your master’s degree on and if your master’s was crucial in getting your first UX research job?
Thank you for your question! I've shared my whole journey of getting into UXR in this video (incl grad school, internships, and more): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LysMT2jq3-4.html Make sure to check it out :)
Love the tips Aona! But at the same time those survey analysis sounds so technical to me. Could you suggesting some resources to improve survey research skills? Like what’s conjoint analysis even 😂😂😂
I have to say survey methodology is such a massive universe (I only hold maybe 1% the knowledge) and I know some seasoned market researchers who have been advancing their survey skills for their whole career and still lots more to explore. Do not feel stressed out about it too much. My fav book on survey methodology (is also my textbook from grad school) is QUANTITATIVE Research Methods For Communications (I don’t read it page by page, mostly use it as a resource to go to whenever I have a specific question). I would recommend to take an online specialization class in survey methodology or applied statistics if you want to go more in-depth.
Is it enough to have participated in research projects with professors? What other involvement do you recommend as someone in undergrad looking for UXR internship roles?
Thank you so much for making these great videos Aona!!! It is really inspiring to watch your videos and go through your UXR journey! mine is very much alike to yours, college in china, master in UK though, and now do UXR in UK, which i found sometimes lonely coz I know little people doing UX here, only some of them are UXD. and my current company is not a tech company, so quite a small UXR team, basically just me and my manager. I have been in self doubt for a while whether UXR is for me, should i continue to do this or should i try for UXD etc... and your videos are just so helpful!! 相见恨晚!!I found your profile in UX coffee mentor and it somehow directs me here. The candley link is expired, just wonder do you still do mentoring now? how do i book your next available slot if possible?
While I love and agree with your content, Google gave me the feedback after the interview, that the methods that I was exposed to was traditional and conventional.
I'm a designer, so watching this video and hearing about the skill and dedication involved makes me sweat. Trying new research methods can be scary to me. But as I work for smaller companies with no research team, there's no choice but to get stuck in and screw up. The alternative is to not talk to users. lol. Got any advice for designers that need to crossover from time to time?
Don’t sweat! Dedication comes from doing it repeatedly as well (you learn from your mistakes every time you do it ). The first good step is always to start talking to users! If you are a designer also performing research, usability interview + IDIs should be adequate to help you get started with talking to them.
Hi Aona, could you share your experience/tips on conducting IDIs for the first time. I have done it couple of times now but still feel nervous. Also I keep looking at the script so as to not miss any questions and I tend to miss some valuable information (which is not related to the current study but might shape future experiences).
Thanks for that question! Yes I plan to address those in my future videos (i.e. my tips of using certain methods) :) Stay tuned! (Also it's totally fine to refer to your notes/script, and letting your participants know you are checking your notes to make sure you cover all the questions you plan to ask them :)
It was a great video , but personally I feel that these methods are known to everyone who starts ux professions but it is not easy to become expert in mentioned methods, could you plz share some resources where I can get help to improve skills for using these methods.?
There are a ton of resources out there on each of these methods and they are a simple google search away :) my videos are not meant to educate on each method in depth so more learnings/readings are definitely needed. Maybe in the future I could do some methods deep dive - 2022 maybe?
