That 10-20 DX lens, as a student that likes photography as a hobby, I'm super excited about the lens. I know it won't be the best, but there were no wide angle lens that would fit in my budget until now, and I often find myself wanting something wider than that darned 18 mm.

I would stay away from Sigma and Tamron ultra-wide options as they are terribly soft. For DX the only 3rd party ultra-wide worth looking at is the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 that is super sharp but it is a little more expensive.

tokina 11-20 2.8 actually is a bit sharper and has a bigger zoom range. but it's more expensive, heavier and doesn't use 77mm filters anymore. (I think it used 82 or something like that)

Just got my 10-20 VR DX from Amazon. Nice! It's compact size is a perfect fit for my D5500. I had the other super wide DX zoom -- the one that costs a fortune and doesn't have VR or AF-P -- and I rarely used it. This new 10-20 is going to be a much more useful lens for me.

The problem is that you'll need to keep an ND filter on it all the time or have the aperture way smaller than 1.4 to do video, 1.4 during the day, even at 100 iso, would need like 4000-8000th shutter speed to be exposed correctly. You're shooting for 50-60 shutter speed so for vlogging, it's way more lens than whats needed. Good quality-absolutely, but about $1500 more glass than whats needed

I am glad I went and got the Tokina 11-20 f2.8. I am a little disappointed that Nikon did not make that 10-20 faster. I wanted them to just update their already existing 10-24 lens and make it a straight 2.8 instead of the variable aperture 3.5-4.5. I'll be curious to see the DXOMark scores of this lens.

Hi Jared, I to like the sound of the 8-15mm lens, I would agree with you in that this is an special lens enabling so interesting effects. As far as the 28mm f1.4 I just think that they are finish off the range of f1.4 lenses to ensure that pro have the ability to use f1.4 across the range. The one lens that I am hopping to bye with in two mount is the 19mm pce with is another lens that you do not use every day. Love the video's and look forward to the next. So thank to you and your team. (Not Canadian)

Most serious shooters, pro or otherwise, understand that 24mm is not 28mm. It's not the difference of a few steps. As soon as people start with comments like that we know we're not dealing with a person who understands the differences of FOV, DOF, 1.4 vs. 1.8, etc. Though sometimes subtle, those differences add up. I'd MUCH rather have the 28mm 1.4 than a 24 or 35, but having all 3 gives far more artistic latitude. If you can't afford it, that's YOUR problem. Nikon will sell a LOT of the 28mm lenses if it tests well.

I have a question about Nikon DX lenses. I know that it's not correlated to the video but thought I'd have posted it in latest one to get a response. If I have a DX lense mounted on a DX camera or sensor, do I still have to multiply the range by 1.5 or is the range written on the DX lense already real?

you need to mulitply ... and also multiply the aperture (not for light amount, but for knowing how the depth of field will look like) Photos with the the DX 10-20 F4.5 -> 5.6 will look like a 15-30 F7.3 -> F9.5 on a FX Camera

I wouldn't necessarily worry about the 4.5-5.6 on the 10-20mm. I'm thinking of getting one for landscapes and occasional architecture. You'll be using f11 and a tripod for landscapes generally speaking so an f 2.8 wouldn't make sense in this instance. Obviously if you've got other uses in mind for an ultra wide then the f stop may be an issue.

I shoot full-frame.... and if the 28mm f/1.4 fits someone's needs on full-frame, fine. However, for me it's one of those Nowheresville lenses. The 35mm focal length is the widest normal lens I use for portraits, glamor groups shots... and for landscapes the 24mm focal length is a narrow as I go with wide-angle... and when I want tighter shots to isolated a portion of a scene... I have my 35, 50, 85, 105 or 135mm lenses... or my 24-70, 70-200 or 120 to 300 zooms. About 85 percent of my landscape work is done with a 24mm or 20mm lens. I also have a 12mm fish-eye that I use every now and then as a specialty lens. The 28mm is a fine lens for a walk-around lens for someone shoot DX.

@Chrismzeller
@Chrismzeller 7 лет назад
I think the concept of a 28mm is as an alternative way to create a set of primes. I'm personally working on an 85mm, 50mm, 35mm 24mm, 20mm set, but I could also see: 85,50,28,20 as a valid alternative. In this case the 28 can serve as a single substitute for 35 and 24.

@CHixon
@CHixon 7 лет назад
I suspect the 28mm f1.4 is not there to address a market void but is a marketing tool nonetheless and probably utilizes a collection of surplus elements, moving out surplus element inventory off factory shelves out to the retailer, probably a very good lens. It is possible that it is offered to be a replacement compromise for the two lenses on either side of it, the 24mm and 35mm, in order to ultimately discontinue them and streamline the product array in light of a shrinking market base. After all, most camera owners probably will have a crop frame sensor and full frame sensor camera (that offers crop frame options) that redefine focal length and generate overlap focal length. The other two products are there to challenge the cell phone camera.
@nerwin
@nerwin 7 лет назад
While the focal length differences between the 28mm and 24mm is marginal, the distortion differences between the 28mm and 24mm is quite noticeable, the 28mm has *far* less distortion therefor is better on faces, landscapes, architecture, etc. It's really for photographers who want that wide angle (but not ultra wide) feel but without the distortion. I personally owned the 28 1.8G and it seems to be correct, that lens had very little distortion but I just didn't find 28mm all that useful for what I shoot.

Juraj037 28mm for street photography priced at $2000 for a DX lens? You could get a Ricoh GR II ( yes its an APS-C P & S)for 1/4 of the price and you're getting a whole camera. Reason why I ditched all my Nikon gear and made a switch to Sony mirrorless, Panasonic and Ricoh which I love using for street photography. Nikon should start innovating, instead they rolled out these lenses. Be careful Nikon or else Sony or any other company will buy you out. A 100 years in the industry does not guarantee your survival.

Honestly Nikon has to stop with the VR craze. Most of it is justified esp on the longer focal range lenses but clearly Nikon could've made a faster 10-20mm like 3.5-4.5 easily if they didn't add VR. You really don't need VR on a ultra wide lens, period. Tamron 10-24mm is a much better option for only $200 more.

You still forgot about the 58 1.4 ;) I personally don't think I would need a 28/1.4, but I like the idea of having a variety of lenses for every user. Now you have the 1.4-line that offers a lot of lenses for those who want certain focal lengths with best quality and maximum aperture, you have the 1.8-line for those who are into high-aperture prime lenses for less money, and there are the 2.8-zooms for those who want zooms. And of course you got all the kit lenses ans so on for those whoe don't want to spend to much money. Not everybody needs every lens, but I think it is good that there is an option for everybody who might have certain needs. This is why I personally appreciate lenses like this. The only problem to me is that the price scale seems to get out of control...

What would be the biggest bang for your buck. ~thanks!
@projectgoatse
@projectgoatse 7 лет назад
Ueax I'm not Jared, but I just upgraded to the D7200 for the sole fact that it beats out the D610 and D750 full frame bodies in sharpness and detail thanks to the lack of the AA filter. I'd only go with a full frame if you really need the better low light performance. If you don't, then with a proper Sigma DC HSM lens, you can easily get performance that rivals full frame.

If the 28/1.4 is as sharp as the D810 requires, then it makes perfect sense, as their 24/1.4 and 35/1.4 are not sharp enough to take advantage of the 36 M Pixel sensor, even when stopped down. This is a nice all-around focal length for landscape, street, that is a good place to start updating their primes to ones with better than 12 to 20 M pixel resolution.

Probably one of the only really good reasons I can see them doing a fisheye now is that that they've been way behind in the 360° virtual tour photography scene. Canon, Sigma and Samyang have all had great lenses for this purpose and with the 2 after market providers, they've held the market on Nikon mount for that niche. It's pretty damn late to come to the party on this one especially when the really big push in spherical photography has gone towards one-shot alternatives (not that any of them are really high res performers to the same degree as dslr mounted lenses). If your reason to buy the 8-15 is for that kind of work AND you shoot Nikon, it may be of interest. Otherwise, it's just another demonstration that Nikon's innovation timelines are nowhere close to the competition. Nothing against them as a core product and company - but seriously - late to the game.

Another review where unless you have the multi zero bank account for all the high end gear you are not worthy of air time. Most people who use DX are I bet people who like the idea of more serious photography but gear prices make them gasp. They are in that hazy grey area between camera phone and serious gear acquirer. Why bother mention DX gear at all as the users are not real photographers I hear you say Mr Polin but sadly in the real world thousands of DX cameras are used by people like myself as an affordable option of decent photographs on a motorcycle Tour somewhere in the world or a memorable day out at a Motorcycle race meeting or many other times I have encountered a DX user. I also use FX cameras for some of my work but what I would never do is look down my nose at a product. I am sure a number of viewers to this video will have come looking for information on a new product. They left perhaps a little more clued up but am sure they won,t be back for fear of humiliation or ridicule just because they don,t have or can not afford the high end. In a world where everyone but everyone whips their phone out in a few seconds to capture an image don,t alienate the causal DSLR user who is willing to take a small step into the world of DSLR and when they come looking for a bit of info and guidance think about who the person watching might be.

Paul Wood Luckily I saw your comment. A newbie here thats looking for an honest review for the new 10-20mm. You're right, he made me feel bad for not being able to afford a full frame camera. 😅

I bet they couldn't do a F4 fisheye ecause they are using that ancient Mount. should of switched like Canon did back in 80s.

Why would one need a 28/1.4, that's an easy one, I've shot one exclusively for years: www.flickr.com/photos/f_lynx/tags/afnikkor2814d/ Would buy it just for the ability to grab the focusing ring at any time and manually tweak the focus. ...and comparing to the old 28/1.4D that I have it's a bargain ;)

$2000 for a 28???????? WHY?
@tolga1cool

Because wide aperture. Because build quality. Because picture quality. As a hobby photographer I wouldn't buy one either. But for weddings, street photography or astro landscapes where you would need that aperture? Sure why not?

the new Lenses Nikon is doing are not G but E, they are making everything electronic like canon mount. no more leverage, this also increase the price I guess. canon did the passage 20 years ago Nikon is doing now and I add, FINALLY

The 28mm f/1.4 will be a great lens for the people who want something wider then 35, but a bit further in then a 24. Comment if you're one of those people!

Hard to justify >$1900 for a lens UNLESS you are making a living out of your photography or if you have deep pockets. If I were making $2-3000 for a wedding shoot and were doing 1 such shotting per week then MAYBE I could justify the cost but otherwise the Nikon 10-20mm DX VR for a cropped sensor Nikon is really the better deal for those who do photography as a hobby.

seems that everyone is very keen on the 10-20mm. It has been designed with the lowest standards. I expected nikon to release a upgrade for the 10 year old 10-24mm. Specially now that tamron has beaten them in their own game with their 10-24 vr release. It seems that nikon is steering the dx line towards low-end amatures and beginners. I cant really remember when it was the last time that nikon released a DX lens for high-end dx users. So what is wrong with this lens. 72mm (filter issues), fully plastic, lowest level of weather sealing, no distance meter, no vr or focus switch. With that in mind i can only imagin what the lens performance are with respect to flare, contrast, distortion, colours etc. Probably this lens will only score on sharpness. Resell value will be 100 bucks. For 350 you can get a pre-owned tokina 11-16 and for 500 you can get a fantastic tamron 10-24mm. Put your money there people.

Zooms are like McDonalds, convenient and potentially satisfying when you need them, but always built with more compromises and sample variation - lens rentals has proved this. The are not the same as primes = fine dining.

16mm f/2.8 not sharp on new high mp cameras???? WTF???? r u serious??? The only reasonable explanation for that is that you have a lemon copy! This 1993 rectangular fisheye lens is no less than superb and needs no replacement!!!
